    Please don’t discard the homeless.
I was homeless for a year. I have never touched a hard drug, never been arrested, didn’t get myself fired from my job, and never hurt anyone. I just came from a broken home and had lots of unhealed trauma that I didn’t deal with. Then, the company I worked for went out of business, my dad committed suicide and my brother died of an OD. After that, my wife left me. My psyche couldn’t take it. I fractured in significant ways. This all culminated with me ending up in my car full time. It’s better than a tent, but it still had no heat and no AC. Winter Nights were literally below 20 degrees F and the summer nights were hot and humid. Sleeping in a hatchback also had its own challenges, and exacerbated my mental and physical health issues in several ways. I would have trouble sleeping, which exacerbated my mental health struggles significantly, and I woke each day with new aches and pains from the cramped sleeping space.
In winter, it would be so cold that frost would form on the inside of my windows. In summer I would toss and turn as sweat poured out of me. I didn’t have many friends anymore, and nobody to offer me shelter. I didn’t speak to my family, because of the abuse and neglect from them in my past, so everything I went through, I battled and faced alone.
Along the way, I would have other roadblocks pop up. Kidney stones. Have you ever passed a kidney stone in a public bathroom? The screams of pain you let out don’t go unnoticed.
I also found a lump on a testicle during this time. I had to go in multiple times for ultrasounds, the first round of which were inconclusive. I would have to go to the dr, scared and anxious about my future, get tested, told it was still inconclusive and that I would need t come back for more testing, and then I would have to take the fear and uncertainty of that and just go back to my car, to try and sleep as the snow fell down and the tears ran down my face, and the crushing weight of loneliness and fear sucked my will away. But although, I wanted to, I did not quit.
I eventually found my way out, but only because someone took a chance on me, and allowed me to rent a room despite me having a bad credit score and being fresh off the streets. Every single shelter or parking place for transients living in vehicles was full and had ridiculously long wait lists. And since I am a single male, women children and families took up all available spots, even if they were not first in line. So I could never get help with shelter.
I was denied food assistance because I was told by the first case worker that since I paid for my own phone and insurance, I was technically paying my own bills without a FT income, which classified me as “living above my means.” To get assistance, I was always told I worked too much, or too little. It’s amazing how hard it was to get help.
Emergency help was available if I felt completely suicidal or what have you, but I didn’t need those services. I just needed a regular therapist. But I couldn’t find one in my area that took new patients. Health care and especially mental health care in the US can be a challenge when you are poor and have disabilities. I didn’t mention I am also autistic and have severe OCD and ADHD.
Trying to solve my issues of finding work and saving money and staying warm and working on my mental and physical health at the same time was incredibly taxing and took a toll on my body. Ribs and vertebrae would pop out of place all the time. It seriously did a number on my back and shoulders, in addition to the mental toll it took.
But not once did I steal from anyone, blame anyone else for my life, hurt anyone, never did I leave trash or garbage lying around. I was homeless, but I refused to be careless of others and their property.
Good luck everyone. I hope we all make it.

Yeah, the idea that people in shitty situations are there because of poor choices has crippled our society from actually helping those people get out of their predicaments. No one wants to help someone if it is all their own fault for [insert whatever scapegoat behaviour best suits your biases]. Many folks in this comment section are even using it to justify the treatment of the homeless here. It's puritanical bullshit and it needs to end.

What small thing that I can give you (and that I can get on the spot, when I'm already in the city) that would actually help you? A man and woman with kids walked through the rain and wind in western Washington winter, Barnes and Noble parking lot, 8 pm…to ask me if I could help them out at all. Normally I would’ve given them $20 or more, or taken them into the Trader Joe’s. Ext to B&N and had them fill a bag. That’s just how I do. They seemed kind, clean..sober-just down on their luck too. But I seriously did not have a quarter to my name. I felt SO GUILTY and humbled to the core to have to tell them “I honestly wish I could, and I would. But I do not have a single thing to give you. I’m so sorry!! Then I sat in my truck for about 20 minutes bawling my eyes out. Getting watery eyed just remembering that feeling right now. We haven't got much, but what we can do, we will.
There is NO ONE on this Earth who has the right to stop ANY of us helping each other. The ones who try doing that... well, hope they enjoy hell when their time comes.

@@djgroopz4952 Socialist programs like Finland's Housing First initiative have come pretty close. It's really just a matter of resource allocation. But when you live in a country where those on top would rather have the resources go towards things endless drone strikes because they're more profitable, don't expect to see any progress made on homelessness. Same with food distribution. The US wastes close to 50% of all food produced because it's more profitable to just throw it away than to feed the hungry.

Volunteering is good but as with almost everything, once the government get involved so does greed and incentive to maintain instead of fix situations to avoid the risk of losing their jobs for being successful, I am in such an industry where by I assist people with disabilities to obtain work, my co-workers have KPI's and as a result feel forced to put people into jobs that don't fit them and the humanity is taken out of it entirely. Everyone I work with are good people, kind people, the job itself is not well structured at a governmental level. Mental health services require more funding.
