Toner for use in Brother HL-5140 series of cartridges
Better if you have compressed air
The super high yield cartridges are slightly larger than the standard or high yield cartridges
When you install a new toner cartridge the bias voltage is set to high voltage and the cartridge page count is reset to zero.
As the cartridge is used, the bias voltage is reduced gradually down.
This is because a new toner cartridge has the tendency to print light.
The density increases as the cartridge is used.
To keep the density level even throughout the life of the cartridge, the density bias voltage is reduced accordingly.
different yields means different decreases in density over time, so Brother uses different reset gears to tell the printer how fast to reduce the bias voltage.
Printing a test page:
1. Press any of the arrows, then "OK" or "Back".
2. Press “UP” or “DOWN” arrows until you see on the display "Machine Info"
3. Press "OK" or "GO"
4. Press arrows until you see "Demo Print" or "Test Page"
5. Press "OK" or "GO"

I love this video, have watched it a several times, both before and while refilling my Brother 5470DW printer's TN720 cartridge, which I've done twice now. I pause and rewind on my laptop if I am not sure of a step. The first time I did this I had an issue when replacing the rubber roller after cleaning it. When inserting into the left side hole, the bracket with the hole broke. I fixed that with two part epoxy glue, saving my cartridge. I strongly suggest being very careful when inserting the cleaned rubber roller back into the cartridge. You might even want to lubricate the steel shaft's left end so it inserts into the hole more easily. Otherwise, I had no problems. Next time I run out of toner, however, I think I'll buy new cartridges. Not the Brother OEM's, but one of the highly rated but cheaper ones, probably a pair, actually. It comes out about the same in cost as buying toner and it's almost no work.
This is the best video on this i have seen. Thank you for so much detail and explanations.
thank you
Thank you - perfect video. All issues solved.
Thank you very much, muy útil para tn 3380
This is a very through video, thnx!
at 0:56 the fill plug retainingplate is still there, but few second later not any more?!? On mine, the plug and plate looks 1 piece, which brakes when removing. It looks like a refill protection! No good plate anymore to install reset gear on to.
Compatible cartridges and original cartridges could be different. You could fix a broken plug using glue, it's not an important part, or refill the cartridge through the roller opening leaving the fill plug in place
Sorry for the constant questions...but is White Lithium Grease okay for the gears? I washed them 100% clean with soap and water so am making sure I don't degrade the gears without lube - I noticed there was a white sticky lube on them from the factory. I have googled the topic and it's all over the place. Some people say that petroleum (38% of what is present in White Lithium Grease) with eat up nylon gears while others say to use White Lithium Grease and that it is safe. Suggestions?
The white lithium could work but it's more for metal to metal gears. A normal grease lubricant will work
@@viandant5 Will the White Lithium eat up the gears or make them "softer". If the White Lithium will work I would rather use that since I already have it but if you think it is dangerous, I will go ahead and get some normal grease. Which grease do you normally use?
I use a normal low cost grease for mechanical parts. I think white lithium should work too, inside a printer there are not too much frictions
@@viandant5 Great. Thank you as always. I have learned so much valuable information from your videos and chatting with you. Thank you!!!
I have been using brother dcp 8110dn model printer, but now it started to print with very low quality since I changed the toner. What could be the cause?
was it a new cartridge? Or did you refill it? may be the reset gear was not in the proper position, or the toner roller has not been correctly cleaned

I lost the e-ring. Is it safe to use without the e-ring?
Can I use a regular metal washer in its place?
Yes, you could use a thin metal washer or probably even without e-ring
@@viandant5 Awesome! Thank you so much, especially for such a speedy response :D
Have a great day!
How many times can a standard cartridge (3000 page - tn 720) be cleaned/refilled before the developer roller wears out?
2-3 times
Thank you sir! Btw, I really appreciate your videos and am grateful that you post them for us to learn.
hi, thanks for the video, HOW MANY TIMES CAN IT BE DONE?
Probably 2-3 times
Great!, thanks for answering
at 4:12 it says standard catridge use 200gr toner, how much grams for high yield toner?
250 grams is ok
too much work. all u need to do is put a piece of tape over the hole on the side of the cartridge. i used a starburst wrapper and put a piece of tape over it. as long as its blocked, the sensor believes there is toner in the cartridge. if light shines through, however, then it knows there's no toner and will give u the warning message.
Well, that will extend the life or your cartridge, I did this myself. But it eventually runs out of toner and you have to either refill it or buy another. Refilling is way cheaper than buying a replacement.
Tape over the sensor will buy you some time. It did that for me but eventually the printer refused to print. I then used this super great video in replacing the toner in the cartridge.
