Everything the officer said about Vader was dead on... Vader was the one that got roasted, with the truth, not the other way around.
Vader is the OP fictional counterpart to a lot of real life people; who don't go so far only because they can't get away with it.
But you forget one important thing. Only the Emperor may roast Vader without any consequences.

You understand that vader was forced to give up command of his ship? And the command staff who were directing it allowed a rebel spy to control it without even saying a single thing. It's fair to assume that there is a traitor among them and therefore they all should die
The officers weren’t wrong when they said Vader was just as responsible for what happened as them, it also isn’t a coincidence that the guy who agreed with Vader happened to be insane and murder another officer then kill himself, it’s not like you can just magically know if someone is a traitor if they don’t show it even when you literally have magic evidently, Vader was just pissed off and wanted to see some officers die
The real traitors are the empire loyalists. The emperor would murder them all and live in solitude if he wasn't paranoid that someone would be more likely to find a way to kill him or unless he also enjoys tortuing and killing so much he keeps the empire going for that reason.

The narrator speculates that Vader was silent because he wanted to torture them with anticipation. I'm not so sure. I speculate that Vader was debating if it was worth keeping this officer alive. Vader loathed failure, yet was also impressed with courage in the face of fear. He was equally wary of people being overly ambitious. So it's quite possible that Vader was trying to figure out a way to let him live in order to benefit the Empire.
Ultimately, he still probably would have murdered him simply because he would have known too much about how the other officers died.

@@randomkitty2555 Vader becomes Vader just shortly after the Empire officially began and was a notable officer and war hero before (if anybody knew who he was before). There cannot be much more pure Empire seniority than he has. Many of them will have more military seniority, or administrative seniority, but it could not have been in the Empire.
So... Basically the first officer was really saying "It's unfair!!" To which the second officer interrupted in reply with "that's outrageous!" And Vader just stood there silently... with a trip down memory lane... While the ensign kept hearing an un-explainable "Hello there!" in her addled head.

This is why the Empire could not last killing of good officers for telling a truth you don't like to hear is a horrible waste of resources.
Thrawn would have handled the situation differently.
The rebel Alliance was lucky in a sense that they had to deal with an unhinged madman instead of a competent officer like Thrawn in the early stages of the war
@D'niro Gavin Thrawn proved a superior officer to Vader in every way. The only thing Vader had over Thrawn was being Force sensitive. Had Thrawn been Force sensitive Palpatine would have replace Vader long ago. Vader was a strong enforcer that's it who wasted lives needlessly in his temper tantrums.

Especially if you think that there are probably tens of people only on your ship (Or base) that could replace you at any moment witouth a problem. Literally the moment vader had a problem with you he could just kill you. If nobody from the ship someone from the hundreds of academies and other ships all over the galaxy will take your place in no time

Agreed promotion in the empire just makes you a liability and scapegoat if something goes wrong since you are in charge all the blame goes to you regardless if it was your fault
In my opinion, people ask and sign up to be put under Vader's command knowing full well what happens in those ships.

Can we appreciate Ensign Nanda's dedication to the mission? She handled it as best she could, and while it was extremely difficult and taxing on her, she carried it out successfully, and earned Vader's compliments.
A wholesome story, in a way. Loyal, polite, professional. A good role model for all Imperial women, no matter how menial their jobs throughout our Empire.

True I can see your point, understand it and agree with it. The reason he was redeemed was because he brought balance to the force. Given in this case we look at the force swinging like a pendulum that has been pulled to one side too far and left to swing from extremes. When you look at it from the macro and micro level it starts to make sense. The question does then beg with Anakin Skywalker being redeemed, what did his lightside ghost do after to help atone for his darkside ways?

Well..they're not wrong. It _wasn't_ their fault that the Emperor put a traitor in command of the ship. What were they supposed to do, ignore the legal orders of their Emperor-given commander? Were they supposed to protest against their superior _then,_ but not _now?_ Vader is such a hypocrite here.
I'd like to say that the command staff were technically proven to have been incompetent as they had to have Darth Vader get evidence of a traitor instead of one of the others going to him with it.

Genuinely surprised that Vader was even allowed to be in a command position with how many officers he killed or had killed because he couldn't keep his temper in check.

At one point The Emperor pulled Vader aside and said hey, quit killing officers and Vader said "No". So the Emperor told him, "Fine, but you cant touch Tarkin, I need him".
