    The duo dissect the final set in Rath cycle, with their thoughts on the Oaths, a deep dive on the sets' pre-constructed decks, and why Exodus contains one of the worst designs of all time.

    I really enjoy that Patrick is able to articulate very well why broken cards are badly designed beyond just being bad for the game. Flowstone Flood being a standout bad design because it creates UNFUN games from the very core of its design makes perfect sense, and conversely it's very fair to say that Survival of the Fittest is a great DESIGN even though it's too powerful, because it is a very fun idea and execution with just too few things to keep it in check. Top tier analysis.

    • @Phyrre56
      @Phyrre56 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Also that Survival is good because it asks you to brew up a deck that can break it while Oath of Druids is bad because it punishes your opponent for playing the game normally. That's the #1 thing I've learned from Patrick in this series -- early MTG was loaded with cards that punished people for playing the game and they didn't figure out to stop doing that for many years.

  • @targetplayer
    @targetplayer หลายเดือนก่อน +34

    Feels like the negative of Flowstone Flood influenced Exodus' rating more than the positive of rarity symbol colors' debut. That was a HUGE quality-of-life upgrade that helped prevent fleecing of newbies trading their dual lands for Craw Wurms.

    • @Phyrre56
      @Phyrre56 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      How much of a boost can you give the set for rarity symbols? It's not like those symbols had anything to do with the plot or design of Exodus. It's a really good idea that just happened to debut with Exodus. The ratings are based more on the design and development of what the cards do.

  • @christopherlundgren1700

    Another strike against Workhorse is that the art depicts the titular Workhorse with a glowing gem inside it for each color of mana, but the card only allows you to generate colorless mana. It makes me wonder if there was an earlier design where you could remove the counters to make any color of mana, but they changed it at the last minute. Or if this card was just to use up some leftover art from another card that got killed completely and "artifact creature that makes mana somehow" was close enough to what was being shown.

    • @tubbstopher
      @tubbstopher 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wouldn't be surprised if it was something silly originally like, "Add one mana from the following colours: white, blue, red, or green. You may not choose the same colour more than once per game."

    Its interesting that what we now call "the retro frame" is introduced in Exodus in summer of 1998 and was only the standard until Scourge in spring of 2003. The thing that many players consider to be the look of a "real" magic card was only a thing for a relatively brief period in the games early history.

    • @JD-gk7eh
      @JD-gk7eh หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      The Exodus frame is only a minor update to the Mirage frame, just adding the rarity symbols and centered bottom. That doesn't constitute a frame change in most people's eyes because nothing essential to game information moved nor did anything change size. Further, the Mirage frame is pretty close to the Beta frame in that it has the same border and box widths. Font sizes vary widly on the Beta frame and they finally quit doing that with Mirage, which had a much smaller range of font sizes, something they've continued to this day. From Arabian Nights on, a frame with a thinner border is used (it matches the border used on the current frame) and the color saturation varies over time until it's finally unified in Mirage. Scryfall does mark 1993 and 1997 frames as different (even though the 1997 frame came out in 1996 with Mirage....) and you can search on that, but I don't think most players consider the two entirely new frames.
      So I'd argue that the "retro frame" as we call it today is really the Mirage frame, but I think most players think of pre-Mirage frames as retro as well since the differences between them are pretty small and the frame is 90% the same from Beta until Scourge.

    • @Cthuski
      @Cthuski หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JD-gk7eh I'm using the standards introduced in Exodus to define the "retro" card frame because it's the way that wotc prints cards now when they print "retro" framed cards. It's not that it was a huge shift in the way the frame looked prior but it is what many in the community (myself included, really) seem to think is the ideal form of a magic card and that standard really only existed for 5 years.

    • @denissinner4625
      @denissinner4625 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Cthuski For most people its the same frame. Like, if you ask magic players, 90% of them will not even know the frame changed really except for the rarity symbol.

    • @Cthuski
      @Cthuski 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @denissinner4625 all I'm saying is when they print retro framed cards, the look that they are going for was the standard only between 98 and 03. It would be noticeable if they printed a new card into a frame that was made to look like it was from 94

    Something interesting about Tempest block to me is that even though the blocks main mechanics fell flat, there are so many iconic individual designs that just have a Tempest-block vibe to me. I didn't start playing until 2015 and I can still look at a card like Survival of the Fittest, Oath of Druids, or Pandemonium and say "that's a Tempest block card", in a way I can't with a lot of the other older blocks. Maybe it's because its one of the few pre-Modern blocks that took place off Dominaria and that just gives everything a certain aesthetic, I'm not entirely sure to be honest.

    Years ago, I went to my LGS Commander night and some guy killed me right out of the pod with Hatred on turn 4 or 5. I didn't go to Commander night much after that, but for other reasons, mostly yoga on the same night and I was more interested in limited on FNM. Then the pandemic happened and I stopped going to LGSes altogether. A few months ago I'm prepping for a CEDH tournament and one of my friends says there's a CEDH table at Commander night, let's go there. So I do, sit down and one of the player goes, "I don't know if you remember, but years ago, I killed you with Hatred" and I was like "I do remember that, it was awesome!" Oath of Lieges is a pretty fun commander card! It really helps move the game forward by letting everyone catch up on mana and make sure no one gets too far out front with that. My complaint with Exodus isn't that they ran out of ideas, but rather that it seems they went into the set without a clear design goal in mind. The main idea seemed to be "it's the third set in the block" but they made no attempt to innovate on any of the existing designs, mechanics, or themes. They just set out to make more cards. They did a good job of translating the story to the CARDS, but there doesn't seem to have been any focus put on asking how that story translates to a SET. There's just no cohesive vision.

    I don't understand how you guys come to the conclusions about Gerard that you do, it's really baffling how no matter what he does you guys try to twist it into him being a monster.

      It's a combination of "applying modern behavioral standards to fictional tropes makes you look cleverer than the author" and "straight white men are always safe targets". They would never put such a hostile interpretation on every move if Jolrael were the main character and taking the same actions.

      @@karlk5801 Maybe, but it seems like there's a genuine hatred there and it feels very bigoted from Patrick's side of things. I was never really a fan of Gerard as a character, mostly because I thought he was less interesting than Urza and others, but I really can't understand how someone listens to the story of Gerard making a difficult decisions of leaving a friend behind to assure the survival of the world and twists it into Gerard being privileged and egotistical to the point of malice. I don't think I'll be coming back to this podcast, I liked the trivia and history, but the constant seething by Patrick makes it unwatchable.
