Street light thefts near Oakland's Lake Merritt have residents concerned

- Residents who live near Lake Merritt in Oakland are concerned about their safety after thieves have stolen or damaged at least 10 light poles, some of which have dated back for more than a century. Katie Nielsen reports.

I work in the light pole industry, they are not green because they are solid copper with 100 year old patina. It's green paint and the bases and poles are probably steel. Copper patina is MUCH lighter.

Oakland (and SF residents) should just face facts. Since they support progressive policies like criminal justice reform, why not just come up with a tax on all residents and use that to give all thieves a living allowance? It'll be much easier for the thieves to just collect a check than to rip heavy stuff or smash car windows and try to fence stolen goods.
Check the people at 12 st and 16, just drove by and they were peeling a lot of electrical wire.

They're not stealing the cast iron light poles. The poles were damaged by a storm or are rotting. They are stealing the copper wires that feed the poles. The poles were never designed to have the string of lights hanging from them. Then when a tree branch falls on the wires it puts a huge strain on the poles.

When will the government have a strategy punish thieves that won't create burdens on taxpayers?
This is happening in Pasadena too - historic lamposts that are about 100 years old being stolen by trashy people. The people who buy these stolen pieces are part of the problem.

I like how the news don't show the homeless tent part of the lake ahhaha nice job making it look better on news but in real life and I go there like 3 times a week to walk it's homeless tents and homeless people sleeping in almost every corner of the lake and the grass has dookie all.over it and the benches are sticky and nasty and they have bird and human dookie everywhere you walk

Graduated from high school in Oakland in 1974. Oakland was nothing like it is now. Just Plain horrible. Would like to thank these progressive politicians. Our governor and Sanctuary city and state status. Cannot open your borders to poor people from every darn country.

I Lived right on Lake Merritt on Jackson St 1980-86 and was working paying rent $310 a month, and on a Boxing Team, won Northern California Gold Gloves in 82-83, use to jump rope and shadow box there and Alameda college on Sundays, i could burn that Lakes 3 mile roadwork up in 16 minutes and i would go around twice, 6 miles for my boxing Roadwork, you know im a real Boxer when i say Roadwork instead of jogging.

They are already stealing the wiring for traffic lights...at one intersection they stole the wiring for the traffic lights, then the city put out stop signs at the intersection and they stole those too.
What is wrong in our world right now? I remember when i was growing up people respected each other and feared the police. Now all this brazen crime in broad daylight is just crazy to me. I came from a better and much smarter generation!!!!!!!!

@@reginaldbrown8012 Both were part of the original installation in 1925 but the bulbs on the catenary lighting would have been replaced multiple times since then. I can see recently they were re-lamped in 2006 and again in 2016 with LED bulbs.
