Good for the state to finally start holding land owners accountable for drawing down too much water.
Why doesn't the state be held accountable for letting water go into the ocean?
95% of their freshwater goes straight into the ocean thanks to government policies and it’s the landowners’ fault?
@@ebl89 The state has to balance things. For example, that water going into the ocean allows salmon to migrate. There has to be some water for nature. It is not waste for rivers to actually have some flow. We take a lot of the water.
You can thank large ag for the over draw from aquifers. Home owners (who have wells) are not the cause. Sorry to say, but almond growers... is one of the WORST crops to grow out here, the water consumption required is so much higher than other crops. Fresno county works year round to try to help re-vitalize the ground water, but the valley is larger than just Fresno country. Central Valley has been dealing with subsidence for YEARS. This is not a new issue. Parts of the CV have dropped over 25 ft.
@@timmannchicken Yeah, it is odd to see so many almond trees growing in arid areas of CA where cactus are not even found. An online source I read says 2,000 gallons to produce one pound of almonds which is crazy. That said, it takes 1,847 gallons of water for a pound of beef so those two things are the lowest hanging items for farming reform in CA. Folks on the right will call it “the nanny state” to go after them or anti farming but to me it is just about being efficient and water wise.
And let's also not forget that once the earth sinks and the sub surface compresses it will never hold groundwater in the manner in which it used to because you cannot uncompress the sub surface. It is a massive double whammy.
Did you read that 1,000s of small town water systems are being fined by EPA for 15 parts per trillion of PFAs... _but the bottled water suppliers are exempt._ It's blatant land and water theft, which is also how Los Angeles and Las Vegas were founded, by theft. _We are all Palestinians now._
This is a deeply disturbing development. It's also a phenomenal piece of news journalism. Outstanding piece of work.
It will be interesting to see if any Fresno or Bakersfield TV stations will show this. Over here farmers have LOTS of political clout.
The state needs to be better. It could grant the City of Visalia millions to build its Eastside Regional Park with its attached water recharge project, saving them tens of millions in subsidence costs. The state also needs to cut and fund suitable projects. Also, no well in Tulare county should be deeper than 150 feet.
My old USGS employee Geology teacher said over drilling for water causes a CONE OF SUBSIDENCE.
I've never heard that term before. In school we always called it a cone of depression. Same thing though. Although in this case this is one hell of a cone of subsidence! It is freaking massive. And, once the sub surface compresses, that's it, it will not accept the same amount of groundwater percolation ever again. You can't uncompress it!
@@user-ke9yk5qp3u Only nature/the earth can and people living there will not like the great upheaval that would be needed. It would prolly cause the ocean to fill the valley.
So we’re not gonna talk about using less water across the board and just re-do the system that has failed multiple times before… sounds like a brilliant & cost efficient solution
Way more complex than that. That is a layperson's over simplification.
Hey man. Where is the logic? This is about greed and money there’s plenty of water.
They have no choice but to rebuild the canal again and again because the sinking ground keeps reducing its carrying capacity. Some farmers rely on that canal water, and those who don't, make the problem worse with their groundwater pumping.
Major sustainability issues given the massive scale of agriculture in central valley. Unless something changes this will continue to get worse.
Why don't they just raise the banks of the old canal? The water would fill the deeper canal.
Do you understand what you need is wet land in central valley California Tulare lake will work better
This is not a challenge. This is straight up greed. Central Valley farmers have been expanding acreage year after year. Stop trying to frame. This is some kind of global environmental issue. It’s a greed issue. It’s California Central, farmers, Stuart Resnick, Paramount Farms. Wake up, start reporting the news and quit pandering to the problem.
It has absolutely nothing to do with California krazies shutting off the water to farmers so they have to drill for it? Nah.
I don't disagree, but also wanted to mention is is not just the famers, but SoCal water management board who have a HUGE impact on water consumption, even in northern and central CA.
Thank you. Yes I don’t think most people understand how complicated the water resources are in California. There’s all these little regional thief them that control their water. Some of them are downright corrupt. No accountability no transparency. It’s too bad complicated topics typically lose their audience we need water for Salmon. Dammit.
@@timmannchicken Do not forget the huge waste of water to get green lawns in a desert just for show.
@@lepotdefleur9906 for the volume of water here, watering all the lawns in SoCal is just a fraction of the usage. It's definitely still wasteful, but it's nowhere near the primary cause.
WTF did they expect would happen? Definition of insanity.
Greed.
Are you talking about the farmers or the canal builders?
@@titaniummechanism3214 It's not a matter of or. And, plus anyone else involved.
So please confirm the final link here. Basically is what you’re saying is if the ground sinks that the canal doesn’t work because water needs to go uphill to another location. Is that what’s going on. They don’t really say how the sinking really causes it to not work
yup that's pretty much it! the canal needs to keep a consistent down slope along its run to work fully, and if you sink it in the middle, the water pools up at the low point, then can't get back up to where it's supposed to be.
Good story, well done
This is great news!
Finest American Engineering.
More like greedy as farmers.
Building right next to sinking land just sounds like trouble
The entire farmland in that area is sinking.
What would Huell Howser think about this?
Your hero is long dead (RIP). You’ll have to have your own thoughts. What do you think?
Need more beavers
Say it ain't so....a canal that's sinking so they build another one right beside it. So who was the expert that said it would work.
Its almost as if this region is not suitable for large scale farming. Insanity.
Wow I have no idea what the problem is cause I didn’t hear it plainly put.
greed in that I demand "mine"
Reservoirs are the best for Groundwater Recharge.
Doesn't the state of California allow a lot of water to flow into the ocean un used? It sounds like they should start there
The entire valley needs to live in minor flood conditions for years to replenish the land because this problem aint going away.
they should have just used pipes. or they should pump water back into the ground
Ask Adam S. what he’d do?!?!😂
Ask the governor what to do
Sorta like rebuilding some of the areas in new orleans after katrina that are below sea level and people don't want to move back to.
How about growth management???? No more development!!!
Too many humans.
It's a problem of greed! Stomp out the small private farms so corporations can monopolize the food supply
Farmers grow our food.
They have to have water.
Farmers are pumping out of the ground because the state will not pump water from the delta.
The delta can't supply this much water, are you joking
This is the tragedy of the Commons where greedy farmers profit and expect the public to pay for the consequences of their greed. If they were charged the full cost of the water they are pumping they would think twice about it.
Do you want to eat?
Imagine using drip irrigation to cut the water use! Then you wouldn’t need to pump ground water as this canal would be enough to meet the reduced demand all while farm outputs say the same. But as usual that makes to much sense so we can’t do it.
grow some different crop, maybe wheat or something drought resistant, Too much water Usage is causing
an runaway affect.
More people is always the answer
We need to go back to more localized food and get rid of this fake economy of scale.
The dollar costs go down with for products when you grow a lot, but it’s clearly going to ruin your ability to grow their in the future.
I buy local food from New Mexico though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The effort to import gravity fed ocean water into Laguna Salada in Mexico, Salton Sea in California should also include Death Valley about 282 feet below sea level to increase monsonal moisture through evaporation for Colorado Basin. The new technology of cavitation can produce highly competitive hydrogen fueled electricity and the exhaust is free desalinated ocean water should be our focus asap. The valuable waste brine is mineral rich and has numerous commercial applications to incentivize economic prosperity. I like the idea of making water proof building materials with waste salt by Israel University is fantastic for low cost housing. Imagine giant inland sea's for fish farming, algae, carbon sequestration, recreation, monsoonal rainfall and selling the lowest cost zero pollution fuel source making ocean water more valuable than oil thanks to Eirex Tech in Canada a five year old company.
How about a pipe?
Why can't they install pumps to keep the water flowing?
They can use pipes and pumps to keep the water flowing, but it will be prohibitively expensive.
Why install pumps instead of facing the root of the problem? Farmers have been drawing too much water for decades. We need to increase groundwater recharge and disincentivize wasteful water practices.
That would be ridiculously expensive and consume a massive amount of electricity.
Bacon install pumps, but they have to pub water into the ground. They do this in Watsonville. Greedy farmers kept pumping groundwater and it caused salt water intrusion now if you drive along the coast, you’ll see purple pipe. This pipe is pumping water back into the groundwater in order to keep salt wateraway from the groundwater table. This is not rocket science. It’s been going on forever and they’ve been warning these fools about this forever. Now they want federal help federal money. These people talk about welfare state. These people are worse than.
A touchy subject. Sounds like explaining sex to your kid. Grow up.
What a bunch of fools.
says the guy supporting Ukraine .. smh
its are right for water if Framers Leave your Taxes go up an FOOD PRICES WILL GO EVEN HIGHER
What?
Brilliant, don’t solve the problem just build something new that doesn’t work!
Pronounced TulAre
Wait till the bog one. Comes
We've already had the "big one" several times. It's fine. We know how to handle them.
Need to make it shallower and wider to spread the load , so designers fault
the ground isn't sinking from the weight of the canal, lol
Maybe start rain water harvesting....
Just keep doing what you're doing👍 ...eventually the federal govt will simply get american taxpayers to bail you out
This is cheap compared to the roadbed of your new California High Speed Rail. To go 250 MPH the track and overhead wires need to be within an inch, but the roadbed is sinking. That project is at $35 Billion and rising, and they haven't had to rebuild this part yet.
What is going on with her outfit? Did she just get finished jogging I didn't have time to change?
The entire state is sinking
Did the tax payers pay for this?
Here's what we can do...Instead of that massive reservoir being built north of Sacramento, how about it be built from Stockton to Bakersfield, and everything in between can be under 100+ feet of water. Eventually the groundwater will be replenished and as the weight of the water on the land grows less and less, the ground being spongy will bounce back. It will take 200+ years but this is the price we have to pay for 80 years of just okay produce in California.
whey dont they use pipes
Lol bro are you kidding me you answr d your own question
Pipes would make it way too expensive.
Politics and democratic voting to support Bill and bond may fall short and cause only more lost time and money and jobs and more government corruption in a already one or two spot holder of the worst government in the USA.
Lol. Voting republican is NOT an answee.
Just drilled 1730 feet and plenty of water under the valley.
"The only option was a new canal" Have you never heard of a pipe?
Poor management and greed
i would build another one
THE EARTH IS SHRINKING FROM ALL THE PUMPING OF OIL, GAS, AND WATER!!!
why do people keep putting farms in areas without enough rain to supply it. this is just foolish. if you rely on water for your business. move it somewhere with more water or don't put it there in the first place. ill never understand why people would even want to live in areas with not enough water to begin with. or like las vegas, in a DESERT of coarse there is a fricken water SHORTAGE. its just so stupid. XD
Are you new to this country? Do you need a history lesson? You really think these are new farms? Pull your head out of your rear end. Very few places in the world have the perfect conditions for agriculture with out human modification.
Gavin's Garden's
Gavin is NOT a friend of farmers. No farmers have voted for Gavin.
It's the most conservative part of the entire state. This is their policies, not his.
So, what's your proposal? Got any suggestions? Or were you just here to complain?
What a grumpy ole man go back to bed franklin
Too many citrus trees there state dosent that much
Newsom doesn't care.
The farms don't care . Over pumping of ground water, no respect for the environment . They want the public to bail them out . Republican farmers 😂
Keep watching Fox News Mr. cuckoo bird! Obviously you have nothing to contribute here.
He's adopting regulations to stop greedy farmers. He's doing more than they are
It’s the farmers that don’t care, genius.
What would you suggest he do? Tell all the farmers to stop farming?
Time for the world to smarten up and plae solar panels on every canal and increase desalination.
Another incompetent project brought to you by gavin newsom
