DC-9's actually didn't have or need one, because they had cable operated controls connected to control tabs so hydraulics weren't necessary to control the aircraft. The hydraulics on the 9's only give power to the elevators in the event of a stall. They are driven down to get the nose down when there's not enough airflow to move the elevator with the tab. the DC-9 always felt nice and smooth but also very sturdy, you always felt like you could put the airplane wherever you wanted, certainly one of the sweetest flying airplanes I've had the opportunity of flying. Ram Air Turbines or Air Driven Generators (ADG) as they were known Douglas Jets only came in on larger aircraft like the DC-10 because they have hydraulically operated control surfaces not the manual tabs like the DC-8 and DC-9 family had.
Actually, essential instruments are on battery power if the engine generators stop. Per regulations, the equipment on this battery bus needs to stay on for 30 minutes.
You have to realize tho this crash occurred in 1977, regulations were far fewer than today, most like that werent implemented until the late 80's and early 90's.
I have a lingering question when i look @ aircraft disasters caused by nasty weather; is it really worth the risk,is it totally impossible to announce a delay, disembark the passengers wait out the storm in the airport lounge, give the passengers something to eat and drink to comfort them during their wait , and then continue the flight when the danger has passed!?? Or is the possibility of revenue loss a far greater consideration for the airlines bean counters?
