BYU beat Utah pretty good at their last meeting. Would Utah have scored if you take away the 25 yard net gain from the bad face mask call? Did Utah stop that last drive? Did Utah score a single point in the entire second half?

The refs didn't give them field possession to kick the field goal, Utah still let them march down the field and kick the field goal. The better team won.
However, the bad call of the game was in the first half when BYU was called for "facemask" on what video review clearly shows was not.

@@phillipcook3430 Could care less what your idol Joel thinks, he is not a referee and not an expert on the rules. He is a biased pundit and much of the time he just goes against the grain to get attention. He is not a good source for unbiased application of the rules. The commentators calling the game reviewed it live on air and even said it was a good call.
However, on the other hand, every professional referee analyst across the country says it was the correct call even at that time of the game. I have yet to hear of one disagreeing.
Sorry, you're so hurt that the ute player got caught cheating at the end of the game.
Further, the refs didn't put BYU in field goal range; BYU had to go another 55 yards down the field to kick that ball. Utah's defense should have stopped them.
The bad calls of the game happened in the second quarter, and they helped Utah. That also happens to be the only quarter the Utes scored points. BYU held them scoreless in the other three quarters.
Hopefully, Utah will rebound this week and beat Colorado. Take care.

BYU was very lucky to win. But it had nothing to do with the refs. The reason that they were lucky is that they played poorly on offense and defense but their special teams came through in a big way. They should've been able to handle the Utes rather easily. But their poor performance made the game closer than it ever had the business of being.

Look, so many arm chair quarterbacks and recliner refs focus on calls made in the final moments of a game; blaming these calls for outcomes. However, the logical and statistical truth is the very first call made in any game can have the same effect. As an example, go analyze the clearly bad face mask call against BYU. That call clearly had an effect on the game’s outcome.

The U of who is the last program that should talk about referees putting their thumb on the scale. Especially coming from the pac 12. They had plenty of games given to them by highly questionable calls, including letting an officiating team that was supposed to be suspended for their bad calls the week before come to the Y and hand Utah an unearned win. Or when the PAC12 ruled that a BYU player who had both of his knees on the ground somehow fumbled the ball in a late hit.
Utah also got a share of questionable calls like the face mask call that turned a 10 yard sack into a 15 yard first down on a scoring drive. Unless college football changed the rules to include jerseys as part of the face mask the BYU players hands were no where near to grabbing the face mask.
In any case all Utah’s AD accomplished is proving Max Hall right.

There’s a lot of liberty in that first 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. The ref didn’t throw the flag until the second time the cornerback made contact with the receiver, when he grabbed and pulled down on his jersey, causing the receiver’s shoulder to drop down. Also, if you look at the qb’s eyes on this play, he’s looking to his left where the receiver is. He could have made a quick throw to him but didn’t want to because he was being held. If the qb was looking to the other receivers on the right, the ref wouldn’t have thrown the flag.

Utah has had many great wins over the last few years under Whittingham but it has very much gone to their collective heads. They have become very pompus and just expect that they are going to beat everyone and that the other teams should live in fear of their defense. If the refs were calling pass interference on similar plays throughout the game, then one can say "you were warned" that close touching might well be called PI. If, however if the refs were not calling pass interference on similar plays throughout the game, then one can reasonably say that something isn't right or fair. Would be good to know from you all that watched the entire game to get a feel for the legitimacy of the call at that time in the game.

Very lucky. ? They have 1 timeout with a minute and 30 seconds. They are on the 7 yard line. After a busted play with a safety happens. They get a time out? Why was the play not stopped.. and why would the coach use his time out if he didn't already see what was happening in the play.. but ok. Maybe he did call it before.. wow that's lucky. But then on the next play they get a holding call? Did you see how far the ref was from the play that made that call.? Maybe it was the right call. But he wouldn't have been able to tell. Wow. How much luck can you get?. Then they rule a pass that they couldn't actually see him catch it.. A catch. They refs are not supposed to call it a catch unless they see it caught.. sometimes it's bobbled or they couldn't tell they were out of bounce. But they didn't see him catch it. You couldn't even see or tell for sure on the replay if it was. But they already ruled it a catch. So the call on the field stood. Wow. Even more luck. It's low for even one of these things to happen at the end of a game.. but all three. Yet BYU fans think it's absurd that Utah fans think the refs were biased. 🙄
