    We've been asked just how much weight can a squat rack's safety straps hold. Well, we tested it by dropping 814 LB from above shoulder height. I think we can now all squat confidently.

    I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B

    800lb with falling velocity of ~15 mph would be very close to 3.5 tons of force at peak on the straps. Also consider that this is shearing force on a very small strip, I’d feel very safe under these straps.

    • @paomndz8336
      @paomndz8336 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Warp its not shearing force tho.

    • @TheSarah921

      How did you calculate the 3.5 tons? See also physics.stackexchange.com/questions/527069/calculate-force-exerced-to-stop-a-falling-barbell-by-straps

    • @TheSarah921
      @TheSarah921 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Calfman If you read my question on stackexchange carefully, you will notice that I didn't claim that the straps stretch by 23,4 cm, but that the center of gravity goes 23,4 cm lower than if the bar would just rest on the straps. This is mainly from the deformation of the bar itself and only secondary because the straps stretches a little bit. Nevertheless the whole system can be considered in first approximation as a spring like system obeying hooks law.

    • @TheSarah921
      @TheSarah921 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Calfman Why is 1m "height force" approx 2,5 times the weight? And why should it in this case be 3,5 times the weight? I don't see how you get those numbers. Would be great if you could explain this more in detail.

    • @Exachad
      @Exachad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TheSarah921 In your post, it seems like you're trying to get the most accurate results, so I had a few thoughts. In your video analysis, you said you weren't able to figure out the slow motion FPS. Can't you look at the time it takes from start to finish for the barbell to hit the strap in both the regular speed and slow-mo speed? Slow-mo FPSes typically follow the formula 30*2^n where n is an integer. So you have 60 FPS, 120 FPS, 240 FPS, 480 FPS, and 960 FPS. If you get an FPS of approximately 957 by comparing the two, you can assume the camera is 960 FPS. Looking at the video, the motion in the slow-mo footage lasted for 28 frames while the video in the regular footage lasted for 14 frames, suggesting that the slow-mo footage was exactly 60 FPS, which isn't that slow-mo to be honest.
      Additionally, I can see you tried using Hooke's law to do the calculations in your first approach. I don't know if Hooke's law is very applicable since the bar was clearly bent beyond its elastic limit and has a permanent deformity as seen in the later parts of the video. Though the bar isn't super bent, it seems like the deformity is negligible, but it may not necessarily be. Anyway, this is as accurate as you're going to get without actually buying all of his equipment and measuring the peak force in person, LOL.

    Just want to point out that the outermost weights strike the ground on the initial impact. This diverts a ton of force energy to the ground and off of the straps. The steel bar provided the dynamic stretching to allow this. With all of the force removed by the ground strike there is considerably less force on the straps. If this were attempted with the straps a little higher the results could have been profoundly different. #physics

    • @Chrisisreal978
      @Chrisisreal978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@MeepMeep88 It's really hard to know the actual load in the straps. The flexibility of the bar, the spacing between the two vertical columns, the distribution of the plates on the barbell, and where it hits on the strap all have the potential to significantly influence the load seen in the straps. Assuming that's nylon webbing for the straps then you would also want to consider how much moisture is in the straps. Nylon is hygroscopic and its stiffness and strength change significantly with temperature and humidity. The way to measure the load would either be with a load cell inline with the straps and recording data at high speeds to find the peak or doing some simulation modeling with a computer.

    • @martiqmarty
      @martiqmarty 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is my estimate. Height from bar to straps: 1.3m. The bend in the bar on impact: 0.1m. So Average force = (380kg*9.81m/s2*1.3)/0.1= 48.5kN 48.5kN is equal to a force of a resting (48500/9.81=) 4943kg or almost 11,000lbs. Now be aware that this is a very rough estimate. The bent in the bar is very hard to see which has a great influence on the force. Also this is the average force on the straps, peak can be higher. To be honest it easily also could be 5000lbs

      Actually they are good at copying companies that make good stuff. Built at slave labor costs allows them to sell so cheaply. You can see on their belt squat how they do when they don't copy Rogue or Elite FTS or Sorinex. It was a poorly designed POS.

    One thing about straps.
    Any straps meant to handle weight especially shock loading.
    Also faded straps for outdoor setups exposed to weather.
    If the stitching/thread that holds it all together is getting frayed or cut then the system is compromised and could completely fail when shock force is applied

    Will Barbell damaged from dropping on canvas cable 3:46 ? Normally when they dump barbell on the floor, bumper plate will make contact and absorb the shock. If barbell shaft dropped directly on canvas. Will it break? EDIT: nvm lol I watch all the video. It bent. So it is better to drop it with bumper plate.

    The amount of weight required to bend is inversely proportional to the distance away from the fulcrum. The weight was close to the strap, so more weight is required. The bar rating is calculated based on hand position

    What's the point of using straps instead of bars? Do bars damage the barbell more, or is it a cost thing?

    • @eshteluvetuluetpineapples4104
      @eshteluvetuluetpineapples4104 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah bars do more damage. If you did this with bars instead of straps the barbell would be 100% unusable afterwards. Plus the bars bend over time and can harm the entire rack in some cases

  • @amfitness5598
    @amfitness5598 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought those for my T2 rack on sale for 65$ a pair. I looked for months for straps that would fit 2x2 rack with 1inch holes and the closest match I found was on the EliteFTS site over100$.
    I have never had to drop a barbell on them so far...but I did test them doing “rack pulls” off them with 495lbs for reps they held up fine zero issues.
    Overall good value for the money.

  • @TheDanson000
    @TheDanson000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    A single 2 inch strap has a WWL (working load limit) of 3,333lbs. That grade 7 bolt that connects to the strap has a WWL of 6,800 lbs at 3/8 and 5,700lbs at 5/16.
    The next weight drop should be something you could break the strap with to show you the resiliency of the equipment!

    After watching this video, is it safe to say that these Titan strap brackets would fit a Rogue Infinity R-3 rack? I went with the 30" depth option for my R-3 rack and for some reason Rogue only offers 24" straps with the Infinity line. Figured I'd go with the 36" Titan strap option for half Rogue's price as long as the brackets fit and if the straps are too long I can always get them custom made locally. Just need to know if Titan T-3 brackets would fit a Rogue R-3 rack.

  • @Jean-jr8ys

    There are handheld scanners that can tell you exactly what metal they are reading, they are quite expensive but I can grantee Rogue must use them for QA purposes when they receive a batch of steel, Titan maybe not.

    To be fair. I have rope in my shedd that are made for the crane and they are rated at like 2,5 metric tones. There are ropes that can hold 5 tones. So idk what people are thinking around here but a lot of things you hear about being used in industry and shit are really strong.

  • @silviom
    @silviom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The weights hit the floor! Unfortunately you didn't fully test the straps or bar because of this; some of the load (the falling bar) was absorbed by the ground and not the straps.

    • @ah7027
      @ah7027 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      they dont hit the floor. You can see it in the replays is stops a few inches shy. However it is possible they did hit the rack at full whip on the inside plates. Either way these straps withstood way more than most people will ever do to them.

    Nylon webbing just like that is used in shipping and construction for lifting thousands of pounds so I don't see why people were worried. And half assing the stitching wouldn't save much time at all so there's no point in it.

    When dropped from even a small height that puts significantly more than 800lbs of tension onto those straps. I believe at approx 3 ft of drop that created 800lbs x 3ft = 2,400ftlbs of work those straps needed to hold in order to arrest the fall of that weight.

    I’m not impressed. I work in a warehouse with heavy machinery and 40 ft polyethylene gas pipes. Both weighing several tons. We use nylon slings slightly thinner than what you’re using there to move said tons on forklifts. We’ve had a few incidents where the equipment or materials have gotten away from us and the nylon slings NEVER fail. Some of the slings we use are rated at 12,500 lbs.
