These guys are deadly in wet, slippery conditons. Southern Chinese martial arts evolved in the hilly, wet lands of southern China, emphasizing low stances, stability and low kicks (easy to lose balance in the local terrain.) Northern martial arts evolved in the flat plains of Hebei and Henan, and developed high stances and kicks, leaps and long range attacks.
In the first National Wushu competition in the 1920s, northern Chinese martial artists dominated the competition. Their art was more suitable for the flat, open leitai, and they were also bigger in size.
But put a northern style fighter on rainy ground or a hilly slope, and the southern style fighter would usually dominate.
