Thank you for watching. I am glad that you chose this explanation, as difficult as it was, because the other by Italian ARMY is much more in-depth, has scenes from the media of families when it happened and may be too much for the Lad. (sorry if this caught you off guard Dad). One of the reasons I am ARMY is the songwriting and message. I think this is an excellent example of RM's genius in writing as he ties the movie, books, art, poetry together to tell a visual story while the lyrics themselves are seemingly a separate story meant to distract from the true meaning of the visuals....IMO. At the time RM wrote this, it was very controversial to show any support towards the victims/families....doing so was seen by the government as criticism against them and artists who did so were 'punished', so, again IMO, it was necessary for RM to write the song the way he did. There is more information about the tragedy on Wikipedia. Also, I have watched Snowpiercer and the concept of the train being run at the 'expense' of children might also be an adult topic, fyi. Borahae, ARMY grandma

The tragedy happened in April 2014. I was teaching high school--the same age as the students who were on the ferry--when this story caught my attention. It was heartbreaking and infuriating to watch this story unfold. There were 250 students, their teachers, and others (total 304) who died. The ferry began to list about 8:50a.m. An hour later, the captain, and his 1st and 2nd, were the first to be rescued They had removed their uniforms). Students sent messages to their parents. Last message a passenger sent was at 10:17 a.m. It took the Sewol 2.5 hours for the ferry to fully capsize. It was another hour and 45 minutes for the ferry to be completely submerged.
The rescue was a klusterfuk. Passangers were repeatedly told to stay in their cabins. Most obeyed the order; those who did not were rescued. The rescue was delayed. Two US navy ships plus Japanese navel ships responded to the distress call but were not allowed to help (they needed to have South Korea's permission). Most of the 172 survivors were rescued by fishing boats and commercial vessels. The coast guard finally arrived 40 minutes later, not that they did anything.
In the aftermath of the sinking there were trials, corruption, cover-ups, protests and blacklisting.
A year later, the captain was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life. Other crew members received various sentences depending on responsibility. The government attempted to suppress the protests (including telling the parents to get over it). Artists who spoke in favor of the protesters or against the government were blacklisted and faced retaliation (law suits, losing job, smear campaigns).
Spring Day--the song itself--is about loss. The MV is commentary about what was happening. The MV was released February 12, 2017 in the midst of the protests, the government retaliations and the investigation of President Park. BTS never responded to questions about what the MV represented. It was not until December (?) of 2020 that Jin confirmed that it was about the tragedy and protests. (Note: BTS believes that once art is released, it is for the viewer/listener to interpret its meaning.)

This is why we get mad when people refer to them as "just a boyband".
This song was done at risk of being blacklisted for criticizing authorities; at a time when they were still trying to establish their careers.
Keep an eye out for the Spring Day tree to show up in later content, as a sign of comfort and hope.

Jungkook wasn't actually a survivor. This is a "theory explanation" video. Every BTS member has a "role" in the music video's story. BTS has neither confirmed nor denied this theory of the song being about the tragedy (because of Korean politics and the government at the time). The song on its surface level is simply about missing your loved ones, BUT the music video is VERY INTENTIONALLY made, with LOTS of symbolism pointing it to being about the said Sewol tragedy. That's why this theory is the unanimously accepted one within the ARMY fandom. BTS keeps on addressing issues in Korea through their music, SPRING DAY is one of them. This song came out in 2017 in an album named "YOU NEVER WALK ALONE" and it is STILL on Korean charts to this day.

It took many years for them to admit any association of the song to the tragedy until their Esquire interview in 2020 when Jin admitted to it. It will be nice to read that interview again

As a fellow 'Brit' I am sure you can spot the parallels with the Hillsborough disaster. You can see the words 'you'll never walk alone' written on the carousel behind Jungkook, they also had a yellow ribbon campaign and of course the families had to fight for the truth to be revealed. Some victims families actually travelled from the UK to Korea to meet up.
On a side note, people are commenting asking you to watch the italian ARMY explanation. Sorry, I am not sure how old your son is, but that video is a very difficult watch so you may want to review it yourself first.💜

I think it’s important to stress that the song itself has a universal theme of the grief of separation from loved ones and the loss of friendship. RM and Suga originally wrote from their own experiences. It is not specifically about the Sewol disaster.
It’s the music video which can be more surely tied to that tragic event.

💜🙏Thank you for sharing your reaction to Spring Day..... I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 2 1/2 years ago..........
"I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?.
Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things.
The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve
    - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."
I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message.
I really recommend the video "What you still don't know about Spring Day" by Italian Army. She went to South Korea to research and speak with the parents of the victims and explains how the tragedy occured.... she also explains why the tragedy is linked to a tragedy that happened at a football club in England where many children died (Liverpool FC tragedy) as parents fight for justice.
The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and most of the crew fled the ship in the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink until the night - they left the warning to "not move and stay still" playing on a loop through the ship.
Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority. The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was illegally overloaded.
Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help.
And the coastguard did nothing. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering the truth, parents unable to sleep knowing their children still lay trapped at the bottom of the sea.... when they could finally access the ferry, They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye.
Only 3 crew members stayed behind to try and help the children, they all lost their lives, along with one of the rescue divers. Also, one of the civilian rescue divers later committed su!cide after having to recover so many childrens bodies, knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped.
As a parent, I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Sending your child to a school excursion, have them calling you begging for help, being on that shore watching authorities not attempting to rescue, to never have your children return, and know they are still underwater years later..... Horrific that your own government would perpetrate and then cover up such an incident... jailing dissenters for protesting. It was proven that there were high officials with financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people in the public eye (reporters, artists, etc) put on a Govt blacklist for speaking about it.
BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims in 2014 when the tragedy occurred. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know what decent and good people they are.
The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But the song itself is about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They have since been singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world was now longing for a spring day. Spring Day has never left the music charts. To this day, it is still in the top 100 charts.... 7 years later, and this song still speaks to people everywhere.
Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day reaction video.... with posting your reaction you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy. Thank you for sharing your journey, and helping to spread BTS message... Sending greetings and love from Australia.... BORAHAE💜 #WeNeverWalkAlone

Thank you for writing all of this. I had not known about the donation in 2014, or that the person went public with the facts after tiring of so much hate BTS were getting, when they were doing the right thing, and not looking to publicize it.
I watched the original Italian Army video about the tragedy, and it was intensely hard to watch and learn, to see the footage, to know children could be seen in the porthole windows begging to be rescued (represented in the BTS MV by the round windows with the message to always remember the victims on each of them).

The korean government was trying very hard to repress discussion about this. Though many artists made songs in protest BTS prominence meant this was actually quite brave of them. They publicly donated money to help the families but otherwise refused to comment. However Spring Day is played every spring to commemorate this event. BTS have made something beautiful to remember them by. An Italian ARMY made an in depth video. The coastguard whilst waiting for instructions that never came stopped civilians rescuing the children. Some luckily got past the coastguard breaking windows and getting some children out. Civilian divers went to rescue the children from the airlocks too however their hoses were deliberately slashed to prevent them. There was a large US ship nearby with the capacity and willingness to help but they needed permission. Over 300 died

Thank you for reacting! I just wanted to point out that the song itself, RM and Suga wrote it thinking about friends that they lost and/or drifted away from. The music video is theorized, but with a lot of evidence and the boys basically confirmed that the music video is about the tragedy. So, the song and music video can mean two different things but also work together to make the story. They kind of had to make the music video harder to understand because they could have been blacklisted. Also, this is the queen, since its release this song has never left the Korean charts...
For me personally I don't agree with everything that this video says but it is pretty good to get a general idea. If you are okay with it, I recommend the Italian ARMY explanation. It is longer and she talks a lot so you will have to pause a lot and maybe rewind, which is totally fine. It is super sad video and can be hard to watch for some people, so I understand it you wouldn't want to react to it.

thank you for listening and reacting to this. I first listened to this song on their Festa video, and it was literally the first time I learned BTS was a Korean group. I had heard their song Dynamite on the radio and instantly loved it so I looked up who sang it. Never knew of BTS so I searched the song on TH-cam and their Festa video was one of the clips recommend beside the actual viedo of Dynamite.. so I watched the Festa video 2nd and I absolutely fell in love with BTS from then on after hearing Spring Day. I didn't have a clue what they were singing about cause I didn't have the captions on but the song and their energy got me hooked! they are such a huge part of my heart❣️💜

the story in the mv is fictional and metaphorical at the same time. the members are stand-ins for the survivors and the students at the same time, it doesn't mean it's their experiences too.
they never officially said it relates to the sewol desaster but everyone knows, it's an open secret.
for a more comprehensive explanation i recommend the video of italianarmy.

I recommend that you make a reaction to one of the best vocalists in the world.
What is that sound? This sound is beyond our ordinary world, beyond the music we are accustomed to. Generally beyond the music that we expect to hear in films. According to the director of this film, Denis Villeneuve, Hans Zimmer worked on this music for several months - a very long time for such a project. He searched for and created these unusual sounds, trying to go beyond the boundaries of what he could do and was used to doing. As we understand it, he succeeded. We heard music here that is not only extraterrestrial, but also timeless. There are very few artists capable of producing such sounds. It's not just vocal capabilities and good technique - it's a completely different aesthetics, a different psychology, a different physiology. The artist must not only accurately hit the notes of this strange score - he must, first of all, be convincing. He should sound as if these sounds are not exotic to him at all - but a natural part of his nature. It should sound organic, it should sound beautiful at the same time - and dangerous, alarming, warning. In this case, that's exactly what it sounds like. Whether you like this sound or not, no one doubts that this sound is the most real. That this is not a sophisticated computer design - but a living timbre, living emotions, living energy of the human voice. Strange, unusual, unexpected voice. A voice that reminds us at the same time of the sounds of wild nature; and about the sounds of the beautiful singing voices of the past; and about the sounds of some other world, some universe unknown to us - sounds the existence of which we can only guess. All these amazing sounds are contained in the artist we see on this stage - Diana Ankudinova.
We look forward to your reaction to this fantastic performance.
