- There was dancing inside the Saint Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Co Tipperary during Shane MacGowan’s funeral as the Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York was performed by Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill.

As far as funeral services go this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Catholic churches are already places of joy and happiness, because they are places of prayer and reverence. I know how much you all just despise this, but, Shane Patrick MacGowan was a Catholic. He prayed daily, received holy communion, and received last rites just before he reposed. Irishman crying in New York , Shane got me through a lot of hard times , Go raibh míle maith agat , Slán agus beannacht , it’s like all my childhood memories in Ireland dieing on me , such a beautiful soul!! Hopefully my American kids will love his music when there older!!

The most magnificent rendition of Fairytail of New York that I have heard that wasn't sung by Shane. He was there though laying in his coffin and his spirit surrounded everyone

We will all miss Shane, and the talent he brought to bear on the world. Even those like me who never met him. He touched us all in some way. In his legacy he will never be forgotten. Perhaps he looks down on us now, and with Kirsty sang along with Glen, Lisa, and the fine ensemble who played for him on his way. I'd like to think so. RIP Shane, but oh to live, not just be alive. Be well everyone.
When I see this funeral with song and joy and good feelings between people, and then almost everybody sings and dance, i think to myself, maybe its the Irish that will bring our world together. to Peace and not War. God Bless all of us!

At the after party, yes, certainly. Not during the requiem mass. Notice that the only ones dancing were just a few people in the very front row. That was it. That isn’t usually allowed, but it was probably permitted by the priest given the emotional atmosphere and that fact that it was a spur of the moment type thing.
Try to remember that MacGowan was a pretty faithful catholic who prayed and took holy communion regularly. With all due respect, a lot of you are making his funeral less about his soul and more about yourselves. Catholics and Orthodox Christians do not have funerals as a “celebration of life”; they are meant for time of deep prayer to assist the soul through the death process.
If any of you reading this are catholic, please have mass intentions said for the repose of his soul. Before anything else, he was and still is a child of God. The man deserves this.

Fairytale of New York has always been my favourite Christmas song. Glad to see they didn't bow to the usual pressures and actually sang the full lyrics as it should be performed.

That was simply brilliant. I only came to know of Shane and the Pogues because of this song and my discovery of Kirsty MacColl's amazing music. Sadly, though I found I recognized some of her songs, she was already gone when I found out about her. Neither Kirsty or Shane got the recognition they deserved here in America, rather they have a small (if hardcore) following. This tribute to Shane is magnificent, and if you can hear this performance, and see those couples dancing near the end, and not find your eyes tearing up, then you need to check your soul. Thanks to GBNews for posting this. Rest in Peace, Shane MacGowan, and enjoy the dancing with Kirsty again.
