In his last film - and only Talkie - Lon Chaney recreates one of his famed Silent roles: the scheming ventriloquist Prof. Echo. Disguised as Grandma O’Grady, Echo heads a robbery ring that includes a feeble-minded strongman and a cigar-chomping little person, the latter masquerading as Grandma’s grandbaby. Known as the Man of a Thousand Faces, Chaney here displays a different kind of virtuosity as well, creating five different voices to portray Echo, Grandma, a parrot, a girl and Echo’s dummy.
    Directed By Jack Conway
Starring Lon Chaney, Lila Lee, Elliott Nugent

If Lon Chaney lived past 1930, we would have seen some of his greatest silent movie classics remade. The long lost London After Midnight would have been one of them.. He would have put other character actors out of work if he did lived on, including Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.

    • @DK-dy4bk

not Peter Lorre. He already established himself in Germany as a great actor himself.
Rains is up there with one of my favorite actors though.
Chaney though would have definitely been a sight to see. I definitely think he can be much more sinister than anyone of them though, while still maintaining his humanity. A lot of his characters, especially with Browning may have had very questionable to outright sickening morals, but he always had a soft side that made you feel for him at times. He could put on a show like no other.
The only thing I would have to say is that like with Karloff, and especially Lugosi, it is kind of annoying to see one actor over and over. Though with Chaney, he can play so many roles different from the one before and still make it like you’re watching a performer who truly is in tune with himself and his surroundings. Only other actor I believe that even comes close to Chaney is terms of versatility is Christian Bale. I doubt anyone else will ever be as effective as Chaney, because he had to be. Now the special effects and fast paced movies make acting less of the star; more of glamour, their race, and how good an actor looks now over substance.

      Hi.
The people that you mentioned in your post were not character actors such as Charles Lane, Burt Mustin, or J. Pat O' Malley --- appearing in different movies and tv shows, and almost always as a different character --- they were, in fact, well established leads.

I saw "Man Of A Thousand Faces" this weekend starring James Cagney as Lon Chaney. Excellent film.
I honestly believe that if Lon Chaney had lived another ten or twenty years, that he could have had an even _bigger_ career in talking films because he had the voice for it, whereas many did not. Alot of acting careers were destroyed by talking films for this very reason. It's also unfortunate that Lon Chaney did not live long enough to see his only child become a huge success in the movies. He would have been so proud of his son, but I have a feeling he already was just because he loved him so much.

Obscure maybe, but artistically quite well done. Talk about a ripe premise with varied and sundry comical and villainous overtones. Engaging and thoughtful acting all around (small to large) plus surprisingly artfully edgy yet poignantly subtle and complex character arcs with morally satisfyingly apt conclusions and redemptions. Perfect ending. Wow (frankly.) Also this would make an excellent jazzy musical with, of course, a fetching libretto and score slyly derived directly from the charming original. But in order to make all this ("old-fashioned museum"-freakshow Broadway-styled musical and consequent sure-thing motion-picture musical remake) happen we are (of course) going to need the generous (very generous) involvement and support of only the most brilliantly talented artists and super-perceptive patrons of the arts. How about you? Sure, count me in. Me, too. Me, three! Hey, who said that? (And so on.) But seriously, such a ripe premise...hint-hint!

Although it's a tragedy that this was his first talking movie and his final film before his death, The Unholy Three (which was a remake of a silent version of the same name that came out several years before) gave us two important things =
[1] we were shown what Lon Chaney sound like in real life, and [2] Chaney demonstrated he could be a chameleon with his vocal cords besides his face and body.
In a way, Chaney paved the way for cinematic method acting before it became mainstream.
