Yes. They were basically purses tied to the woman’s waist, and since there were so many ruffles in the skirts and petticoats; the woman would just stick her hand in between the splits and she would have a pocket! If you want more info, look up “getting dressed in the 18th century”

just as easily as without the hoops. while these ladies were having fun they did NOT show what one can do /accomplish while wearing the WHOLE ensemble.. so while 'amusing' it wasnt terribly informative. as any reenactor can tell you
I just wanted to say after watching the video that pockets were actually tied on separately to any skirts or petticoats, they were tied around the waist and laid under several layers of the clothing, dresses usually had slits in the side to allow for access to the pockets! (note: I'm not a historian, just someone who is enthusiastic about history!)
And that to walk up a flight of stairs they obv. lifted the front of the skirt a bit. I mean, Kristin is just trying to fall and die at 13.35. I wish for once they would actually research all of this. Talk to someone who wears hoops often, like a reenactor. There are plenty of videos on YT that show how to pee (or rather how to sit on a modern toilet and how to hold a chamberpot under a dress, how to get dressed, how to sit, how to ride a horse in a full victorian outfit (ie, skirts, dresses, corsets, chemises, hoops or bustles etc).
they did have pockets just not the ones we have today! it was a lil bag attached to the waist that u put on before the hoop skirt, the skirt had a hole for easy access to it. theres this lady i love in youtube that shows u how they went to the loo and multiple how they got ready in x area!!
they did have pockets! google pocket bags! they were tied around the waist and all the skirts had slits to have access to the pockets! Also they did have toilets. And that corsets were worn underneath skirts not over the top.
Pockets were common place in the 18th century but crinolines and farthingales did not allow for pockets. 18th century petticoats had slits so one could reach their pockets. So yes to the pockets but not in the eras represented by Devin and Kristin.
When women wore corsets and large skirts daily, these corsets were mostly worn for support and were made out of more flexible materials. The skirts also had pockets that were under the skirt fabric but over the hoop. The actual fabric skirt has holes in it that allowed you to access them. It is really fascinating how these women were able to do things while also wearing so many layers.
Echo 9970 well whale bones were extremely expensive and mostly used in corsets for the aristocracy. "normal" women (aka 95% of them) would wear stills made with wood or similar materials. (plus, 'whale bones' were not like...actual bones of a whale..... you know right?)
Actually, the skirts that went over the hooped underskirt had holes for pockets and they had what they called hip pouches which went under the fabric skirts, so yes, they did have pockets
Actually, there's a 1700 "hoop skirt lite" called "pocket paniers" (panier=oldschool French for basket) that you tied around your waist for those buffet table hips from the Marie Antoinette days. And yes, people hid snacks in them! (Along with hankies or an extra fan.) The big ones for deluxe buffet table hips ("grand panier" meaning "huge basket") were shaped like squashed farthingales and had secrets slits for the pockets you could tie on under them to hide the goods :) The secret pocket technique stuck around with some hoop skirt models, actually :3
The majority of the dresses had pockets, but it was a separate garment, basically two bags spaced out on a ribbon, that you would tie around your waist over the hoop and under your dress, then the dress had slits in it for you to reach the pockets.
Really wish they took more time to do research like this when they make their videos. This “ oh look at us we’re so silly and this is crazy” is getting old. Like take the challenge seriously or make it a full thing. Idk. Thanks for sharing.
Verified by costumers on TH-cam! Also, in the olden days, they had chamber pots with handles. They didn’t wear underwear like we do, so there was nothing to pull down or take off. They just stuck the chamber pot under the skirts.
Low key losing my mind rn. Keep in mind that you are wearing petticoats. These are primarily undergarments which would be less beautiful. Petticoats mainly provide the silhouette. Women in skirts wore underwear that covered the legs and would have an opening in the crotch women could still readily relieve themselves. ON POCKETS Like a hidden fanny pack a woman would tie a 'pocket' around their waist. All period skirts that slit on the side to access that pocket. A good way of thinking about this is: Lucy Locket who lost her pocket. The strings around her waist came undone and the pocket fell out of the skirts.
Couldn't agree more with you. Not to consider that the floor long skirt was manly for balls, dinners and theaters. Normaly you would have an ankel lenght skirt so you didn't get tons of dirt on the skirt
8:47 the hoop skirts didn’t have pockets, but women in the 1700s would often wear pocket bags around their hips. they actually seemed to have much more space than pockets today. ~the more you know~
My grandma is a costume designer who specializes in historical costumes. She used to love going to civil war reenactments. She likes to say you're not a real woman until you've worn a corset and a hoop skirt. I was a real woman by the age of 8 😂 (I loooved playing dress up 😂).
Sarah ohyeagirl yes!!! I was also wearing hoop skirts and attending civil war reenactments by the age of 8! 😂 Make room for the real women here in the comment section 😏
then im going to say you arent a real man till youve dressed like a cowboy which means i was a real man at 7 years old. it was on my birthday which is also halloween
8:46 Devin what are you talking about!? Those dresses DID have pockets back then! It wasn't apart of the skirt, but in amongst all the layers they had on ladies would attach pockets (quite deep ones too) by a string around their waist. Then there'd be little slits in all their skirts so they could reach through and access the pockets. Ever heard of "Lucy Locket lost her pocket. Kitty Fisher found it. Not a penny in it, but a ribbon round it." Those strings around the pocket could come undone and thus they could lose their pockets.
Rebellious Winter eh, i think in that particular example they're talking about the pockets prostitutes tied around their thigh (cus the songs about prostitution in the 18th crntury). But your first point remains. Women did have pockets :)
Yes! Having pockets in the Victorian era often meant wearing sort of a tool belt under the hoop skirt (usually with more room than men's coat pockets). Women also had chatelains that they could wear over their dresses. These were basically belts with chains that they clipped their keys, coin purses, pocket knives, smelling salts, notepads, whistles, and whatever else they wanted to. You can see some examples here: www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/the-killer-mobile-device-for-victorian-women/
Thank you! Went into the comments to find someone who actually knows about historic pockets telling Lady Lake off, was not disappointed. I work with 18th century costumes and I was very irritated when they ranted about "no pockets" and "pooping in holes in the ground". Please do a little historic research Lady Like.
I think Lady Like forgot that these are technically underwear. You would never have worn them like that so there was no need for a pocket on one of the lowest layers of your outfit
Also, I kept thinking about the video I've seen of a girl that specifically shows how to go to the bathroom in historic clothing and other such videos on TH-cam. It just feels like they "half assed" it.
Sean McGuire hehe. I know, I was dying inside, watching this. I'm like, your not wearing proper petticoats, or a corset and full costume. Try sitting in an office chair in THAT!
ssurla true. Very true. When I reenact, I have a whole routine. One time trying it isn't really how it is. But it gets easier with practice. I'd like to see them wear full out historical attire with corsets or stays, and even try bustle. Ive never worn a bustle, but id like to one day, and it would be hilarious to watch them try😂
Yes! I'm a historical dressmaker too! They kept on showing images from two different centuries. 18th-century panniers are not at all the same as 19th-century crinolines! Plese and thank you...
Actually they didn’t go to the bathroom in holes in the ground, they had little pots called chamber pots which they did there business in, the pot was small enough that a women could hold it under her skirt and do her business. At least that’s what I’ve seen in a video about Elizabethan fashion
Chloe P yup! This girl I watch collects and wears Elizabethan dresses and has a video demonstrating how they would have done it back in the day, footage starts at 00:33 th-cam.com/video/NUHeSTDv_24/w-d-xo.html
XD I love how Devein is like “why didn’t they have pockets?!” But they did they were huge pockets with strings that they would tie around their waist under more layers so they would have 1 maybe 2 pockets
Hoopskirts don't have pockets because they are underwear, to be fair though the overskirt wouldn't have pockets either. During the late 18th century to mid ish 19th century women would wear small bags called reticules over their petticoats with an opening in the overskirt so they could access it.
They keep saying how heavy they were and how much fabric there was. Need I remind you guys those are called petti coats . They are like the undershirt .Your final clothing pieces went over them and you would been shamed publicly indecent if caught were nothing over top of these skirts. !
liz i know I’ve worn a Victorian hoop skirt like Kristins and I had the full outfit on with actual clothes on top and a bag and a heavy wig they definitely did not get the full experience
@@bella.m9952 then maybe call it by its proper name? either crinolines crinolettes or bustles, since victorian fashions spanned over almost a hundred years. i also dont see what youd be wearing the wig for, maybe your thinking of the 18th century and then you wouldve been wearing panniers
The lack of pockets was because they were only wearing the petticoat (first layer over the hoop). If they had an entire get up, they would've had pockets with ample room. Do another video where they wear the whole dress and skirt with all the layers and everything!
They actually did have pockets, they were hidden sacks within, and there were usually slits in the many petticoats and skirts to reach said pocket. I honestly would LOVE to see Ladylike wesr full victorian outfits for a day
First off, I want to say that a simpler way to try and sit in a hoop skirt is to lift it by the hoop. In other words, by a section of wire that makes up the hoop skirt, and then sitting down. It helps immensely. As for the pockets, they can be tied underneath a skirt with slits on the sides for hands to go through. I'm surprised that Miss Saito didn't say anything about this.
Did you guys know that while these types of skirts were in fashion it was considered "naughty and lewd" to show your ankles? It's true. Also women did have "pockets" in the form of a drawstring purse tied to the inside of the skirt
"while these types of skirts were in fashion" you know thats the span of 2 centurys right? there have been fashions in the middle of this that did in fact show the ankle, especially when the robe a la polonaise was in fashion, and it paved the way for exciting new footwear that could now be seen
The pockets were typically in-between the layers of the skirts bc there was the cage like structure and then 1 to 2 layers of petty coat covering and usually a pouch or small bag would be placed in between the layers to give the women a "pocket" like effect
As a costumer I'm internally screaming at the dirty skirts. Getting that stuff dry cleaned is EXPENSIVE. But fun fact: the "subway sandwich" hips are called panniers (pan-yays).
I'm not exactly a fashion history expert, but yes, women did in fact have pockets, it was necessary, especially for working class. The pockets just weren't built in to one of the first layers of the dress.
They did have Pockets though. well it was more of a pouch that would be tied around the waist under the skirt that could be accessed from slits in the outer layers of fabric.
those are basically the underwear of giant hooped dresses, imagine layers of fabric on top of those skirts, with yes pockets. only all in layers and slits, small patches of fabric to layer over one area.. i'd like to see more people try out old fashion
VampFaye not everyone could afford to have servants. Hoopskirts were considered the proper thing to wear at the time so unfortunately, all women no matter their status would have to wear them. So many women (probably more women then not) would have to complete chores with hoopskirts on.
They did have pockets tho, and way more layers, it'd be cool if you wore the "whole" outfit, like the petticoat, the pocket bag, the hip expanders (??? Idk what they're called), the corset, and the outside of the dress
Glad someone else mentioned it! They did have pockets, they just tied them around their waist. Which honestly sounds awesome getting to like transfer your pockets to new outfits, it's like a purse that's inside your clothes!
8:56 actually at that point the pockets should still have been tied on underneath the skirt and accessed through slits in the side. Pockets were never really sewn into womens clothing, they were always separate pouches on their own little belt (because women had the space in their clothing to allow for that whereas men's clothing (especially their pants) went through quite a few tight phases)

Yes they did. It was, i think, in the 1900s when a slimmer silhouette was preferred that the pockets got "eliminated" from the dresses.

I would have love to see you guys in the dresses that go on top of the hoop skirt
They only did half the challenge by not wearing corsets. Another group did a video on corsets but it was done really wrong.
Ya I was disappointed they didn't wear a full dress
They would then have pockets 😂
It's too much expensive to afford
"How dothey go through their chores?"
But the real question is, how did they get through DOORS?? O.o
just as easily as without the hoops. while these ladies were having fun they did NOT show what one can do /accomplish while wearing the WHOLE ensemble.. so while 'amusing' it wasnt terribly informative. as any reenactor can tell you

@@zhamier261 like a crab
They actually had to make wider doors for the women to fit through!
Alejandra Rodrígues priorattire ;)
I love her!
MrsInAbox thank u!
I love these skirts, they just seem fun to wear. If they became a trend that people actually wore, I’d be so down.
Olivia same!
Also me. I think I was born in the wrong times period
Olivia to be honest, it took women centuries to break free from those expectations.
U should make it a trend and start wearing them
Olivia even if they werent a trend id still be down wait if i had one id wear it
I suggest you : spend one day in traditional Greek costumes!
they did have pockets! google pocket bags! they were tied around the waist and all the skirts had slits to have access to the pockets! Also they did have toilets. And that corsets were worn underneath skirts not over the top.
Rainiepie I was gonna comment that
Oh, good, I don’t have to do all of the explaining on my own! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Agh I was going to comment that. They did literally no research for this shoot
Agreed. More research needed, even if it was just watching priorattire videos.
I Like that unlike other people commenting on this subject you're not angry you're just informative! 😁
"They were uncomfortable and hot."
"You couldn't do anything."
*Bernadette Banner and Abby Cox would like to know your location*
I would use that to get food into the theater. Like hang a basket of goodies on the wire.
I know I know it isn't practical
Jiwoo Yoon lmao😂😂😂
You would get more space
Actually, there's a 1700 "hoop skirt lite" called "pocket paniers" (panier=oldschool French for basket) that you tied around your waist for those buffet table hips from the Marie Antoinette days. And yes, people hid snacks in them! (Along with hankies or an extra fan.)
The big ones for deluxe buffet table hips ("grand panier" meaning "huge basket") were shaped like squashed farthingales and had secrets slits for the pockets you could tie on under them to hide the goods :)
The secret pocket technique stuck around with some hoop skirt models, actually :3
Heck yes its practical!
Ngl for the Cinderella live action premiere I made a dress and hid food in the underskirt. Yup
The majority of the dresses had pockets, but it was a separate garment, basically two bags spaced out on a ribbon, that you would tie around your waist over the hoop and under your dress, then the dress had slits in it for you to reach the pockets.
a victorian fanny pack?
human saddle bags
Really wish they took more time to do research like this when they make their videos. This “ oh look at us we’re so silly and this is crazy” is getting old. Like take the challenge seriously or make it a full thing. Idk. Thanks for sharing.
The key to using the restroom while wearing a hoop skirt is to face the toilet. Much, much easier.
I've been to a few steampunk conventions and have worn a hoop skirt and bussles. It just made sense to try it that way, and it was much easier.
I just love how u know that xx
Storm Tater ii
Verified by costumers on TH-cam! Also, in the olden days, they had chamber pots with handles. They didn’t wear underwear like we do, so there was nothing to pull down or take off. They just stuck the chamber pot under the skirts.
Toilets were a thing in the 1880s, but I can definitely understand why a chamber pot would be easier!
Video: "I wish they had pockets."
Me: "You're not doing it right."
Also my wedding dress had hoops and I loved it!
I need more Kevin McShane in my life. Please make more content with him in it. Thanks
If youre gonna wear a hoop, you need to wear a corset too. It'll be like a Renn Faire all up in there!
They've done corsets before.... terribly, and with not a single thought to seasoning, fit, or proper wear, but they "tried it."
Fuck corsets I’d rather be pregnant and have an excuse for not wearing a corset
Petition for someone to make a more modern, practical version of hoopskirts cos I'd wear that ALL the time
sad face have you not heard of lolita fashion
pastel priskittles that's a specific genre, which has a Victorian theme. Let's make a new genre but for modern style.
Google modern crinoline skirts or petticoats. You'll find more comfortable ones without the steel hoops but give a similar shape.
+
I wear petticoats all the time. I look fabulous. 10/10 would recommend. There are comfortable modern options.
When she said that Kevin is grumpy all the time but he lit up when he got to dance with her... my heart freaking MELTED
ON POCKETS
Like a hidden fanny pack a woman would tie a 'pocket' around their waist. All period skirts that slit on the side to access that pocket. A good way of thinking about this is: Lucy Locket who lost her pocket. The strings around her waist came undone and the pocket fell out of the skirts.
dotlol123 not all women wore drawers under either, many just went free with just their under petticoat 😝
dotlol123 THANK YOU!!
Couldn't agree more with you. Not to consider that the floor long skirt was manly for balls, dinners and theaters. Normaly you would have an ankel lenght skirt so you didn't get tons of dirt on the skirt
dotlol123 omg I am so glad someone else noticed this!
Who are you some hoopskirt expert?? Lol jk... I did not know any of this😂
8:47 the hoop skirts didn’t have pockets, but women in the 1700s would often wear pocket bags around their hips. they actually seemed to have much more space than pockets today.

Make room for the real women here in the comment section 😏
Sarah ohyeagirl Omg. Your grandma sounds cool. I'd love a costume designer to help me. My stuff looks subpar.
then im going to say you arent a real man till youve dressed like a cowboy which means i was a real man at 7 years old. it was on my birthday which is also halloween
Gwen Berlin yeah she makes a lot of my cosplays lol comes in handy to have a grandma who's a costume designer 😂
Sarah ohyeagirl sure would. I'm trying to make lolita dresses, but it's so difficult..I give up on the princess style dresses.

Devin looked so pleasant and magical when she danced and when she was holding the coffee in her two hands. I’ve been blessed to see such a pure image
Jessica Emmas like when we wear Dirndl in Germany the dress and apron don’t usually have pockets so we tie pockets around our thighs
June works with Starkid and I CAN’T I LOVE I STARKID
Emma Anderson sksks lover 🤠
I reenact, and so I wear corsets and hoops a lot. I adore them all. All of the pictures they show are of grand panniers, though.
Yes! That's what I said, too! As a historical costumer, I have never been so frustrated watching a LadyLike video hahaha
1:07 “do it hard like our ancestors” I want that written on a top omg
Actually they didn’t go to the bathroom in holes in the ground, they had little pots called chamber pots which they did there business in, the pot was small enough that a women could hold it under her skirt and do her business. At least that’s what I’ve seen in a video about Elizabethan fashion
Yes and there were also “toilets” similar to long drop toilets found at campgrounds
True. Out houses were only introduced in the early 1900s late 1800s
Chloe P yup! This girl I watch collects and wears Elizabethan dresses and has a video demonstrating how they would have done it back in the day, footage starts at 00:33
th-cam.com/video/NUHeSTDv_24/w-d-xo.html
Priorattire channel explains thoroughly and illustrates how this was managed.
Chloe P dang this girl did her research 😱😱😱😱😱👻💀☠️👍🏾💅🏾🤙🏾☝🏾👑👑👑👑👑😭👑👑
XD I love how Devein is like “why didn’t they have pockets?!” But they did they were huge pockets with strings that they would tie around their waist under more layers so they would have 1 maybe 2 pockets
Hoopskirts don't have pockets because they are underwear, to be fair though the overskirt wouldn't have pockets either. During the late 18th century to mid ish 19th century women would wear small bags called reticules over their petticoats with an opening in the overskirt so they could access it.
"i got freddy all up underneath the skirt which felt good" honEY THAT DOES NOT SOUND OK

They keep saying how heavy they were and how much fabric there was. Need I remind you guys those are called petti coats . They are like the undershirt .Your final clothing pieces went over them and you would been shamed publicly indecent if caught were nothing over top of these skirts. !
The "skirts" they were wearing were waaay too short and they needed to pull them down alot more because you could see so much of the petticoat!!
elizabeth lemire that was a like 2 thousand years ago it’s 2019 people were worse
right? not even to mention the actual crinoline showing aswell
liz i know I’ve worn a Victorian hoop skirt like Kristins and I had the full outfit on with actual clothes on top and a bag and a heavy wig they definitely did not get the full experience
I honestly would LOVE to see Ladylike wesr full victorian outfits for a day
I'm so glad we have finally acknowledged Starkid in a Buzzfeed video with Dev in it (unless I missed one)!
They are petticoats. They are underwear so there weren't any slits for pockets i don't think. i don't know about the sitting though...
ilikebunnies How do you know this much.
I hope Kevin has a good life, idk but I just really hope he has a good happy life
Janean Francois I do. Thank you.
Yall kevin replied im so excited 😭😭😭😭
Ok so we're just gonna ignore the fact that Devin was Cho Chang in A Very Potter Musical???

As a costumer I'm internally screaming at the dirty skirts. Getting that stuff dry cleaned is EXPENSIVE. But fun fact: the "subway sandwich" hips are called panniers (pan-yays).
Mariah Bowen i low-key wanna wear one of those skirts
I was checking to see if anyone else was peeved by how much they dirtied the skirts or if I was being overly sensitive!
Came down to grumble too!! 😂 internally pained
I'm sure they paid for the drycleaning :)
Mariah Bowen I think that's why they only did the undergarments. 😂
I literally rewatch this every day for this part 9:33
He is good!! I would really love to dance with him 🙄🙊
adorable
I'm not exactly a fashion history expert, but yes, women did in fact have pockets, it was necessary, especially for working class. The pockets just weren't built in to one of the first layers of the dress.
The point was to show wealth and superiority by wearing the hoop skirt because you can’t do chores or walk easily so it shows you didn’t have to.
Spike the unicorn mug And also because of how much fabric, and how expensive the fabric actually was. But I guess that’s more obvious.
Where do I put my phone? There’s no pockets in these!
Yes, because people had phones in the Victoria times.
They did have Pockets though. well it was more of a pouch that would be tied around the waist under the skirt that could be accessed from slits in the outer layers of fabric.
xD
hilarious!
Chicken McNuggets 😂
Pockets aren’t only for phones 🤯
those are basically the underwear of giant hooped dresses, imagine layers of fabric on top of those skirts, with yes pockets. only all in layers and slits, small patches of fabric to layer over one area.. i'd like to see more people try out old fashion

"How did they do their chores?" They didn't. They had servants to do them....
Exactly!
VampFaye women who didn't have servants did there chores with hoopskirts also. The Laura ingalss books?
VampFaye not everyone could afford to have servants. Hoopskirts were considered the proper thing to wear at the time so unfortunately, all women no matter their status would have to wear them. So many women (probably more women then not) would have to complete chores with hoopskirts on.
VampFaye they had that

Emma Solc Yes it is! Good for her!
Woot woot!
They did have pockets tho, and way more layers, it'd be cool if you wore the "whole" outfit, like the petticoat, the pocket bag, the hip expanders (??? Idk what they're called), the corset, and the outside of the dress
Hamiltrash Chloe the" hip expanders" or "hip rolls" are soft bustles.
Glad someone else mentioned it! They did have pockets, they just tied them around their waist. Which honestly sounds awesome getting to like transfer your pockets to new outfits, it's like a purse that's inside your clothes!
Hamiltrash Chloe
The hip rolls were not a thing anymore in 1840s-50s, so they would not have fit with the hoops. Same with the farthingale.
8:50
There were pockets if you had a full outfit. There would be tones of pockets.
Much more than we do now😒

8:56 actually at that point the pockets should still have been tied on underneath the skirt and accessed through slits in the side.
Pockets were never really sewn into womens clothing, they were always separate pouches on their own little belt (because women had the space in their clothing to allow for that whereas men's clothing (especially their pants) went through quite a few tight phases)
