You're paying the corporation TH-cam, you're not paying the youtuber who produced the content. They spent hours, if not days of their lives producing that video. You pay $13/mo for a service, out of which TH-cam takes a big share. Then they "distribute" the remaining amount proportionally amongst the channels whose videos you watched. How much do you think is left to each channel after that? They need external sponsorships to survive and produce the quality content you like to watch, it's simple economics.
Creators don't want to be glorified sales, they don't want to do ad-reads, but Google has depressed the price of advertising, and therefore what they can pay their creators, so they are forced to in order to continue to pay the bills.
The censorship is what gets me. Im paying to both have TH-cam decide what I may or may not watch, and to censor me. Without any explanation as to why they are doing it...

I refuse to watch any advertisements. If I click on a video and the intro advert is longer than 10 seconds I click off and immediately back on to get a shorter advert. If an advert longer than 5 seconds comes on part way through the video I mute and look away till it’s done then unmute. If an advert is longer than 20 seconds, part way through the video I just leave the video all together. TH-cam can’t make me watch or listen to adverts.

Self-hosting is the way forward. Increasingly, people have gigabit fiber connections so throwing an old PC in the corner to serve their videos to the world is not a silly idea.
The issue is getting people to return to this model. An entire generation has grown comfortable with having a social media platform do all the heavy lifting for them. The ability to host and create their own website and forum is fast becoming a dying art.

About 10% of creators earn ad revenue. A massively larger portion of creators earn money through affiliates, sponsorships, and fan contributions. And most people putting content on TH-cam aren't doing it to try to earn money.
I had no choice. TH-cam made the ads just intolerable. 10+ minute long infomercials and then not even cutting back to the video at the end. They broke me.

TH-cam has censored their way out of true, genuine content. Now, it's full of influencer shills, Hollywood wannabes, rant/fail compilations, and cat videos.
What is more likely true is they undercharged in order to get the control of the market and took the hit that caused. With less competition there is less need for that so they can start pricing to a point where they are not taking that hit. It's extremely common throughout the industry.
Who was youtube's initial competitor? We now have Bitchute, Odysee, Rumble, etc., and they're not gouging the mess out of their viewers (Odysee has recently gone completely ad-free). There is zero need for ads to sustain themselves. It's all greed.

Yes and no. Monopoly is one reason for sure. Another is that exploitation of prices is no longer being regulated by gov. In the US the price of produce has doubled since 2018. No monopolies there. Just gov agreeing to everything big corp wants.
Paying £12.99 pm for individual membership. Haven’t received any notice about a potential planned increases. 60% price hike is huge, on top of already expensive service- i had to run a currency conversion calculator as I had no idea what a conversion rate was.
It's actually a 56% increase. He's subscribed through the Apple App Store, which charges Google a $9 fee to process his monthly charge through the Store. Google passes that fee along. He'd be paying $108 less annually if he subscribed directly through TH-cam. And despite that 56% increase, the Family Plan in Singapore still costs less than the Family Plan in the U.S. after exchange rate conversion.
There's plenty of free ad blockers that block youtube adverts flawlessly, plenty of pc magazines, reddit forums etc advising which ones to use. There's also numerous people (Louis Rossman springs to mind) that have made similar videos about why they've decided to stop using premium too. You're definitely not alone in this. As you said, the price itself has little to do with it. It's the exploitation, if they don't mind exploiting me, I don't mind blocking their ads and/or watching elsewhere.

They already cut costs significantly by dropping the tv show production division (Cobra Kai which is on Netflix now started as a TH-cam show, for example). Don’t remember seeing a reduction to reflect that! More annoyingly, TH-cam music app is absolutely garbage. The quality of the search function compared to apple is embarrassing. If they could at least fix that it would mean something, but won’t happen unless people unsubscribe.
Sounds like you’re paying thru the Apple App Store. Google don’t let Apple take a cut, instead they make Apple add on the 30%. Instead, buy it direct from Google, I paid €13.99 for premium one week ago. It doesn’t make the price increase any more palatable but at least it’s something. 👍🏻
It's the problem of the platform service - and its ducking us everywhere. Because every platform service exists for the sole purpose to amass this kind of power. We need to decentralize in many areas.
Family package in Europe went for 18 to 26, also a big increase. I don't have a separate music subscription so it still works, but certainly seeing what's happening here.

Just a few weeks ago I upgraded to a family plan for 17.99€. Yesterday I got an announcement that the price will go up to 27.99€. To me that's just ridiculous so I cancelled my subscription right away. "We don't make these decisions lightly". Cut the crap. You are just greedy.
Yep. I'd pay if it were justified. But it's not! It's price gouging and greed! In Australia, it went from 11.99 to 22.90, similar to where you are. I have a free account, but the adverts have become so contrasting that watching any video is just a waste of time (way worse than free-to-air TV). To find out that there is a 60% increase for no good reason is vile. I'll be looking elsewhere for my content. I worry about those content creators losing followers and advise that people get onto other platforms to share their content. I'll be sticking with Spotify for now. I'd be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions for different platforms. I pay for other services, and would be happy to pay premium to youtube if it were not taking advantage of others. Its so sickening! TH-cam was my preferred place for content as I rarely use any social media and love informative videos.

I agree...it has happened many times in the past...once a company gets so big, so dominant in any market...it does not see a need to give good pricing...a pay more and more with out notice or connected to any price indexing...some call it greed...I would say possibly in this case it may have something to do with the massive investment in AI infrastructure in the last few years at Google that is not actually paying for itself...so they just put the prices up ever where they can to try and get money to pay for the investment that is not currently living up to the AI sales pitch big tech was sold in the last 10 years...

I also cancelled my family subscription. Will get Tidal for music and use "the alternatives" to watch TH-cam videos but I will probably use the platform less
The bottom line is that ALL the streaming services (and creators) make more from ad revenue than they do from subscriptions. I pay a subscription to watch Eurosport, but it still has ad breaks?! The ads always find a way to get through, so why pay a subscription to avoid them? Subscriptions only ever go up - it's best just to have as few of them in your life as you can.
@@ssjlkrillin I had to Google Odysee as I'd never heard of it. If the platform is less mainstream then it would be less enticing to advertisers. In such cases you'd be better off with a subscription model.
I think that I may have a solution for you. Apple is a competitor of Google and while it is currently illegal for them to do so, they charge a hefty fee for you to pay your Google fees through your Apple store, ie via your iPhone. Cancel YTP and sign up again on a PC. Hope this helps others.
Cancelling subscriptions won’t make much difference to them.. if you still watch. They make money on ads, if you subscribe to get rid of ads, they make money on subs. Free market economics breaks down when monopolies exist. One of the roles of govt is to break up monopolies and control price gouging. Pressuring govt members might have an impact, if enough people spoke up.
From an antitrust perspective, TH-cam is a not a monopoly. Monopoly entails market exclusion of others who have the capacity to compete. That's not happening here. It's the sheer cost of trying to do what TH-cam does that currently prevents peer competition.

I very rarely "defend" Google on anything, but calling TH-cam a monopoly is also specious and incorrect in the antitrust sense. A monopoly in the antitrust sense means that there are competitors capable of competing, maybe even becoming peers, but they are being excluded from the market in a variety of specific, intentional ways by the monopoly. That's not happening here. There are many competitors to TH-cam, but to be a TH-cam peer or near-peer would require the ability and WILLINGNESS to pay for the infrastructure necessary to do what TH-cam does at the scale at which it does it, and to try to acquire the audience that makes TH-cam so massive.
The main problem in my opinion is the intrusive advertising. I do understand that advertising is necessary in order to keep the service free of charge for most of the customers. If TH-cam would be for paying subscribers only, its coverage would be much lower than it is now. But, when people are forced to watch 2-3 ads in the beginning of each video, and the ads can be the same for two weeks for every video, and when a 30 minute video gets interrupted by an ad in every five minutes or less, it is impossible to watch these videos without an adblocker, or paying for the premium service. From the advertiser's point of view, the problem is that nobody is watching these ads, but are doing everything they can to avoid the annoyance. If you want to sel ads, you should not sell a way to get rid of them after you first make the advertising as annoying as possible. You can make money, it is not forbidden, but Google is behaving like they couldn't care less for those bringing the money in.
I agree with a lot of what you are saying. All I'll add, as a former advertiser , is that we are always seeking repeat impressions so it's kind of the advertisers fault also. Google is giving the advertisers what they want

The problem, is that too many people believe that they need eg.Facebook, TH-cam, X etc etc. and that they cannot function without it. Another change happened when TH-cam became a way to advertise, promote and sell products where manufacturers paid shills for positive reviews eg. guitars and pedals. Speaking personally, Facebook sanctioned me by suspending my account for a week, I think, for uploading a video of myself playing a cover of a song. Five minutes after that sanction, I deleted my Facebook account and never returned. Twitter was a similar thing (many thousands of followers), account suspended for calling out one covid denier. Resulting in me deleting Twitter. some years later I tried X and that lasted for about a month, because it is a cesspit of politicised lies - deleted. This happened because I have self discipline. TH-cam is on very thin ice with me, for actively supporting extreme political accounts and misinformation. TH-cam is apparently incapable of effectively policing its own members within its own framework of acceptable usage and so one day, it too will be deleted without a second thought. This outcome is the only thing these massive corporations recognise.
So I can only assume you've discovered that you should unsubscribe from Apple's offering and go direct. I can't understand how you stretch this issue out over 9.05 minutes ...

Watch TH-cam only on PC where you can block ads. Once my sub runs out, I’m deleting it off my phone and TV.

It's the problem of the platform service - and its ducking us everywhere. Because every platform service exists for the sole purpose to amass this kind of power. We need to decentralize in many areas.

Family package in Europe went for 18 to 26, also a big increase. I don't have a separate music subscription so it still works, but certainly seeing what's happening here.
This video makes a valid point, but it could have been made in one tenth the time: “I’m dropping premium because of an unjustified 60% increase in my country.” They’ve done nothing to the platform that makes it better, so there’s no reason to absorb that amount of greed.” Just as much information in a more effective format.
I’m paying $32.99 AUD for a family account. I’m starting to watch it a lot less than I used to but still enough to warrant the exorbitant fee.
Just a few weeks ago I upgraded to a family plan for 17.99€. Yesterday I got an announcement that the price will go up to 27.99€. To me that's just ridiculous so I cancelled my subscription right away. "We don't make these decisions lightly". Cut the crap. You are just greedy.

Yep. I'd pay if it were justified. But it's not! It's price gouging and greed! In Australia, it went from 11.99 to 22.90, similar to where you are. I have a free account, but the adverts have become so contrasting that watching any video is just a waste of time (way worse than free-to-air TV). To find out that there is a 60% increase for no good reason is vile. I'll be looking elsewhere for my content. I worry about those content creators losing followers and advise that people get onto other platforms to share their content. I'll be sticking with Spotify for now. I'd be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions for different platforms. I pay for other services, and would be happy to pay premium to youtube if it were not taking advantage of others. Its so sickening! TH-cam was my preferred place for content as I rarely use any social media and love informative videos.
Have you logged into the TH-cam account area in your browser and separate from any Apple application or Apple subscription area to see if the price is different when you pay TH-cam directly?

I agree...it has happened many times in the past...once a company gets so big, so dominant in any market...it does not see a need to give good pricing...a pay more and more with out notice or connected to any price indexing...some call it greed...I would say possibly in this case it may have something to do with the massive investment in AI infrastructure in the last few years at Google that is not actually paying for itself...so they just put the prices up ever where they can to try and get money to pay for the investment that is not currently living up to the AI sales pitch big tech was sold in the last 10 years...

I see your frustration & it is completely understandable. I think here in the US the problem is not only the monopoly but the censorship. I mean where do you have a product that you can increase the price & cut back on the parts that make that product? So, the only way to counter this is to have more products. I don't know who is coming up against them and rivaling their power but as a bully the end is always the same someone will eventually knock them down. I wonder if this is YT passing on the Apple increase on subscriptions made through iPhones? I found that it was much cheaper to subscribe to YT premium via my windows desktop. Subscribing through my iPhone was about 30% more expensive.

The price increase is still substantial for the family plan, but the individual plan increase is the same U.S. customers paid previously, and the cost of the family plan after conversion of Singapore Dollars to USD is actually slightly lower than what U.S. customers pay.

The bottom line is that ALL the streaming services (and creators) make more from ad revenue than they do from subscriptions. I pay a subscription to watch Eurosport, but it still has ad breaks?! The ads always find a way to get through, so why pay a subscription to avoid them? Subscriptions only ever go up - it's best just to have as few of them in your life as you can.
If this is true, why has Odysee gone ad-free? They could likely use the revenue a lot more than youtube right now.
@@ssjlkrillin I had to Google Odysee as I'd never heard of it. If the platform is less mainstream then it would be less enticing to advertisers. In such cases you'd be better off with a subscription model.
I think that I may have a solution for you. Apple is a competitor of Google and while it is currently illegal for them to do so, they charge a hefty fee for you to pay your Google fees through your Apple store, ie via your iPhone.
Cancel YTP and sign up again on a PC.

Cancelling subscriptions won’t make much difference to them.. if you still watch. They make money on ads, if you subscribe to get rid of ads, they make money on subs.
Free market economics breaks down when monopolies exist.
One of the roles of govt is to break up monopolies and control price gouging. Pressuring govt members might have an impact, if enough people spoke up.
From an antitrust perspective, TH-cam is a not a monopoly. Monopoly entails market exclusion of others who have the capacity to compete. That's not happening here. It's the sheer cost of trying to do what TH-cam does that currently prevents peer competition.

I very rarely "defend" Google on anything, but calling TH-cam a monopoly is also specious and incorrect in the antitrust sense. A monopoly in the antitrust sense means that there are competitors capable of competing, maybe even becoming peers, but they are being excluded from the market in a variety of specific, intentional ways by the monopoly. That's not happening here. There are many competitors to TH-cam, but to be a TH-cam peer or near-peer would require the ability and WILLINGNESS to pay for the infrastructure necessary to do what TH-cam does at the scale at which it does it, and to try to acquire the audience that makes TH-cam so massive.
I guess after taking on ad blockers, it's time to put the other foot down and make even more money.
The main problem in my opinion is the intrusive advertising. I do understand that advertising is necessary in order to keep the service free of charge for most of the customers. If TH-cam would be for paying subscribers only, its coverage would be much lower than it is now. But, when people are forced to watch 2-3 ads in the beginning of each video, and the ads can be the same for two weeks for every video, and when a 30 minute video gets interrupted by an ad in every five minutes or less, it is impossible to watch these videos without an adblocker, or paying for the premium service. From the advertiser's point of view, the problem is that nobody is watching these ads, but are doing everything they can to avoid the annoyance. If you want to sel ads, you should not sell a way to get rid of them after you first make the advertising as annoying as possible. You can make money, it is not forbidden, but Google is behaving like they couldn't care less for those bringing the money in.
I agree with a lot of what you are saying. All I'll add, as a former advertiser , is that we are always seeking repeat impressions so it's kind of the advertisers fault also. Google is giving the advertisers what they want

Thanks. Your analysis confirms for me NOT to subscribe, simply because of such monopolistic greed. It is systemic and is symptomatic of the current reshuffling of geo-political and why the international economy is so chaotic. Nothing demonstrates performance better than past performance; and history is the ultimate depository of performance. History shows 'Big' or 'Bully' does not win in the long-term.

The problem, is that too many people believe that they need eg.Facebook, TH-cam, X etc etc. and that they cannot function without it. Another change happened when TH-cam became a way to advertise, promote and sell products where manufacturers paid shills for positive reviews eg. guitars and pedals.
Speaking personally, Facebook sanctioned me by suspending my account for a week, I think, for uploading a video of myself playing a cover of a song. Five minutes after that sanction, I deleted my Facebook account and never returned. Twitter was a similar thing (many thousands of followers), account suspended for calling out one covid denier. Resulting in me deleting Twitter. some years later I tried X and that lasted for about a month, because it is a cesspit of politicised lies - deleted. This happened because I have self discipline.
TH-cam is on very thin ice with me, for actively supporting extreme political accounts and misinformation. TH-cam is apparently incapable of effectively policing its own members within its own framework of acceptable usage and so one day, it too will be deleted without a second thought. This outcome is the only thing these massive corporations recognise.

I recently watched a video by Mr Whostheboss about that topic. One step is ensh__ification. As far as I understood, moving to several variants that are either worse or more expensive. That way, everyone pays for the personal balance between what you're willing to pay and the standards you have.
