    Thanks for the review and info, I’ve just upgraded from the Wahoo Roam v1 and waiting for the Garmin 1050 to be delivered

    Very good video, and useful feedback. I've upgraded from a Wahoo Roam v1 to a Garmin 1040 solar and am very disappointed with the screen brightness of the latter, which I have to keep at 100% luminosity all the time, making it lasting ~8h max, which is not very good esp. compared to the claimed 45h battery life. I should have upgraded to a Roam v2 to get less lag and sluggish map updates, which were my primary reasons for upgrading to the 1040 but it's not a much better performer. The legibility of the Wahoo bike computers are very good and hard to beat atm I think.

      Thank you for watching the video and for your comments. You may well know that the 45 hours claimed is completely based on the unit being used on auto brightness, so that will be the reason for you only getting eight hours. I must admit that when I first used mine on auto it didn’t feel bright enough but after several rides I didn’t really notice anymore. If you haven’t already it may be worth persevering with it to see if you get the same outcome On the other hand, eight hours is more than I got with my old unit so in your situation if I had to carry on with full brightness and had a regular charging regime, I would probably still be happy as long as I didn’t keep comparing it to the claimed 45 hours. Not a solution of course, but just might take on it. Good luck. 👍🚴

      Thanks for feedback. I have wahoo v1 and was looking at the 1040 because it the v1 was caught in a boot loop. I thought my unit was forever broken. My son figured out that long press pwr and middle button resolved boor issue. I'm back to riding the V1 and no longer seriously considering the upgrade. The wahoo has its problems but it works good enough. I'll wait for it to get lost, stolen or broken before buying something else

      @@jitterspec That's great news! I put my Roam v1 on a second bike and it still rocks compared to the not much better but much more expensive 1040 solar

      @@GravelHerault good to know. Appreciate your feedback. I do hate how v1 gets fooled if you are following a track but off 50 feet or so. For instance, riding the canals. If you are on the other side, the unit keeps giving you a warning your off course and wants you to backtrack rather than rerouting you in same direction

    I agree and have had much the same experience with the solar 1040. My biggest issue remaining is the total accent on my 1040 is on average 10% low compared to most everything else. Sometimes it’s as much as 20% lower than my friends with 1030. I can see this 1040 much better than the 830 I use to have and it has so much information it’s a unbelievable piece of equipment. Thanks for the video well done again.

    Excellent review. I've been a long-time Garmin user. This is typical Garmin. Anytime you get a new device, you're the beta tester for Garmin😢 That said, I finally think they finally made a version worth upgrading to. I am still deciding between the solar/no-solar and the newly released 540/840. The 840 seems to be mostly the same as the 1040, just not as tall. So, not as may fields on a page and less of a map visible. Also, I believe they added more buttons to the unit. This makes it nice so you're less reliant on the touch screen, like their watches. Decisions, Decisions...😮

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your nice comment. I would say that the touch screen on the 1040 is excellent and very responsive . Enjoy whichever you decide upon, the 840 should come into the equation, just a preference on screen size really 👍

      i have the 1040 and ordered the 840 and the initial plan was to sell my 1040 for the 840 as soon as it arrived but i have to say i cannot go for the small 840 anymore. the 1040 is superior in any way and does not look out of place on my bike (in terms of size) so surprisingly to myself i returned the 840 and stick with my 1040.

    Great walkthru. My own conclusion is to stay with the 830. Will give the 1050 (or whatever) a look when available. My biggest grip is the poor reviews on its ability to re-chart routes. Takes 1/8 sec for my brain to fully process - computers are seemingly not there yet. For the 830 I really, really miss a simple "rejoin" route function so I can force it to understand I'm back on track.

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi there. I didn't really cover this well enough in my video. In my experience the 1040 has successfully calculated a route to get me back on course. It will send me back the way I came IF that's the quickest way but will also give me alternative directions to get on to the original route further along it.
      I understand your frustration, it was always a problem with the 30 series but they are still great units and waiting for the 1050 is not a bad choice👍

    I never buy right away a new product or a product that evolves. I wait for this reason. Just bought the 1040 non-solar to replace my 1030. Fairly happy. The auto moving over of sensors worked ok.....only issue, the SRAM AXS dropped second ride, so seeing my gearing was gone. Had to manually enter it and it would not read to my SRAM app but then after another ride, it recognized it again......slightly buggy for sure. Also, my Assioma power meter syncing did not allow me to use my Garmin radar for some reason and the wattage output was off.....had to load the power meter in a different way which in turn allowed the Garmin radar to work and then registered power properly. Hey, these are electronic devices working on firmware.....even after two years of release, there will be bugs I am sure. What Garmin should do is if rolling out a device, give them away to so many people willing to be the test pilots. Overall, happy with the face-lift and functions so far. Great video by the way.

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike

      Thank you 😁 Yea they do have a tendency to release a bit early and correct bugs as we want users report them. I agree with your idea of having test users but I doubt they will as they are getting away with people like me doing it for them anyway !!

      Thank you and welcome , if indeed you have subscribed ! It's great to receive responses and comments so thanks again. If I was purchasing again I'd go for the slightly cheaper non solar version as I live in the UK and the benefits of extra battery life via solar isn't so great. The non solar has a slightly brighter screen, still has great battery life, but half the storage which isn't an issue for most people really.
      After the initial gremlins were ironed out, it has been a fantastic piece of kit and I don't blame you for buying it.
      The 2 videos I referenced and linked at the end are worth watching before you buy along with this later one about new enhancements to the Climb Pro feature which I love - Good Luck 👍

    I have a Wahoo Roam and I'm thinking of upgrading to either a Roam v2 or a 1040. Once thing that keep pulling me to Wahoo is the nice non reflective screen. No backlight is needed during the day and it's always clear even in full tropical sun. Have you ever tried a Wahoo unit and how do you like the screen so far on the 1040?

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've never used Wahoo so can't really compare. the screen on the 1040 solar is good enough for me but the non solar version has a brighter screen because it isn't covered with a solar panel and I'd go for that if I was purchasing now 👍

    Hi, great video. I currently have the edge 1030. And considering upgrading to the non solar 1040. My main issue with the 1030 is that unlike my previous 520, it doesn't have the audible beep tones at the start of a strava segment, or when I reach my 10 mile laps etc. Does the 1040 have the audible beep tones that I miss? Many thanks

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You won't regret the upgrade I'm sure and yes as long as you have marked a Strava segment as a favourite, the unit will beep to let you know and you can choose whether or not to have the details on your screen during the segment . I'm pretty sure though that the 1030 should beep too👍

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess it depends what you use it for, the faster processor and multi band GPS are huge improvements and it seems Garmin may be going down the same route as Apple by bringing out new features ONLY on latest models , the new “ Free Ride Climbpro” for example is excellent in my opinion but only available on 40 series units . There’s a video all about that feature on my channel. So it really depends what you want as the 1030 is still a great head unit. You would of course recoup some of the 1040 cost with the 1030 second hand value in a sale 👍

    1040 non solar with all the maps already loaded, North America and Europe (I live in Canada but travel by bike twice a year throughout Europe.) So with all the maps (including the Climbpro maps) the memory is full. If I would have known that ahead of time I would have bough the solar version just for that.

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's definitely a consideration which most people wouldn't need to make but you are a classic case. I assume you can temporarily remove maps depending on where you are but that would be a real ball ache

    • @rejenvelo9075
      @rejenvelo9075 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest problem is that to remove maps (i.e. Manage maps / change region) you must have all your maps up to date. Otherwise you can't, the option to manage maos is not there. You cannot upgrade maps if your memory is full. Lots if fun...

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว

      It kind of makes me think Garmin were not confident people would upgrade to Solar purely because of the Solar feature. Makes no sense to manufacture almost identical units with half the memory

    Hi just watched your section on Climbpro and I see your screen shot has the 'Dist to go' and 'Asc remain' fields at the top. • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there - it's all good news. The climbpro screen you saw on this video is the one you will see on your own unit IF you load and follow a fixed route on your ride. It will have Distance to go and Ascent remaining because, having committed to a loaded route the unit knows that information. I'm guessing you've been riding without loading a route which is the subject of the video I'll link at the end of my message covering a fantastic new feature brought out since I made the video you watched which gives climbpro info on a free ride. It estimates where you are LIKELY to ride so doesn't report those 2 pieces of information as it doesn't know for sure as you may turn off the climb with their being no predetermined route. I'm pretty sure that explains it, take a look at this video for the full explanation - All the best and happy cycling

    I got the solar version just for the benefit of it having more storage, although it is a benefit getting some extra charge
    I upgraded my Vivoactive 4 to the Forerunner 955 but I didn't bother with the solar version for that as I'm indoors most days and my watch isn't exposed to the sun a lot so wouldn't really gain much charge. Also as it's a smaller screen to my Edge, it has a far smaller solar panel, so would get less exposure

      Hi and thanks for watching my video 👍 I upgraded from the 1030 and this was one of the many big improvements. The responsiveness of the screen is excellent and swiping between screens is no problem at all when i ride in the winter with quite thick gloves. Selecting a specific thing with my fingertip is not so immediate but thats more to do with the fact that to get gloves that go over my hand the fingers are always too long so the area of my fingertip is "squidgy" and it would be a problem regardless of which model I use if that makes sense. As long as your gloves fit your fingers better than anything I can get you'll be fine with that too 👍
