When I was about 7, so 1968, my nonna crocheted a baby blue bed jacket for me to wear in hospital when I had my tonsils out. It got alot of attention from the nurses and felt so special to wear. Loved the fashion parade.

The last 1960s short nightie was called a baby doll nightie, or sometimes a "shortie". Children and teens used to wear them but they became the choice of the woman in their 20s to be "sexier".
My mum had so many nighties from the 40s and 50s. I believe she never really wanted to live in any other time, the time of her youth. In Queensland, where we lived, the nylon bed jackets were only for hospital and cotton ones were for home as nylon too hot. Women went to hospital for up to 2 weeks when having a baby so it was important to "look your best". She had a deep emerald green chenille winter dressing gown, real Hollywood style, that had a train. It was her special gown and I remember it when I was very little. I fell in love with that dressing gown. I've still never seen anything so elegant.

When you wash your nightgowns and hang them to dry, put a covered paper clip over the bow to keep the bow in good condition and flatter until it's at least halfway dry.

I was born in 1958. My mother had a beautiful collection of the sets like you modeled 2 of. They called them negligees. When I was around 10, and my parents would watch Lawrence Welk on television, she kindly allowed me to dress up in various ones and dance around the room in them. I felt so glamorous. Such fond memories. 💜

I love all the styles but some of them brought wonderful memories as l grew up in the fifties. That sewing technique is called smocking and it was very popular in the fifties. I had a couple of bed jackets too. One was blue quilted satin. And l also had some baby doll (shortie) pajamas. These night gowns were particularly charming because they are so detailed.

What a fun video of your vintage nightgown collection. It made me remember all the nighty sets my mother had in the 70's when I was a little girl. She passed away in 79 and I have no idea what ever happened to them all, but I remember loving to look at them and even dress up in them :) I am more of a pajama bottom and T-shirt girl for bed. I'd freeze in the lovely nighties and they'd end up around my neck by morning! LOL!!! Thank you Sage for the fond memories :)

I had to laugh about you saying that your nightgown ends up on around your neck by the morning. Never more truer words spoken. I wear the cotton night dresses and they always end up wadded in the small of my back.

The little two piece outfit at the end is called a baby doll. My older sisters used to wear these in the 70's, very cute. They were very fashionable in the UK and came in lots of colours and styles. Mostly in nylon and probably from the late 60's onwards. I remember my sister had a red one and a purple and black print, very feminine and they were given them as gifts for Christmas

Hello Darling! This was another video that made me smile! The 2nd nightie with the intricate detail on the bodice, I believe it looks like “smocking”. Little girl’s dresses in the 50’s often had it on their bodice, usually all the way across. My Mother had a bed jacket and I remember how glamorous I thought it was 😊 Your vintage collection is glamorous and you look simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing and thanks so much for all your work (which looks fun).

I remember my mother having beautiful gowns and sets, and my sister and I had some really pretty gowns, too. But, I believe in the seventies, there were several fire related accidents and injuries caused by the melting nylon. Safety legislation changed, and nightclothes had to be flame retardent, and gradually, all these pretty wafty gowns vanished, and simple cotton took over.

    • @SageLilleyman

I remember my mom buying both of us matching night gowns. If the department store didn't have any for mother and daughter matching sets, she'd make us a few. She had one "special" floor-length night gown that was mid four arm sleve, black with a hip length slit on both sides. She did however kept the night gowns she'd warn from her childhood (1951 until she and my dad married 1964). Some were still in good condition to pass to me. The others became a quilt she made me adding in a few of the scrap material from my own night gowns as I outgrew them. My favorite ones are the full-length flannel ones. I was somewhat spoiled growing up as I was the only daughter with two brothers 6 and 4 years older.

These are adorable! I have a few vintage nighties that I got from thrift stores - not sure if they fit me anymore, but I've kept them.

❤ the 60's one! I had a baby doll one when I was little. Instead of bikini bottoms, they were cute bloomers.

You are beyond beautiful! You are the perfect 50's woman in these negligees. They are so pretty too. What a lost era. Nothing like today 's fashion if you want to call it that. I am inspired to see what hidden gems may be found in our Thrift stores. Thank you for sharing. You are just lovely.🌹

Oh yes! Pretty hospital bed jacket when you feel like death warmed over, LOL. The second nighty, second bed jacket!💓💓. I had a pale turquoise pair of those slippers but lost them in storage. Now I’m too old to wear all my 50,s clothes ☹️

That cute pattern on the nightgown at 2:57 is called smocking. Very cute nighties… I’m looking for a vintage nightie/slip sewing pattern, and these have given me many ideas. Thank you!

What fun things you have. The embroidery you didn’t know the name of is smocking. Or the nightgown has been smocked. There isn’t much smocking around these days but it is very beautiful. They used to use it a lot on young children’s clothing.

Hello, I love bed jackets. My mother had a pretty pink quilted bed jacket for the hospital stay when having my youngest sister in 1968. ****Plus there is a hilarious episode of The Andy Griffith show where Aunt Bea is dying to a have a bed jacket she sees in a shop window. I highly recommend watching it! ***I received a bed jacket this year to wear while having for a minor surgery. Really makes you feel good to wear one because they are so pretty and practical. Thank you for your videos I am really enjoying them.

I’m on the lookout for an Olga nightgown, around 70’s/80’s. It’s difficult to find proper nightclothes and dressing gowns these days. Women just don’t wear them anymore. Shadowline still makes a pretty peig noir set. Thanks for sharing!

The dressing gown made me smile. My Nanna Marjorie had a giant closet full of velvet dressing gowns. Every time we would stay at her house we would parade around in them like the Queen!
