Great playing as always Steve . I have a 61 slingerland same color and sizes. I love it. My toms I pull down lower than this tune for more boom and sustain. Great kit. 13 & 16 rule. Huge tuning options !

From Keith Jones Christian drummer Bude Cornwall. Own one of these odd-sized kits. Always a good punchy sound on the 20" bass drum and good top quality sound on the toms. In the l970's when on the same bill as Genesis, Phil Collins used the same size drums. This was with my UK group Flying Fortress.

Hey great playing. Nice to hear some demos with jazz grooves, good touch and technique to show off the tone of the drums.
I had a question. I saw that charlie watts plays a "1957 round badge" kit. I was wondering what is the difference between "round badge" kits and the broadkasters that are now being reissued? Thanks.

usablefiber Great question. Charlie's '57 kit would've been very similar to todays Broadkasters in terms of specs. Three-ply maple/poplar shells, reverse roundover bearing edges (the only difference here is that on the new Broadkasters the kick drums also have this feature. Original always kits had the standard edge). Of course, the hardware has been updated a lot since then, but you can get the new kits with a very close vintage hardware tribute configuration.
The original round badge era extended into the late '60s, and in the very late '50s the shell composition changed from three-ply to six-ply, a formula that remains to today. In the early aughts, Gretch's long-time shell supplier, Jasper, went out of business, and since then they've been using Keller shells (with the same proprietary formula), so that is another difference between modern Broadkasters and 3-ply round badge kits.
      Hope this is illuminating!

Why are older kits better than newer kits? Aside from being a collectible, does the sound improve over time? Is it the wood aging? I hear newer kits that sound amazing and I've heard older kits that were eh..

curious if the Gretsch heads are equivalent to ambassadors top and bottom?
