Thank you so much for positing these videos. You're content is really helpful Justin. I have been trying to change my study methods but it's been difficult since I got used to writing notes and unless I do that I don't have confidence that I know stuff. Been trying to implement new things tho.
Yeah, you have to trust the process. I think he addressed that in one of his latest vids saying with deep processing it's like filling a bath tub. Tho it doesn't feel like it you learn a lot more than by just superficially understanding everything

Thanks for the great video, I found it helpful, could you talk more about how to study, apply and master chemistry? Especially how to remember all those organic chemistry structures and names
Actually I have been having the same issue. Just wanting to get through a coding course as quickly as possible, for example.. not because of being passive, but because you just want to understand everything. But I then I feel my brain gets overloaded and I have to stop, then I feel it takes me forever to recover, so usually what happens is that I cannot continue until next day. So my take from this is to just watch a small portion, maybe like an hour, then take time to mind map, create relationships, find what's relevant, choose what to try to encode and what to leave out, etc, then start practicing retrieval.. this process would take perhaps 1-2 hours -> and hopefully the brain would not feel as overloaded, so that you can study something else later in the day.. there are too many variables involved.. I'm thinking of joining the program, but I wonder how much of a difference it would make.. in the meantime these videos help you start thinking about the problems..
What i think he meant was:
Lets say you are learning to create a frontend webpage
-> in stead of watching a course which teaches html -> css -> js ->react => create a website
-> its better to
- use html css, to create one project. mix those things up
- use html , css, JS to create another small project.
- use only react to create another small project
- create a simple 1 component project with html css js react
- FINALLY, make webpage you are aiming to create. By doing such you are making sure, you both understand each concept and also are able to combine things and create small project and move on to big ones

Hi Justin, you should give Excalidraw a try. This is a drawing tool I think being the most similar to the hand-written
You can create pdfs of hand written note and add to obsidian if thisnelps

Thanks Justin :) Would you say a low % theory to practice ratio is basically the definition of a technique that is mostly based upon procedural knowledge?
I have a question, how do one get the key words from a topic that have subtopics, should I move from subtopic to subtopic (pick the words from one subtopic know how it fits to the bigger picture and then go to another subtopic) like the way the material is presented to me or i should have a mixture way of picking the key words (random from different subtopics; mixed words from different subtopic)? Please help
17:47 you can do that in obsidian with colors and linking is flexible and a bonus of obsidian canvas (mind map) is that it's easy to rearrange and see what is the optimal placement for your different points. One thing that I find important in note taking is how the work looks like in the end. I cannot study from ugly notes. That's why perhaps writing notes by hand could lead to better results, because you take them in your own style exactly in a way you find beautiful. It is your own beautiful creation and your brain puts importance to it, which acts as an anchor point.
I think obsidian is not ugly and could achieve the same effect as writing notes by hand.
Obsidian canvas is great but you still don't get the same mind-body connection that you do from pen and paper, or writing on a canvas with a tablet. A good thing about Obsidian specifically is that it's easy to rearrange things in your mindmap if your thinking about the topic evolves over time.
i thought in excalidraw + tags, its seems pretty, but i dont know.. what do you think guys? for now im using concepts, but it still have folders..
Doing it with colours is one of the lesser effective ways to show a relationship, unfortunately, and rearranging relationships isnt just a matter of moving things around to make it prettier
@@rthumd I'm using concepts for studying high-level, then export image to Obsidian, link it with tags or whatever linking tools. For topics that highly procedure focused, I draw in Excalidraw because these topic are often easier
Could practicing immediately after also be recommended for learning new concepts?
For example in physics, let’s say you learned kinetic and potential energy, would you practice it as soon as possible? Then move on to the next concept?
Practicing it with say a practice problem would be another way of encoding the new information. Often the only practical way of understanding a concept is to practice it enough.
You can also put practice problems in an Anki deck if you want to. But I'd say it's more situational. I'd only do that for problems that I want to 100% remember the solution to. It wouldn't necessarily help your understanding to do the same problem again and again.
Are you talking about techniques as in a procedural skill. Or does this also apply to learning new concepts and using them?

Dr sung, can you talk about how should we use a textbook in the learning process?
I think that this is a fundemantal thing in learning, and it is a big problem for me, actually I don't find reading a text effective at all, I speak about my experience not from a theoretical point of view, is it just a "for me" thing or it is really not the best way to learn?!
Texts are "linear" that's my problem, I like to have someone draw lines in front of me in the explanations

can interleaving be technically considered as spaced repetition just like little advanced?
Those are two different "techniques" or rather concepts of learning. Spacing is the revision before the learned info is forgotten which is in intervals of a day then a week and then a month and then before the assessment. Interleaving is the learning or relearning of the same info with a different technique e. G. Mindmaps or teaching in order to get a deeper understanding
Thoughts while watching:
- Theory practice balance - knowledge off V knowledge about
- Techniques - how do you know what is effective?
- What is a technique in this discussion? seems very broad
- Proper challenge - how do you know what that is?
- I like the idea of using 'fundamentals' in practice - representative practice
- Zettlekasten is just a collection of notes - the practice would differ I am curious to hear mre.
- Digital tools not optimized - not sure about that
- no barrier to linking - disagree
- organize in the brain - we do that in both analogue and digital
- representation free hand better I agree
- Second brain management - it is a concept about multiple tools not a single tool
