Diet and exercise: having a healthy lifestyle can help with cognitive performance, but it has a limit in how helpful it is.
Limiting visual distractions: avoiding things that can catch the eye and break the focus, such as having a nice view or wearing a hat with a hoodie.
Task timing: scheduling tasks and events during the day when one is more focused and effective for that task, such as doing deep work in the mornings and menial work in the evenings.
Crafting a focus zone: creating a clear and uncluttered workplace that is separate from where one sleeps or relaxes, and changing the environment if needed.
Attention span: training the ability to stay on task for longer periods of time, such as by doing mindfulness meditation or other breathing techniques.
Rest timing: taking frequent shorter breaks to keep the focus and energy levels topped up, rather than depleting oneself to exhaustion, such as by using the Pomodoro technique or a rule of thumb.
Creating auditory focus: blocking out distracting sounds and creating an auditory focus zone, such as by using noise cancelling headphones or earphones, and a white noise app that can match the type of distraction and the mood.
Controlling interruptions: preventing or minimizing interruptions from other people or devices, such as by putting the phone on do not disturb mode, telling the potential interrupters that one is working, putting a sign up, or moving to another location.
Honorable mention 1: task process: using a method of learning and studying that is engaging the right cognitive processes and helps to enter into a flow state, rather than a boring or ineffective method.
Honorable mention 2: sleep: getting enough and quality sleep to improve health, memory, learning, and cognitive performance, and having a good sleep hygiene and wind down night time routine.

Additional tip for ADHDers - communicating boundaries for when you don't want to be disturbed is *essential*. Advocate for yourself by having those conversations with your boss/colleagues/family/roommates and continue to reinforce them (respectfully, and take into account urgent needs if you are disturbed).
Smell is another factor as part of building a "focus environment". I use an essential oil diffuser in my office at home and at work. The aromatherapy effects may only be placebo, but it's the habit and ritual of "setting up something that smells good" before I start working that helps to switch my brain into a focus state. Plus when you take a break and go back in the room it smells fantastic and triggers your brain to get back to flow again (it does for me at least)
This video is so reassuring - I do all of these as a non-negotiable part of my ADHD management now, but it's taken time to implement them gradually. Good luck everyone!

    - Focus involves many factors - control the "dials" based on the situation
    - Least important: diet, exercise, visual distractions, task timing
    - More important: focus zone, training attention span, timed breaks, auditory control
    - Most important: controlling interruptions, sleep, effective task process
    - Control interruptions with do not disturb, communicating with others, moving locations
    - Good sleep and engaging task process make focus easier
    - Be adaptable and optimize factors for each situation
    - Take a layered approach adjusting multiple factors
    - Knowledge, experimentation and practice make focus a habit

    Flow zone
Focus not dependent on effort. Focus dependent on multiple complex factors, thus can vary day to day. Learn what factors affect your focus so you know what factors to modulate.
The following 8 factors are crucial for Justin (may differ for you) in increasing rank/priority.
    8) 04:18 Diet/exercise - have generally balanced/healthy diet and regular exercise
    7) 04:57 Limit visual distractions - adjust your external view
    6) 05:48 Task timing - for him, concentration work in mornings and menial tasks in afternoon/evenings, but experiment for yourself
    5) 06:34 Craft a focus zone - uncluttered work zone away from where you sleep/relax. Go external (ex: library) if needed. Cue/condition your focus.
    4) 08:10 Attention span - current short-form media works against longer attention spans so we need to train this (like exercise to train muscles). Mindfulness medication (ex: Calm) forces your mind to be distracted but you have to refocus it. 15-20 min daily
    3) 10:13 Rest timing - rest when flow is decreasing, mind is more easily distracted, or you’re restless. Break time rule of thumb = total focus time / 4. Time your breaks and do something restful/reenergizes you (ex: meditation, Wim Hof breathing). Don’t get into a game or TV series that will take up longer than the allotted break time.
    2) 12:05 Create auditory focus zone (ex: noise cancelling headphones, white noise). Use white noise similar to your environment sounds and mood.
    1) 14:34 Control your interruptions (ex: people around you, phone/digital) - app blockers, put away phone, put up sign, tell person, move to new location. If all of those are tried but interruptions can’t be controlled, then use that time to prep for focus time and focus another time/place.

Adjust Focus as Needed: Recognize which elements affect your ability to concentrate and tweak them based on the day's demands.
Designate a Work Zone: Set up a specific area for work to minimize distractions, use noise-blocking devices, and inform others not to disturb you.
Stay Active and Rested: Exercise and eat well to keep your brain sharp. Break your work into chunks with short breaks in between to avoid burnout.
Prepare Beforehand: Get all your materials ready before starting work, so you can dive straight in without delay.
Stick to Sleep Routines: Ensure you get enough sleep every night to maintain your focus and energy during the day.

Currently going through your tips and noting down which ones I can & can't apply, and it's frustrating me xD
8 - Exercise, of those I can do when I can, I love bicycling, hiking, kayaking, skiing, blacksmithing, and might get into martial arts and parkour for added fitness & basic-level skills.
7 - Limiting visual distractions, I don't have many decorations, and the ones I have are mostly plain. So I'm not sure what is optimal for me here - more color or less. I'll have to play with this one.
6 - Timing, well I can do it before work or after work. Sometimes I can focus during work - namely lunches.
5 - Focus Zone, I can only do so much with my one room, desk, bed, and one window. Going elsewhere isn't optimal due to severe reduction in available resources, too.
4 - Attention Span, yeah I've got a great starting attention span. Will have to experiment with mindful meditation.
3 - Breaks, I have no idea when to take a break, sometimes I wonder if I've been operating past my limits without proper rest for a while, haha! Having options is good, but I'll limit myself to a breathing technique that serves dual-purpose.
2 - This is one I've been needing to figure out. I started to realize its power, but I didn't quite figure out how to nail it down yet.

My experience is the type of resting and the resting duration are both important. For short resting like Pomodoro, I keep very low dolpamine stimulation, like resting mind in blank by meditation, or tidying up things without stimulating the brain; watching social media or playing games are strictly prohibited. It can help me get back to flow state shortly with less struggling. High dolpamine stimulation rest only happends weekly or longer, also under a monitored duration not more that 3 hours. With regular physical exercise, the learning becomes more focused by boring rest method.

19:00 This doesn't help much for ADHD. It's hit or miss, but listening to music can be better. Only music you know very well in a familiar order (a full album). The music won't distract you that much if you know everything about it already, and it's better than white noise because your ADHD brain can focus more when you are mixing something you need to focus with something that could require focus but is automatic for you. This is also why playing games can help you focus on listening and learning through listening (when it's a topic that doesn't require notes, not so much for new things that require encoding from scratch.
This may sound like multitasking but it isn't it's simultaneously doing two tasks, and one of them is like a placeholder to help you focus on the main task. People with ADHD often think they can multitask well, and it's often a misplaced impression. Switching from one task to the next is easy -too easy- for those with ADHD.

8:30 I am really lucky. With undiagnosed ADHD for years, I could have been a victim of the short format social media pushes. Luckily, I got good influences on certain areas, so I always disliked short format on almost anything. Starting with music, I am the type who loves 10 minute songs. I also love RPGs and good, deep storytelling.
This also had a bad side, it took me a long time to understand it's not efficient to force myself to go through everything in one sitting. I guess that's something the ADHD is to blame, since I knew I wouldn't finish things by trying to break them down. Things are so much better with Vyvanse, it's scary.

My current style of studying is while at work I start watching video tutorials and taking notes sometimes do some labs that I can follow (IT industry learning cloud). And then on my rest day my goal is to lab again and start doing projects, or practice exam. My problem is that I'm having a problem doing the latter part (projects and practice exam) because I'm always thinking that I may have a feature or tool that I still didn't know from the video tutorials... Should I just block a time for a complete learning and not do it while working or any adjustments that I could do? Thank you

    • @jasondads9509

Previously one of those guys mentioned those tools are too slow, better to draw by hand

    • @siggy1277
      @siggy1277 ปีที่แล้ว

Mind mapping tools like Lucidchart indeed have their merits. Ituri providing a visual way to outline and untangle complex thoughts or project plans, such instruments can be incredibly helpful, particularly for individuals who think creatively or are visual learners. Nevertheless, like all methods, it may not be ideal for everyone. For deeper information processing, nothing can substitute tangible learning or scribbling notes manually on a paper. The vital facet with any of these forms is to comprehend its efficacy over time on a personal level and follow an approach that boosts productivity, enhances knowledge retention, and upholds a balance of comprehensive methods.

Question: I personally am tired all throughout the day and can't focus on anything at all and whenever I try to solve problems(mechanical engineering major) I just get headaches. But once it's late enough I suddenly can solve the same problems without effort and everything suddenly seems easy and seamless. Got any insight on why that could be, or is my sleep schedule just messed up? I really want to center my day around getting the important and intensive work done at night, problem is I have exams in the morning so I still have to get focus in the morning...

I'm surprised you put "white noise" in auditory focus. Have you tried industrial ear protection on top of ear plugs? Might make you look silly but to me it's worth it because it works so much better than white noise for me.
    Advantages:
    -complete silence,
-a unique studious identity (identity: how you see yourself; could have actually been number 1 on this list.)
-people are less likely to interrupt you wearing hearing protection compared to headphones
-white noise keeps the auditory part of your brain firing (?)
-putting on the haring protection is a cue for focus, headphones are a cue for fun.
    Disadvantages:
    -might not hear fire alarm
    -look a bit silly
