    Stringer: Alright I'll give you 10,000 but I want receipts on everything, that shit's tax deductible
    Prop Joe: I'll give you 15,000 now, but I want 15% of every boxer's future earnings

      think what Avon got with being cool about cutty failing a mission and handing out 15k in this scene.
      I think it's a pretty good investment for Avon. Imagine cutty's influence among kids growing up in corners if he keep training those kids.

    • @stellarhyme3
      @stellarhyme3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      + Tong Gorokh What's your point? If there's a market it for it sell it. It's not like they're forcing people to take drugs, people chose to. It's funny how alcohol and tobacco is just as bad, causes just as much damage to society, but because its legal people have no issue with corporations that sell that crap to the public, nor do they have an issue with the people who work for those companies. The same goes for prescription medication and all the side effects, deaths and addictions that they cause. If its a market it for it, sell it. Drugs are only illegal because the government hasn't figured out a way to get their cut.

    • @Ensostyle
      @Ensostyle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      government already figured out how to get cut it called prescription medication as you mention and tabaco and alcohol taxes, but heavy drug illegal because they do lethal effect on people more faster then alcohol and tabaco and it more addicted, so when you telling people choose do drugs, well they not choose, they addicted to take it and will do anything to get it, what used by drug dealers to get short dollar. Basicly Avon hypocrite.

    • @stellarhyme3
      @stellarhyme3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Tong Gorokh Drugs are illegal not because of how fast of an effect they have on people. Alcohol has a much faster effect on people than drugs. Just go to your local bar, you'll see fist fights, guns pulled all kinds of nonsense. Or just look at the domestic violence incidences and drunk driving accidents that cost lives each and every night. They wash over this because the alcohol industry has a powerful lobby in Washington. Don't for a moment think the government has your best interest in mind. They don't. Drugs are illegal because the government can't control the distribution. They don't control the people who make the most in third world nations from growing the plants. It's hard to tax weed when someone can grow it on their window seal. The distribution of cocaine is controlled by south Americans and African Americans, if they were to legalize the stuff, these third class citizens would have a instant monopoly over everyone else. They can't have that, the power structure would be turned on its head. It's easier to keep certain drugs illegal, and vilify certain groups of people for offering the public the same crap that alcohol, prescription drugs and tobacco industry does, than it would be to legalize and instantly change the power structure with in a nation.
      I spent years in Europe and they have legalized drug use in some countries and it works. Those who want to use can use and those that don't, won't do so. I don't buy into the bull shit. Alcohol is way worse than other drugs, prohibition didn't get passed for no reason. Women were tired of getting their asses beat by their husbands, towns were tired of drunken gun fights etc. There is an immediate effect when people drink. Mothers against drunk drivers was started because of alcohol. Weed has way more health benefits than negatives but they won't let the truth out because the government has classified falsely as a harmful drug, while they ignore prescription drugs that are similar in power and addictive capabilities as cocaine and heroin. With the Government, money talks, the truth walks.

    • @Ensostyle
      @Ensostyle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      they legalized canabis not cocain ^) i totaly agree with you about prescription drugs and yes goverment can make cocain prescription drug, actually it was already and it was for kids ^)

Back when the Seattle SuperSonics existed, I had a friend who worked a restaurant frequented by the players. He talked about how Kevin Durant tipped ok and Jeff Green tipped really poorly (they were rookies that year), but the older players always tipped really, really well.

      It’s been hinted at a few times that Avon does indeed think about a life outside of the game, mostly whenever he’s talking to Cutty. He was stunned when Cutty decided to leave the game. Like watching someone like Bubbles who was an addict for 90% of the show finally get clean, it’s something you wouldn’t expect. Deep down, Avon knew he would eventually become Cutty: An OG who has done his
      time and leads a quiet and normal life which he secretly wants it, but he isn’t sure how to deal with it, hence why he said,” But you ain’t done shit else.” He wanted genuinely wanted to know how someone could leave the game.

      Mainly because Avon is shown a "mostly dumb and egotistical" in the first season, while Stringer is posed as the "calm and composed one" leaving us to believe that Stringer shouldve been the boss. But first season IS the breaking point for barksdale org, up until now they were unreachable.
      Avon is the guy you want as a leader when the org is growing : full of energy, of respect and knowing when to hit and when to hide. While Stringer is the guy you need in peace time, towering his subject and acting safekeeper. It's only after S2 that you see stringer becoming manipulative against Avon : when the org was in full power, both their agenda were sustainable (Corners were held AND Stringer was legitimizing already) at the same time, but after that there was a conflict over the direction to take because funds were limited and they had pressure from the cops.
      Avon post S1 is shown as having his priorities set straight (he needs corners to have money to give to his friends) while stringer is becoming a BBEG seeing only his interests. sure they both turn against each other (during the reminescing conversation) but ultimately neither would have done so if they could return to power (they would just keep in touch from distant worlds).
      but Stringer fail to integrate in the proper society and Avon is shut down before he could rise again.

    One of the many great things about Cutty's 3rd Season story line is how much it humanized Avon Barksdale.

      JimmySteller well I think that was one of the (many) messages and ideas of the show. Few people are that "black and white" when it comes to their personalities, character, motivations etc.
      It brings to mind a conversation I had years ago with my father, where I tried (and failed) to get him to see that a good friend of mine who was dealing hard drugs was still a decent guy. Not too many people are simply "good" or "evil", we all have lots of different sides. And shit, once you truly understand somebody's motivations for their behavior, nobody is that two-dimensional.

    Like others have pointed out. Cutty went to churches and the so called “good” people of the community and got nothing. While Avon a gang banger and drug dealer immediately gave more then was asked and was happy to do it.

  • @Guitarsoul24734

    Subtle thing The Wire director's always do: any scene Slim Charles is in, it always cuts to him 2-3 times for a reaction shot. It breathes life into the scene and fleshes him out; he's always thoughtful, loyal, but thinking things over. Brilliant how they use him to add small texture and flavor.

    This scene shows the difference between people like Slim and Avon, and people like Marlo. It sounds fucking insane to say that murderers like Avon, Slim or Wee-Bey had any love in their hearts, but when given a chance (like here) they really did. As Paris said about wannabe gangsters who think their violence makes them respectable, "Ain't no love in them cold-hearted stares." Avon's crew killed citizens (in EPISODE ONE), but they were still so much better than Marlo's crew.

    • @colonelhart5721
      @colonelhart5721 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mkc N No I don't, I think Obama is a war criminal and would be charged with war crimes if international law wasn't just a hypocritical evil charade. My point was just that there are still varying degrees of evil, but I totally agree with you that the US government has no right to condemn gangsters (or drug dealers lol) as they are one and the same.

    • @rokaine7334

      Avon might have seemed like he was heartless but he really wasn't. If you look at it, every body (showed in the story) that was dropped by Barksdale Crew, was in the name of business to the game. Marlo on the other hand, killed for whatever sick reason he wanted showing no kind of remorse nor empathy towards human kind.

    • @scipio2009
      @scipio2009 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marlo and Avon were at to completely different points in their lives, so of course they'd act differently.
      Time is unknown, but Avon/Stringer had already taken over the Towers, the low rises, and seemingly all the territory worth having in West Baltimore before the show even started. Marlo was basically a corner boy who grew his operation into a nice little crew when he was introduced.
      Once Marlo got the crown, and if Chris was able to get out of jail and want to try something else, Marlo would show him that love and let him be on his way

    Damn, Cutty looks legit hurt/heartbroken when Avon and Slim start laughing. They're his last hope and he thinks he's being mocked for asking so much, but in reality it's the opposite. Cutty has their respect, they know he means well for the kids, so him being meek and humble wasn't necessary. He could've walked in and said, "Hey I want to build a gym for the kids so they stay off the streets, I need 25". Slim and Avon would've just nodded and said, "aight".

    Yo yo yo. You guys got to appreciate the Cutty acting skills man. I really think he’s under appreciated as an actor. Focus on his subtle facial expressions which fell so damn much and are so believable. Here, when Avon say about the 15k and when he asks Bodie about his brother James and Bodie tells him he been dead.

    • @thebillbo
      @thebillbo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Again what you say makes sense but I reckon the fact that Cutty was trying to find a job/purpose in his life after getting out of the game whilst being enthusiastic about a boxing gym was a big part of why Avon gave him the cash.
      He didn't want his name on the wall as he didn't want to highlight to the police where his money was going.

    This scene is so powerful in a way. Cutty tries his very best, to follow the system, the very same system that incarcerated him. He wants to do well, so he tries to do everything by the book, only to be let down by system. He sees that everything doesn’t come easy, and that it all comes down to one thing; money. The same reason he was sent to jail for. He was close to falling off the deep end when he went to do work for Avon, but didn’t want to go down that rabbit hole. So he gets an actual job. He finds comfort and meaning to his job. And tip of that, he tries his best to look out for the kids, whom remind him of his younger self. And much like boxing, he was desperate for help and on the ropes, and with his one last punch, he asks Avon for a hand. And Avon, with a slight giggle and hand gesture, gives Cutty more than what Cutty asked for. Money that comes with a price, that price being the very same lifestyle that affected Cutty and the very kids Cutty is trying to help.
