- Alice Walker narrates her personal journey to Zora Neale Hurston through a childhood and education that was devoid of the presence of black women writers.
Excerpt from the lecture, "Finding a World that I Thought Was Lost: Zora Neale Hurston and the People She Looked at Very Hard and Loved Very Much." Delivered on October 3, 2003 at "Jumpin' at the Sun: Reassessing the Life and Work of Zora Neale Hurston," the Virginia C. Gildersleeve Conference at Barnard College, NYC.

Thank you to Alice Walker. She paid for the marker on Zora’s gravesite. A fraternity later paid for a gateway Marker in the graveyard that recognizes Zora’s accomplishments. I will visit again and place flowers on Zora’s grave.
This is to banish all the academic air. {{shaking the gourd rattle}} - Alice Walker
