Confession: this film was the very first Disney film to make me cry. No matter how many times I’ve watched Mufasa’s death scene, I’m still reduced to tears. You were looking at the GREATEST father in cinema. Ironically, voiced by the same person that voiced the WORST father in cinema history. Darth Vader.
My crying moment was, believe it or not, Toy Story when (while imprisoned in Sid's room) Buzz was depressed over the realization that he was a toy and Woody became self depreciating after pointing out to Buzz the wonderful features he brings to Andy while at the same time thinking that he's outdated and not a toy worth playing with.
Hans Zimmer (who also did the soundtrack for movies like The Last Samurai, Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Dark Knight trilogy & more) originally didn't want to do the Lion King soundtrack since it was an animation about animals, until he learned that it's about a boy who loses his father at a young age. Zimmer also lost his father when he was young so he tried to write the music accompanying Mufassa's death to reflect how he felt when his father died and as a kind of requiem for his own father. That's why it's impossible to not cry.
I can definitely see why Hans Zimmer didn’t want to do with the score part during Mufasa’s death scene because I remember watching him talk about it during behind the scenes of the lion king and I feel really bad that he doesn’t have his dad anymore. He probably goes to visit his grave either on his birthday, Father’s Day or death anniversary but still his score in the lion king is the best yet my dad told me that the lion king what is Hans Zimmer’s first score that he did because it was for his daughter and I can see why.

It is amazing just how well The Lion King still stands up after DECADES of watching it. Ironically, watching it as a kid compared to being an adult still resonates on the same level as far as emotional impact on specific scenes or characters. It is, by definition, "timeless" in so many ways.

Being strong as a male doesn't mean all the time or to throw your ego around 24/7, there are times and places when you have to be there. That's Mufasa. Be there when it counts. That's a Lion.
True lions observe the lands as the lionesses prowl, lounging patiently with the playing cubs but come nightfall they hunt big game using all their knowledge and power. Otherwise they act in daylight only to patrol or protect.
It never means that. De Waal's work already proves that this is the case with chimps, not just humans (though it's not as true with lions, but that's Jungian symbolism for you). The alpha male is always the strongest and the wisest and the most compassionate, all at the same time (or at least, enough when he needs to be to the females, other males, and his own family, and to be open to new information, as noted by the bird/'King's eye' in this one, which Scar is unhappy about). In this way, I think the modern world has a very corrupt, anti-reality view of males, since it's always framed in the context of 'ego' and in the negative, which is just nonsense. This shows zero literally of biology, and it means you understand humans even less than chimps understand (both men and women fail to understand humans all the time). @@TheClassicWorld Just because that's what a 'strong' male is or should be doesn't mean there aren't males out there that misunderstand what it means to be strong and do things they feel would show that yet only show how insecure they are. And even so-called 'alpha' males in the positive sense know that being strong doesn't mean not being vulnerable. That was something Mufasa talked about with Simba after saving him from the hyenas. What he did was brave and required a lot of mental strength, but it didn't mean that he wasn't without fear. He was afraid when Simba wandered off into a dangerous territory (something he was 'strong' enough to admit to his son) but because he had a duty to protect his son if he ever got into trouble, it drove him to do something in spite of the fear. Most importantly, he didn't do it to try to prove to anyone _else_ how 'strong' he was. And even with all that, strong males also know that there are times when they may not feel as strong and are 'strong' enough to recognize when they need help and support and aren't afraid to ask for it.

It's a film that deserves all of the attention and recognition it needs for it's quality and overall message of overcoming the barriers that prevent a person from discovering who they really are.

At baseball games here in San Francisco, we have a “Lion King Cam”, where parents hold their babies up like Rafiki holding Simba, and they show them on the big screen. 🦁
Really? I'm going to have to move there when I have my first kid, this is tied for my favorite film of all time(with Silence of The Lambs ik that's a wierd combo) I know every single line it never gets old to me and I always dreamed of holding up my newborn like Rafiki does Simba.
By gawd they have some weird traditions in San Francisco! I can tell you it was quite the culture shock for me, coming from a quieter part of the world, to learn of the glory hole! It takes all sorts to make a world!
I'll be honest, watching the lion King now hits different for me. The scene where Simba and his dad are playing and Simba asks "we'll always be together right?" brings me to tears now. My dad passed away in May and now the beginning of this movie gets me all the time now.
I have such a special connection to this movie, I grew up with rheumatoid arthritis, and every time when I was having a day with a lot of pain, ( which back then was just about everyday,) I would ask my mom to put on Lion King for me, and it always made me happy. 😁 ( except when Mufasa died, then I cried my eyes out, and I still do at age 27) I still watch it every single Friday. 😊 and when I’m too sick to watch it, I listen to the soundtrack.

When they were crying from seeing touching moments like Simba and Mofusa playing. Man their gonna cry harder when Mufasa dies, and I can't blame them because that's the saddest part in the movie.
This movie always hits me where it hurts. I saw it for the first time in the theater with my father in the summer of '94. Six months later he was dead by his own hand. I was 8. Our post movie conversation panned out very similar to Simba and Mufasa's, the big difference being that my father didn't end up dying protecting me but rather protecting himself. I literally cannot watch this film without being overwhelmed with pride, sorrow, guilt, shame, anger, resentment, and regret, especially during the ghost Mufasa scene.
Geez man, that’s horrible. Hope you’re doing okay now. It’s not quite the same, but this film came out two days after my maternal grandfather passed away. Granted I wasn’t even born yet, but knowing that fact still adds a certain sadness to this film regardless when I watch it
I obviously didn't know your father, but assuming he was an otherwise devoted and caring father prior to his passing, it's possible that he took his own life because he may have reached a point where he felt that his ability to be that to you could no longer overcome whatever personal demons he could've been battling inside. I understand as a loved one of a victim of suicide it's hard to process why someone would do it and it's easy to feel like it's your fault for what he did, but I want to say that neither you nor your father should feel shame or guilt for what happened. Your father was likely very ill and he just didn't want to tell you and bother you with it because he wanted to stay strong for you. Only when he felt that his ability to stay being that strong father figure to you was finally going to be compromised by his ability to deal with his own personal issues did he probably feel like he had no other choice. Many people take their own lives because they're in what they feel is a desperate and hopeless situation after having spent much of their lives using their emotional energy to to hide and mask their issues so they could survive and/or take care of others rather than taking time to take care of themselves. If somebody had reached out to your father or he had asked someone for help maybe it could've turned out different but I hope you don't feel that he did what he did out of selfishness. I'm sure he remembered that talk with you after watching the movie and didn't want to let you down, so rather than facing a reality where he wouldn't be able to give 100% to you, he just decided to end it himself.

The actor that voiced Scar couldn't finish the last part of the "Be Prepared" song so the last part was actually sung by the actor that voiced Ed the Hyena.
This movie always gets me through because I had a hard life but I remember what Rafiki says and is true. Remember who you are and where you came from. You wouldn't be you if you chose to rise up to the occasion. It hits different when you're an adult and all the stuff is relatable.
During Mufasa's death, all girls cried, but only one was not trying to hide it by putting their hands in front of their face. Ellie is pure, I like that.

I support both of these suggestions. Dinosaur made me cry. Tarzan is great. Phil Collins went all out on the soundtrack too. I actually prefer it over any of his actual career music.

Looking back this film messed me up as a kid. Lots of disney's films are like this, even today, but I think disney always did it right with teaching kids on pretty mature or serious subjects. This film will forever hold up as an absolute classic
i loved your reaction to this. at the beginning when you said "that animation is really good for 1994". ohit is not just good. it is EPIC. the first 5 minutes of this movie is single handedly the most incredible animation in movie history!! also, in that scene when scar is talkinga bout killing the king, they are marching, it is the goose step that they did under adolf hitler nazi germany.
Contrary to CGI quality, traditional animation doesn't get better each decade. You'd be surprised how detailed and accurate were Disney animations even from 1937! (Snow White)😃
Michy, and others, dont glare at Elli for being emotional at the right times, EVERYONE cried big crocodile tears when Simba saw his dad in the lake and in the stars. I ushered at the theater in NYC when the broadway show was playing, and Not only did they pulll off the stampede? but when THIS scene happened? they pulled that off too, not a dry eye in the house- it was as if the audience reaction was scripted it happened EVERY TIME the show played. Some left their seats and went outside for a bit to calm down.

Just to put into perspective how brutal Scar's death was: hyenas have a bite force strong enough to chomp through bones the same way we bite into celery. And, they have no ethical dilemmas when it comes to eating their prey alive. So they probably didn't even kill Scar right away; they ate him before he was even dead, meaning he endured SO much pain before finally dying to blood loss. Death by hyena attack is one of the most brutal ways to die in nature, because in actuality, contrary to what the movie shows, hyenas are actually BETTER hunters than lions! Their hunting success rate is higher than that of lionesses, and they even beat lions when they attack in a group. We didn't know that in '94; so, the most famous animated movie of all time did a HUGE disservice to hyenas as predators. Justice for hyenas! 🙏 These guys are SCARIER than lions!
Meerkats are in the Mongoose Family and they are insectivores and love to eat Scorpions. Warthogs are in the Pig Family and their main diet is grass, Fruit & Veggies but can eat bugs at the bottom of roots. Lions are in the Cat Family & can only survive on meat. Lions do chew on "cat grass" as coolant for their bodies. But it works for the movie (;

I am a german borned 1984. I had no Connection to this until I met my fiance 2015. I watched it 1994 on cinema. For me as a kid it was just a great movie I met my fiance end of november 2015. She never wachted this movie before that. She was born and raised in Teheran, Iran. We watched that Movie together in December 2015. I was emotianally connectect to the family part of Mufasa and Simba. "Just" a kid lost his daddy. But my fiance was much more connected to it. For her it meant to be the history of the Iran before 1979. Mufasa = Reza Sha Palavi Sen. Simba = Reza Sha Palavi jun. The hyenas represents Ayatollah Kohmenie or his uncle. The king went to exile and never retourned back. From this point this movie is a wish for a better future. Let we bet it come true.
The Lion King is my favorite movie of all time! I still have my plush Simba from Disney world Florida with me. I saw the movie in 3D when they re-released it. The remake wasn't very good. The cast is perfect, the script is perfect, the delivery is perfect, the animation is perfect, & the soundtrack is the greatest movie soundtrack of all time... also perfect. As many amazing movies Disney/Pixar & other studios have released to date, to me, this is still the greatest animated movie of all time. The emotion it invokes is a testament to its greatness.
Saw the Lion King on Broadyway about 10 years ago when I was in school as part of a choir trip, one of the best memories I have! It was so moving, we also got to work with some of the performers and learn a lot about the musical pieces earlier that day before hand ❤ shout out to Mr.Ullman and John Hanson Middle school for arranging that trip!
I always start worrying with this movie when people start the crying early. Jeremey Irons absolutely kills it as Scar. "Long Live the King" is one of the most haunting line deliveries ever. People always seem so surprised when they're crying during an animated film. They deal with very real emotions and situations like any other film can. And Disney... they are absolutely masters of finding that emotional knife to just gut you with and then overwhelm you with later.
What people don't realize is the January 1994 earthquake affected those who were working on this movie and they had to work harder and faster to help put out the movie by summer.
Another good and perhaps underated movie with James Earl Jones, voice of Mufasa and Darth Vader, is the Sneakers. Jones is just one of the many all-star cast members in Sneakers.
Lion King 2 is Romeo and Juliet and it is well done... i really liked that they actually payed homage to Lion King 2 in South Park in episode where they clearly had a Romeo and Juliet theme and they never mentioned it and talked the whole episode only about references from Lion King 2...

Exactly, I know how it felt like to lose my dad 2 years ago to liver disease. At least my mom spent 14 years together with him until the end.

Keep in mind its the female lions that do most of the hunting AND caring after the cubs. Females are stronger than males emotionally and mentally.

I have such a special connection to this movie, I grew up with rheumatoid arthritis, and every time when I was having a day with a lot of pain, ( which back then was just about everyday,) I would ask my mom to put on Lion King for me, and it always made me happy. 😁 ( except when Mufasa died, then I cried my eyes out, and I still do at age 27) I still watch it every single Friday. 😊 and when I’m too sick to watch it, I listen to the soundtrack.

When they were crying from seeing touching moments like Simba and Mofusa playing. Man their gonna cry harder when Mufasa dies, and I can't blame them because that's the saddest part in the movie.
This movie always hits me where it hurts. I saw it for the first time in the theater with my father in the summer of '94. Six months later he was dead by his own hand. I was 8. Our post movie conversation panned out very similar to Simba and Mufasa's, the big difference being that my father didn't end up dying protecting me but rather protecting himself. I literally cannot watch this film without being overwhelmed with pride, sorrow, guilt, shame, anger, resentment, and regret, especially during the ghost Mufasa scene.

It’s not quite the same, but this film came out two days after my maternal grandfather passed away.
Granted I wasn’t even born yet, but knowing that fact still adds a certain sadness to this film regardless when I watch it
I obviously didn't know your father, but assuming he was an otherwise devoted and caring father prior to his passing, it's possible that he took his own life because he may have reached a point where he felt that his ability to be that to you could no longer overcome whatever personal demons he could've been battling inside. I understand as a loved one of a victim of suicide it's hard to process why someone would do it and it's easy to feel like it's your fault for what he did, but I want to say that neither you nor your father should feel shame or guilt for what happened. Your father was likely very ill and he just didn't want to tell you and bother you with it because he wanted to stay strong for you. Only when he felt that his ability to stay being that strong father figure to you was finally going to be compromised by his ability to deal with his own personal issues did he probably feel like he had no other choice. Many people take their own lives because they're in what they feel is a desperate and hopeless situation after having spent much of their lives using their emotional energy to to hide and mask their issues so they could survive and/or take care of others rather than taking time to take care of themselves.
If somebody had reached out to your father or he had asked someone for help maybe it could've turned out different but I hope you don't feel that he did what he did out of selfishness. I'm sure he remembered that talk with you after watching the movie and didn't want to let you down, so rather than facing a reality where he wouldn't be able to give 100% to you, he just decided to end it himself.

The actor that voiced Scar couldn't finish the last part of the "Be Prepared" song so the last part was actually sung by the actor that voiced Ed the Hyena.
This movie always gets me through because I had a hard life but I remember what Rafiki says and is true. Remember who you are and where you came from. You wouldn't be you if you chose to rise up to the occasion. It hits different when you're an adult and all the stuff is relatable.
During Mufasa's death, all girls cried, but only one was not trying to hide it by putting their hands in front of their face.
Ellie is pure, I like that.
The pain in mufasas eyes when's he's about to fall is heartbreaking.

Looking back this film messed me up as a kid. Lots of disney's films are like this, even today, but I think disney always did it right with teaching kids on pretty mature or serious subjects. This film will forever hold up as an absolute classic

Contrary to CGI quality, traditional animation doesn't get better each decade. You'd be surprised how detailed and accurate were Disney animations even from 1937! (Snow White)😃

Michy, and others, dont glare at Elli for being emotional at the right times, EVERYONE cried big crocodile tears when Simba saw his dad in the lake and in the stars. I ushered at the theater in NYC when the broadway show was playing, and Not only did they pulll off the stampede? but when THIS scene happened? they pulled that off too, not a dry eye in the house- it was as if the audience reaction was scripted it happened EVERY TIME the show played. Some left their seats and went outside for a bit to calm down.

Just to put into perspective how brutal Scar's death was: hyenas have a bite force strong enough to chomp through bones the same way we bite into celery. And, they have no ethical dilemmas when it comes to eating their prey alive. So they probably didn't even kill Scar right away; they ate him before he was even dead, meaning he endured SO much pain before finally dying to blood loss. Death by hyena attack is one of the most brutal ways to die in nature, because in actuality, contrary to what the movie shows, hyenas are actually BETTER hunters than lions! Their hunting success rate is higher than that of lionesses, and they even beat lions when they attack in a group. We didn't know that in '94; so, the most famous animated movie of all time did a HUGE disservice to hyenas as predators. Justice for hyenas! 🙏 These guys are SCARIER than lions!

I am a german borned 1984. I had no Connection to this until I met my fiance 2015. I watched it 1994 on cinema. For me as a kid it was just a great movie
I met my fiance end of november 2015. She never wachted this movie before that. She was born and raised in Teheran, Iran.
We watched that Movie together in December 2015. I was emotianally connectect to the family part of Mufasa and Simba. "Just" a kid lost his daddy.
But my fiance was much more connected to it.
For her it meant to be the history of the Iran before 1979. Mufasa = Reza Sha Palavi Sen. Simba = Reza Sha Palavi jun. The hyenas represents Ayatollah Kohmenie or his uncle.
The king went to exile and never retourned back. From this point this movie is a wish for a better future. Let we bet it come true.
The Lion King is my favorite movie of all time! I still have my plush Simba from Disney world Florida with me. I saw the movie in 3D when they re-released it. The remake wasn't very good. The cast is perfect, the script is perfect, the delivery is perfect, the animation is perfect, & the soundtrack is the greatest movie soundtrack of all time... also perfect. As many amazing movies Disney/Pixar & other studios have released to date, to me, this is still the greatest animated movie of all time. The emotion it invokes is a testament to its greatness.
I hope there will be a sequel reaction, the best song "he lives in you" is in that movie.

Saw the Lion King on Broadyway about 10 years ago when I was in school as part of a choir trip, one of the best memories I have! It was so moving, we also got to work with some of the performers and learn a lot about the musical pieces earlier that day before hand ❤ shout out to Mr.Ullman and John Hanson Middle school for arranging that trip!
It’s still my favorite Broadway show I ever saw, ever since seeing it back in 2009.

I always start worrying with this movie when people start the crying early. Jeremey Irons absolutely kills it as Scar. "Long Live the King" is one of the most haunting line deliveries ever.
People always seem so surprised when they're crying during an animated film. They deal with very real emotions and situations like any other film can. And Disney... they are absolutely masters of finding that emotional knife to just gut you with and then overwhelm you with later.
you should all watch "the land before time", it's another heart breaker. and it's about adorable dinosaurs!

Lion King 2 is Romeo and Juliet and it is well done... i really liked that they actually payed homage to Lion King 2 in South Park in episode where they clearly had a Romeo and Juliet theme and they never mentioned it and talked the whole episode only about references from Lion King 2...
