The book reversed the actual Royal family by having his father the beloved movie-star pop-icon, and his mother royal, instead of at the time the mother being the beloved Princess Di, both of who died young. And the book was written when the Queen was still alive but the movie had a king, as it is today.

A maypole is part of a medieval ceremony where colorful streamers are attached to the top of a pole in the middle of the village green. Each person takes the end of one streamer and they all dance and prance around the pole in opposite direction, causing the streamers to sort of weave together in colorful patterns as the streamers wrap around the pole. Your commentary was devoid of any shock or thirst toward this same-sex "royal" rom-com twist. Instead, it flowed so genuinely and matter-of-fact toward the romance/comedy aspect that I found myself smiling in agreement with you throughout. And yes, since MN was the only state in the Union (plus the Dist of Col) to vote for Walter Mondale, Democrats would have definitely carried it for a progressive, even if a bit over-the-top, President Ellen Claremont just as you assured. A great offering, Derek! And yes, I'm hitting the like and subscribe buttons without any prompting.

On a lighter note, a funny anecdote to 8:18 and your calling Henry a rapscallion. I was dating a chef one time and called him a rapscallion. Apparently he’d never heard the word before, because his response was a puzzled- “But…why am I a hip-hop onion?” 😂😂 I died.

"Racey in places" would be the description I would give this movie. It's very "Hallmark" -esk but (IMO) much better. The two actors playing Alex and Henry did a fantastic job and their chemistry (both romantically and comedically) was so on point. I absolutely loved this movie and have already watched it over a dozen times. It's good to see the West make a really good gay love story without resorting to objectification, drugs, cheating, and the manufactured drama that ALWAYS gets put in Queer stories from the US. Those cliches are one of the reasons why, when I am looking to watch LGBTQIA+ content (which is most of the time, btw) I always turn to the BL markets in places like Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. They release dozens and dozens and dozens of shows every year and they are great.

@@jamesliggins891 Every genre of entertainment has problematic tropes, especially when it comes to romance. They are called cliches for a reason, after all. But, over the years, the BL industry in particular has begun to turn away from what made early Yaoi content so controversial and problematic. The quality of stories, acting, cinematography, and overall vibe of the genre is trending up and becoming more and more a place where great representation lives. The biggest hurdle that the foreign BL industry has right now is people's aversion to subtitles.

    • @jamesliggins891

@@ninil1562 i mean i'm personally not a huge fan of queer romances as opposed to other genres (sci-fi, action/adventure, horror, political intrigue, family drama, spy thriller, etc) starring queer characters anyway, and that's in a western or eastern context. So, something like KinnPorsche to me gets credit for stepping outside of that wheelhouse, but a lot of queer cinema is just romance/rom-com). and i think you can often tell the difference between stories written primarily by/for women and stories that are not, so a lot of BL can feel fetishistic or inauthentic even when it's trying not to be. although that's another conversation.
but the main point is that there's a good amount of western queer content that is not based around trauma. and even if BL is starting to move in a better direction, plenty of the most popular current ones still involve obsession, objectification, a lack of queer community, restrictive sexual dynamics, homophobia, manufactured drama and the like. it's telling that the genre is literally called "boys love" -- queer men are restricted to a specific genre with a specific audience. i don't think any nation's industry is at a place where it's queer cinema and TV feels fully realized and authentic, it's either (1) trying to lean into romance and the female market because it will bring in the most money or (2) limited to the best friend or side character (or worse, just absent) in other mainstream offerings.
long story short everybody's still got work to do.

Can you recommend any good BL romcom stories? I can't put up with one of the partners bullying the other or being homophobic. I want to watch feel good comedies. I've watched K-dramas for many years and right now I'm not into the "foolish girl pining after the boss who treats her like sh** but ends up falling in love with her"mode. Apply this to BL and we've got the same power dynamics I don't really want to watch. But if there's something worth watching please let me know!

I think they broke royal etiquette rules all over the place. I have to remind myself it is a COMEDY and the situations have to unfold uncluttered. (Testimony to the accuracy they do achieve that we can look at minor points.) For instance, Alex is constantly showing up and surprising Henry in an apparently mostly empty residence. I would think in reality he would have a hard time getting past the guards, all over the place.
Also, at that point, one could argue that partisan politics are over for that election cycle as otherwise the "palace" could complain for any time Henry is photographed next to Alex.

Not always been a fan of your style but this was a great reaction, so 👍. About the Museum scene: in the book Henry is a regular visitor of the Royal Victoria and Albert Museum and has befriended its security chief, who has provided him with a key for his frequent nocturnal visits on the provision that he (Henry) calls in advance. Henry has asked for some specific rooms to be lighted for his tour of the Antique statues with Alex. That’s the scene shown in the film. Behind the scenes fact: the actual authorities of the RVAM insisted that no external lighting be brought on the premises for the filming. What we see is exactly how it would be for an evening showing. Personally I think it makes the scene beautifully intimate and evocative. And, yes: perfect casting. Uma Thurman is as unexpected and welcome a figure as Olivia Colman is in Heartstopper.

In the book you find out a bit about what Alex and Henry do after the election and how they can each be true to themselves.
Also, a lot of political people also objected to the red and blue map of the election. I just set that aside as this is mainly a romance and I didn’t examine other stuff too closely.
In the book there are tons of sweet e-mails between Alex and Henry where their relationship grows, so yes, seems very fast progression in the movie without these.
    Glad you’re proud of Minnesota!

but why include politics if you're not going even try and be accurate about it. this is why i can't "overlook" things like this and think they drag down a film. you could have just set your story in a place other than politics, and then it wouldn't stand out as so bad. don't write about what you don't know about!

Good review. I agree with much of what you said. Ultimately, I see this film as a proof-of-concept, although this story would be a much more effective mini-series. There were a lot of ideas/issues/characters that were only introduced & not fully developed, and to the film's detriment. The production quality you mention seems to be reflected in the script adaptation. Haven't read the book myself, but surely these things were examined more thouroughly there. Hopefully the film's success will inspire production companies to invest in this genre of film. Clearly, there is an audience for it.

Thank you for being an ally. With the state of things currently, the more the better. Thanks also for watching something like this and being willing to maybe push your comfort zone a bit and learn. Also, I know others have mentioned it but yes, gay men can do the missionary position. The one on his back (the "bottom") brings his knees up and that positions things better. I love this film. The book is better and this movie cut out a lot of the story and condensed things but it's still great as its own separate entity. I loved that they didn't shy away from from the intimacy, those moments were my favorite parts. They got it right. The Paris hotel scene was so beautifully done and the museum scene where they are dancing with the statues, just so perfectly romantic. That was the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The museum was started by Queen Victoria and her husband Albert in 1852 from the collection of objects they accumulated during their reign so it's associated with the royal family and that's why Henry had access to it. It's not too far from Kensington Palace which is the residence where Henry is living in this story. In the book he makes arrangements with the night guard to sneak in again in the middle of the night. So many great innuendos as well, "and I thought Alexander Gabriel Claremont-Diaz was a mouthful" "he is." The scene where Zahra finds Henry hidden in the closet in the hotel room was so funny.

46:58 This map is the most unbelievable part of the whole movie! Since 1932 (91 years), Minnesota has voted Blue in 20 Presidential elections and voted Red only 3 times. And voted Dem 100% of the time since *1976.* In 1984, MN was the only Blue state for Mondale-Ferraro. I was very offended by the map too. They should've had a different state be red cuz MN is bluer than its lakes.

Thanks Derek! I always enjoy your videos… even when I am like, “What did he just say?!” 🤦🏽‍♂️ In regards to a potential American President being married to a high ranking member of the British Royal Family. It would probably be more of an issue in the UK than here in the US. Here legally it would not be an issue. Politically I am sure some Karens/Kens would lose it. And of course the Gay issue would have to be dealt with in this particular scenario. In the UK it would be HUGE. The Royal Family by British law must remain A-political. As Henry says, they are not allowed to even vote! If a “Royal Highness” were to be married to an American President, Republican or Democrat. It could be viewed as the Monarchy taking a political side in American politics. Which would be unthinkable and not allowed. What would probably happen, as is hinted in the book, is Henry (much like Prince Harry basically did with Meghan) have to give up the HRH Title and remove himself from the line of succession. Still remaining a “Prince” by birth. But no longer a working Royal of the Family or representative of the UK in any way. And as for Minnesota voting Republican?! 😬😬😬 This is a fantasy… DEAL WITH IT! 🤪🤣🤪 Keep up the good work! 👏🏽👍🏽👏🏽

Yes, Henry will have to abdicate if Alex goes into politics. Also, if the Crown allowed H&A to get married and Alex didn’t go into politics, would A become a duke, or even a prince consort if somehow Henry became King? That’s almost more world changing than of Alex goes into politics, so that could be the power move.

    • @pollyfossil8466

Yes, Henry would absolutely have to abdicate in order to marry someone who was active in politics, in any country, not just a foreign country. And he absolutely would not have been standing on the stage when the President got reelected - that would be an insane breach of protocol. But I just switched my brain off at that point 😆

As an American citizen he would NOT be able to accept a Royal Title, he would have to give up his American citizenship to do so. In other words, if he and Henry get married, he Alex does not have to renounce his US citizenship unless the Royal family wants to title him as a Prince Consort or any other Royal title! Further more Henry can become First Spouse! 🎉 P.S. Magen, I think, was born Canadian and became a U.S resident to work in the U.S. Then she married a prince and all went to H…!

I mean young royals made the swedish royal family come out and say "hey if one of our kids was gay we would be fine with that" this movie probably wont do anything but at some point there has got to be a gay prince/princess or some kind of royal whos part of the LGBTQ+ so maybe it will give the british royal family what they need to come out and say that. Now im american so idfk if they are public about their opinions on the LGBTQ+ community.
Also i was crying from the fight in the rain until the very end because of how sweet some of those moments are and of how sad they are
Also that is Stephen Fry he's a very well known gay actor. He was in sex education, Heartstopper, RWRB, and recently Everything Now.
Also another thing i love seeing people who are scared to say the word "gay" because they think its offensive. I see it alot as a disabled person with my own mom. She doesnt like calling me disabled (even though i am) because shes afraid its offensive. Incase you are wondering its not offensive :)
Maybe i should move to Minnesota because i live in idaho and well its not the best to be gay here.
Sorry i keep adding to this but i love seeing straight people reacting to gay/queer shows and movies because it shows that even straight people (idk how to word this) but gay relationships get sexualized and romanticized alot in the media but seeing straight people react to it and not sexualize/romanticize it is amazing. You dont see this enough in todays society.
