Dream Barn Siding Begins! (Installing Metal Wainscoting)

- This is my first time installing metal wainscoting. I made all the corner trim, J-channel and base flashing on the metal brake. I decided to use coroplast as a "rainscreen" to keep the wood siding held away from the zip system sheathing to prolong the life of the siding. I also put it behind the steel siding, but that was more to keep the spacing consistent with the wood. If any of these techniques look familiar, I'd like to give a big shout out to Kyle @RRBuildings for being my TH-cam University professor.

Just an observation. When I have used zip tape I use a roller to put it on. That is the manufactures recommendation too. It really seals the zip tape and makes a great seal. The wall looks really great, I think it will last a long time and serve you well. Keep up the great work. Bee safe and healthy.
They say if you can see the pattern of the zip sheathing poking up through the tape, you're good. I am pretty diligent about that. Thanks!

I restored the exterior of my 1911 house in the PNW. The carpenters were leaving gaps “that the caulking will fill.”
I called them both over to a corner and pointed out the loose miter of the clapboard siding and told them that they are looking at a 5-year job. Every 5 years I’ll be out here reapplying that caulk. (SW corners especially!!!)
I told them I want a 50-year corner. They asked me if they should remove those first few courses. I asked back if it’s a 50-year corner?
I was paying them T&M. The cheapest incremental spend was that extra attention to detail that is saving me $ every few years. Good ROI. They thanked me at the end of the job. So many years as carpenters and this was their first project where the customer was willing to pay for top quality. Heck, it was a few hundred dollars more on a big job. Best incremental spend on that job. ($73,000 second mortgage.)
I spent most of my life hiring contractors to do work. Some were excellent, some were awful. Since moving to this property, we've seen the full spectrum. I've learned a lot watching them and it all comes down to just giving a crap about the job. There's usually a "right" way (or maybe several "right" ways) to do things and if you care, you take the time to do it right. It amazes me how many "professionals" there are that just don't care about their work.
Vino Farm Aye!!! One very short-lived contractor I hired to help inside had a favorite expression: Caulk and paint make the carpenter what he ain’t.

Jim, it's extremely satisfying from a spectator's perspective (having spent most of my professional life around the building trades) to see the result of obvious advance research and attention to detail. It's even nicer to see less corner-cutting than you see from most so-called 'professionals' (like *none*!). The barn is looking absolutely spectacular!! Well done. Brilliant idea to use the black wainscoting. I’ve seen so many builds lately that have the wood already soggy because of splash back. It’s going to look great!
Yes, the messy bottoms of so many barns with wood siding was the inspiration for the wainscoting. We don't use gutters up here because they cause problems in the winter. So every raindrop eventually splashes on the ground on the side of the building. There's going to be a lot of wood siding on here, but it won't be getting dripped on!
I was saying perfect when you put in the last part. and thought cool while you were putting it up. My jaw dropped when I saw that you bent the pieces yourself to make them fit perfectly on the barn. Great job. did you have to buy that piece of equipment? loved the bee photo bomb. and EYE PROTECTORS OVER EYES PLEASE!!!!

Lol that is a crazy big tool belt, it looks like it weighs as much as you do!
A big padded belt disperses the weight a lot more than a skinny belt. I'm old and done with skinny, painful belts!

That corrugated batten will actually trap moisture behind it right at the fasteners.
Maybe, but probably a whole lot less moisture than if there was nothing. It’s called a rain screen.

Are you putting enough pressure on the zip tape? Pretty sure you're suppose to use a roller or something after applying it. It's supposed to be a pressure activated adhesive.
As long as you can see the impression of the zip sheathing poking through, you know it’s pressed enough. It is possible to do that by hand if you take your time. I always take the time. The videos are edited to take out the boring parts like pressing tape!

Wow this is looking good, here in Australia we would just use the metal as a wall and not even bother with the Zip Insulation (temperature variation-3 Celsius 40c). So is the timber for ascetic or cost considerations?
Hey Vino Bambino ... its been awhile. The barn is looking fantastic. That Roman building blood is second nature and i can see by the quality of your build is really kicking in. Keep up the awesome work and channel. I want to ask, where is the wine? I see the bees and tomatoes - what about the grapes and vino? No vineyard plans?
Sometimes we get the grapes, sometimes the birds beat us to them. They're looking pretty nice this year. Hoping for a harvest in September or so.
Do you have hole drilled in the bottom rail to let the water drip out?
It's not oriented in a way to collect water. And the back is open for it to dry if water ever does get on it.

It’s an alum-a-brake. The bells and whistles are worth the extra money. A lot of other brands don’t have the useful features this one does. It’s one of those tools that works as advertised and is built like a tank. It’s a joy to use.
You’re incredibly talented. Great job. I winced when I saw you working the metal siding without gloves though. As for the ridges or valleys for the screws, I’ve been told and seen both. I personally use the ridges, but my equipment shed has been up since the 80’s, the screws are in the valleys and have lasted just fine.
The lack of gloves with the sharp metal disturbs me as well. When I work with that type of stuff I always, always cut myself if I don't have gloves on.
Does that metal brake collapse for storage? You are making nice pieces with it but when you get finished what do you do with it.

It’s not in an orientation where it would collect water. But the back is completely open for evaporation anyway.
Can you use one of those cardboard tape holders for that zip tape? Basically, it has a plastic part that presses the tape to a surface then you just drag? Maybe more complex. Ah well!
Like the neat trick with the corrugated flashing. It is a good idea to let the wooden boards and plate have a breathing room from the wall. Reduces the chances of rot/damages. But, aren't you worried about wasps/bats etc... wanting to make home behind the corrugated flashing? Then again, maybe it is too tight for them to sneak in through any openings on the ends?
There’s no more than a 1/16” gap anywhere to get behind those corrugated ribs.

Is the bottom trim going to collect water or is there a way it will drain? Looks fantastic
It's just a shelf on top, it can't hold much. The back of the "box" is open. I can't imagine much water getting back there and it will evaporate if it does. It faces concrete, not any siding.
Did you use the a tape roller on the zip tape? Supposedly it won’t activate the pressure sensitive adhesive properly without it.

I did not use the roller. If you are diligent and carefully press the tape into the sheathing so that the pattern of the surface of the sheathing pokes through the top of the tape, you have sufficient adhesion. The roller is not magic, but it does make the job faster. The roller costs $40. I did not use the roller.
Looking great so far Jim, just a thought but do you have drainage in that bottom boxing at 1:40 ish? Otherwise it is going to trap moisture against the edges of the sheets and potentially start corroding them.
Aha it sits on top, sorry I missed that first time, thought it was a channel!
The "box" is open at the back and hangs below any wood. The opening faces concrete.

Ha ha... I don't think so. It does makes me work a lot slower, so maybe that makes me think about stuff a bit more, but I'm not doing anything different than I would if there was no camera.

Jim, won't that bottom trim for the Wainscoting catch water with no way to escape? (also thanks for the update loving the build and the bees :-) )
It's a three sided box. Open in the back. If water somehow got BEHIND it, it will evaporate.
@@vinofarmIt doesn't look like you sealed the bottom of the walls (between the bottom plate and the concrete). Are you not worried about air leaks, water and insects sneaking under the bottom plate. @@Razmaatazz I didn't film it, but I actually did heavily caulk it with 100% silicone. Plus there's a foam pad under the sill plates. I'm going to run silicone caulk on the inside, too. I am on it!

Nice pan break, how thick of a material will it cut and fold?
It's an aluminum brake for bending .019" trim coil. It will do two layers at a time, but I don't push it.
Vino Farm can I ask where you got it from? Would it be good for making metal lid covers?

No, There is blocking behind the sheathing. 2 of the three rows of screws went into solid wood. I was careful on the other row and it was fine. Slow and steady...

It's called a "brake" or a "siding brake" or a "metal brake."

At the bottom? The channel at the bottom will collect crap. I know it looks nice but wont stuff get in the gaps?
If you noticed on the ground below the trim, there's nothing but large round rocks. There are no trees above the building to drop leaves. The only thing getting in there will be drips of water. There's not going to be dirt anywhere around the base of the building to splash up onto the siding.
Vino Farm i hope your right! Just check it in a few months. I built a bird aviary a similar way and ended up with a snake getting in through a hole which has rusted from water pooling and being held there by debris. I hope itll work with no issues tho!
@@budgiebreder It seems like everyone thinks the "box" is face up and there's a "channel" for water and stuff to collect. Look at 4:50 and see that the "box" is open ended at the back. The panels just sit on the top like a shelf. There's nowhere for water to collect. Also, that trim is aluminum, so rust will not be an issue.
