    I've had a FoodSaver since the mid 90's, and I can't put a $ amount on what this machine has saved me. I'm a widow, with no children living in my home, but you wouldn't know it by the amount of Food I cook. I still cook...like.. for a family of five, and with the FoodSaver...I can have food any night of the week, just like having the convenience of a TV dinner, and I waste nothing, not to mention cooking in quantity saves money. You won't regret getting this machine. I recently bought half of a Beef, brought the frozen packages home and re packaged them vac-sealed and air tight. Can one person eat half a cow in six months or a year (probably not), but with the vac-packed meat...I'm not worried if it takes me 2-3 years. With the inflation upon us now and we don't know when the end of this will be. I'm ready for it!

    When you vacuum seal product like beans, poke some holes in the original bag and vacuum seal. The sealer will remove all air and because you poked holes in the original bag, you'll remove ALL air

    Here's another tip for everyone......
    Put a book close to the device, put your item to be vacuumed / sealed on top of it, then feed it into the device.
    This keeps the bags more level and ensures the device can remove all the oxygen easily.

    For mylar bags, cut two vac bag strips 1/2 inch wide and 1/2 inch longer than your bag. Place them all the way down in the bag letting them stick out the top just a little. The strips "bumps" will allow the sealer to pull a vacuum.

    I’ve used an old FoodSaver for many years. In addition to food, I’ve used it to store important papers and photos. I’ve also chopped down the bags to a small size, sealed around it and filled it with toiletries into travel size pouches to save space and prevent spillage in my luggage. I’ve also sealed family heirloom jewelry for long term storage and to minimize tarnishing.

    I’ve had one forever. Love it. Have given some as gifts. One thing I do is buy the bulk rolls from Az (online) and reroll onto smaller rollers. I also take a can of tomato paste and make a 5” deep bag (sealed on 3 sides). Put in a tablespoon of tomato paste in one end and seal into a pocket. Keep adding one by one and sealing each pocket as you go then seal or vac/seal. Snip off a pocket or two as needed always leaving the remaining ones sealed. Kind of a chain of easy to use portions with no waste.
    Great way to portion out ingredients for a gift meal to be cooked later. Or snacks.... Happy sealing!

    My first food saver was about 25 years ago. And I wore it out. Then when I came down to Florida I bought one that I use with my mom and myself. And it's up to year 15. They're wonderful if you take the time to do things correctly. I tested my food saver up north by putting a fresh piece of salmon in it and sealed it. And Dated it. And I took it out 2 years later for my freezer. And when I cooked it it tasted like we had just bought it. So pretty cool stuff and it does great things also.....

      I've had my vacuum sealer for years and it is fantastic. I found a package of lobster 3years after placing it in my freezer ...lol, couldn't believe how fresh and pink it was . This device is the best for long time refrigeration/freezing. If you package meats, be sure to place the meat on a flat surface...covered, allow it to freeze before vacuum sealing it. This prevents the excess water from spilling into your device as it's vacuuming the air from the bag....👍👍👍 . I'm trying to convince a friend to purchsse one....it's the best thing on the market...I have 2...lol

    I watched a video some time ago that showed how to use smooth bags (ziploc) in the food saver and it took the air out. Basically what he did was put a strip in the bag and it hung out far enough to go into the air suction area. It worked well. I have never done this but it might be something you look into. This would work with the smooth bagged chips, cereals etc.

    I use it for meats but I love it for when I make double and triple batches of pork stew (Debone a whole Boston Butt for a triple batch) and freeze the leftovers into family meal size pouches. When I don't want to cook I just boil a pot of water, drop my sealed bag of stew into it and let the water defrost and reheat the stew without drying it out one bit and no dirty pots because the pot only had hot water in it. I rev up the rice cooker and I avoid any active cooking time and utilize a large inexpensive piece of meat on sale all at once. You can even grind extra pork and freeze it for when you need it later for meatballs. Super handy device.

    ThaNKS FOR THE VIDEO i APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP.
    FYI> If you don't have the attachment for the mason jars, another way that works is using a canister. I put the mason jar with a lid inside the clear canister, then put the cover on the canister and vacuum seal. The lid with pop down as if it were in a canner. When you let the air out of the canister the mason jar will remain sealed and you may then put on the ring. It works well and when you unseal the jar you can hear the air escape as if it were canned using a canner.

    • @insidekateskitchen
      @insidekateskitchen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had several 'Food Savers' over the years and they just keep getting better. We have 3 freezers and buy bulk food for cheap and top end meat during the Holiday's and I seal them saving a ton of money. I buy my bags and rolls on Ebay saving even more money. If sealed properly I don't know how long they will last. I've used roasts, steaks and other cuts of meat 2 and 3 years old without a problem Just watch if the bag loses it's vacuum it must be resealed or used quickly. Air is the enemy of fresh foods. Also, non frost free freezers are the best as it doesn't constantly suck the moisture out of the freezing compartment.

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree, on all points. Over 30+ years I've owned 2 FoodSavers. The 1st one was still working when I gave it to a family member and bought the 2nd one for myself, many years ago. Only recently did I need to replace the sealer gaskets. A relatively expensive maintenance item. A 30 second fix, BTW. FWIW... I didn't buy a frost free freezer for the same reason. Long term food storage is best in a freezer that has to be defrosted once in a while. A stable ZERO temp is best. Raising the temp enough to extract the accumulating moisture (frost) reduces shelf life of the food.

    I save chicken carcasses and boil them up with veggies to make my own broth. Then I freeze the broth in a plastic container, pop the frozen broth out of the container, and then vacuum seal the frozen broth for freezing. Sometimes you might get a few "sharp" edges on the frozen liquid, so you can pre-wrap in a couple layers of plastic wrap before vacuum sealing to pad those sharp edges. You can do this with any liquid you'd like to save long term, even wine or broth that's been frozen into ice cube trays. I do this for recipes that call for a small amount of wine or broth, I don't want to open a whole bottle of wine or broth container for a half a cup. You can open the bag, take out a few cubes to use, and reseal the bag.

    • @oldtimerlee8820

      Definitely! A good dehydrator and a good vacuum sealer is well worth the investment. I've had both for many years. They have paid for themselves and the associated food storage costs, as well, many times over. Buying in bulk. Buying at sale prices. Cooking in big batches -- as in making "Instant" rice, saves fuel costs along with saving money with DIY convenience foods. Dehydrate frozen vegetables, for example, means no food loss, if/when the power fails. Plus there's no electric bill for storing dehydrated frozen vegetables. Even the initial cost of mason jars and lids is recovered, as these can be re-used for countless years. Some of my mason jars were purchased in the late 1960's - early 1970's.
      Using mason jars reserves FoodSaver bags for frozen meats & vegetables. Love corn on the cob, vac sealed when the corn is in season! During harvest time, fruits and veg can be blanched (as applicable) and frozen until time is available to dehydrate for long term jar storage. IMO, all the appliances work hand-in-hand to provide the best in food storage. BTW, often the bags can be washed and re-used, several times, before they are too small to seal something else.
      FWIW, I have a 2001 Excalibur 9-tray w/timer and a "vintage" FoodSaver V2420 that are still doing their jobs! Yes, I do have return on investment for both of them.
      Hope these thoughts are helpful.

    dont forget that you use the larger jars and some other containers that vacuum seal with the adapter to liquid marinade your stakes, chickens, turkeys, fish, pretty much any type of meat. Just put it in the hard container like the larger jars, add the marinade to cover the meat and then vacuum seal the jar. It will pull all the air from the meat and when you release the pressure, the marinade then gets sucked back into the meat to replace the air that was pulled out. The meat works like a sponge when drawing in the marinade.

    Well you were right with some of your initial comments that a FoodSaver is a waste of money.
    Buy yourself a good chamber vac sealer and you'll never go back to the FoodSaver again Plus it opens up a whole world of possibilities.
    I just canned up some Wild Alaska salmon in retort pouches and you can't do those pouches in a FoodSaver.
    I burned up three Food Savers before I wised up and went to the chamber vac. Sure the Chamber vac cost more but the cost savings in bags alone will more than make up for the difference if you do a lot of vac sealing it'll probably only be a couple of years before the cost savings in bags alone will pay for the chamber vac.
    I do a lot of food preservation myself here in Alaska and there is no way I will ever own another FoodSaver.

    Often folks forget as you get older and the kids have gone buying in bulk to save money necessitates the need for a good food storage system since you use a lot less food. We've purchased bulk meats as well as deli products from all the big box stores as well as local store sales and wouldn't know what to do with the great buys without our old seal a meal and present food saver bag system. However because we use the meats in lesser amounts than most households we first wrap the meats such as steaks, chops etc. in plastic wrap making sure the wrap is tight around the meat then we add a piece of paper with the date and where purchased to the inside of the bag before sealing. After sealing the bags in the portion sizes we need and storing in the freezer the dates inside the bags show clearly which allows us to use the oldest ones first and the meat keeps absolutely fresh with never a freezer burn for over two years if necessary. For other meats etc. we know we will be using shortly it's not necessary to wrap first in the plastic wrap...just seal and store in the freezer.

    • @rachiti
      @rachiti 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wrapping it in plastic wrap first isn't necessary even if you're storing it for over a year. I store chicken stock (I freeze it in 2 cup tupperware containers then pop out the chicken stock frozen "brick") in the bottom of my freezer. I found some that was 3 years old & you would never have known it if not for the date written in sharpie in the spot designed for writing on with a sharpie. Also, some of us "folks" never had children. I've cooked for one or two ever since I left my parents home after high school. I still cook big batches - and freeze whatever we don't eat in time. It's yet another way I use my Foodsaver. If I have leftover soup, I freeze it in the tupperware then pop it out and seal it in a Foodsaver bag. It's great when it's 90 degrees out and my husband decides he wants soup...I don't have to heat up the house.

    I have worn two of these out. I purchased mine way back when they first came out.
    The one that I am using now is the Food Saver Game Saver Deluxe. It's more mechanical, but has a jar sealer. It pulls a HARD seal on all jars.
    We had left over turkey. I saved the rib cage/back bone and sealed it. What I am going to do in a few months is put this along with some vegetables in the "Power Pressure Cooker" and make some yummy soup.
    Living here on the Texas Gulf Coast we can get some big fresh jumbo shrimp. I was told and have done this, put about 15 large shrimp in a zip lock bag. Cover the shrimp with cold fresh water, burp the air out and put it in the freezer. Freezing the shrimp in water will let you keep the shrimp for up to 8 months. Just thaw them out, peel them and your ready to go for gumbo or stir fry shrimp. Yum Yum ! :-)

    I LOVE my Food Saver. ❤️
    I use it Everyday. I like to bake double batches of baked goods. I freeze them on a tray and then vacuum seal them & pop them back into the freezer.
    IF I didn’t have a sweet-tooth husband I’m sure they would last forever. 🥖🥐
    The jar vacuums are a god send for people who dehydrate EVERYTHING, like me. 😁

      FoodSaver brand? While I've had a seal to fail, once in a while (usually due to something that punctured the bag) the majority of the bags remained vac sealed until I opened them. Have had a few failures due to my failure to keep the sealing line clean. I can't blame FoodSaver for that problem. That said, I have used some inexpensive, hand pump type devices and their bags that had a large number of failures. Learned the hardway that sometimes "cheap" turns into "expensive" when foodstuff isn't properly / adequately protected.
      I've looked into chamber vacuum sealers. Nice for those who can afford them. Personally, I can't justify the extra expense based on the value I've received from my FoodSaver. Your circumstances may be much different from mine. In my case, I would not receive anything close to a return on my investment.

    As a prepper I use this old law.
    You cut your cloth in accordance to your means, but as a prepper I also know that buying cheap is not always value for money! FoodSaver is not the only Vacuum Sealer on the Market. There are some very much more affordable to someone on a low income. but the rule about value for money also rules.

I got it so I could shop less and buy in bulk without having the meat get gross... I am an extremely finicky eater, so if it looks even slightly dodgy I can't bring myself to eat it, and I feel like I'm shopping constantly so I'm not wasting food. I'm looking forward to not having to shop every 4 days!

    With Mylar bags, cut a narrow strip of the regular bag and place a short piece of it in bag near vacuum channel then seal as normal. Or put a short piece of plastic soda straw to allow air to escape. The machine should seal the straw and bag.

    Not sure you c an answer this question. I am shopping for my first food saver, but... there are sooo many model versions just with FoodSaver. I was reading through comments where someone had upgraded to a newer unit but it didn't have the "pulse" feature and the company rep for FS linked to a different model (The FoodSaver® FM5460 2-in-1 Food Preservation System) that had it... The description made it sound awesome - I started looking at it but when I read all the comments there was a backlash of "seasoned" foodsaver users (many 10 - 20 year veterans) who railed against it and started pointing out design flaws. Then, when I go to their website there are just so many variations. Now I am a bit gun shy about which unit would suit me best.
    I have a freeze dryer and realized to get the best use I need to be able to seal freeze dried food immediately after taking it out of the freeze dryer. I also will be using it for so may more other uses - standard FS stuff. I want it to be able to seal both regular bag material and also mylar bags. I also want to be able to use attachments with both mason jars and ziplock bags.
    So, how the heck do I sort out which unit really is good and not? Is this a subject you could tackle? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks..

      @tmtx7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My friend, I think we have the same problem, find out which one that can do what we need. Unfortunately there is none. So what I decide is just find out which one is the best suit my needs. What I see is the FS5200, this series of FS suits most of my needs but not all (as I said before). Now talking about freeze drying, I am so ticked to get the freeze-dryer but it is above and beyond my budget (lucky you you already have one), but anyways, hope my comment help you decide which one to get. Thanks for reading my comment.

      I’m probably too late but I called the company and spoke to someone in customer service. We spoke a very long time. We discussed what I planned to do, what I didn’t know I could do and what would be best. He actually talked me into a much cheaper unit and he was right. It was exactly what I wanted. It’s the FM3920. It’s smaller in size but does more than some of the larger units. It was only $119 and I’ve been on phone often with customer support . . . just to ask questions. They’ve been great, even a year later.

      I am on my third vacuumsealer and found its not the units themselves but the accessory tools that greatly improves the functionality.. We will frequently buy our ground 80/20 beef in the 10lb tubes and repackage it in 2 lb units.. double heat seal both ends and store within a box in the freezer.. The box helps to keep the units uniform in thickness and once frozen solid they stack so much easier..Chicken breast... but pat dry the meat because it can affect the seals if too much moisture is involved. Heavy soups and chili's.. elevate the sealer slightly higher than the bag of soup and hit the seal button when you have seen all of the air is sucked out.. The jar sealers are good especially if you have the 1/2 gl. jars.. The bags with the handheld reusable bags.. (1gl). terrific for sealing blocks of cheese that are un-sliced.. sandwich size will hold 24 slices at a time, depending on slice thickness, using wax paper dividers and reseal so easily..No the blocks don't mold because the air is sucked out and will last for weeks at a time..My biggest fear now is an electrical outage with two freezers full we even butcher up the bagged slabs of pork and beef in the restaurant supply stores..You can do so much and SAVE on food cost that you can work with the "less than top of the line" and afford to buy a couple and use in tandem

    your Mylar bad didnt take all the air out because of the open part of the bag sticks together.preventing all the air being sucked out. Ive seen food saver hacks where they would place a strip of vacuum sealer bag in the middle, vertically so it keep the two edges from sticking together. Some people cut the ziplock part out of a ziplock bag and use that. You can search youtube for these type of hacks.

  • @kiwisoup

    The reason other bags stop before taking all the air out is they aren't textured to prevent two smooth layers blocking air flow out, just an fyi. People have found ways around this.

    I noticed that your Mylar bag did not vacuum seal only sealed. A trip to make it actually evacuate air from the bag is to take a piece of the corrugated plastic from the food saver bag slip it into the mouth of the Mylar bag and then draw the air out. It should work then. Greg

  • @TimeSurfer206
    @TimeSurfer206 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The bit where it doesn't get all the air out and seals early? Bet it's because that bag has no "Air channels" for the air to be evacuated through. Basically, everything is so flat that the machine thinks it's evacuated, but it isn't, because the flaps closed together early and aren't letting any more air out.
    Cut a thin strip of that plastic, and lay it inside the bag at a 90 degree angle to the sealer. Have it reach from the top of the bag to into the food. If you're doing liquids or wet food (Spaghetti, etc.), you'll probably want one each side and one in the middle.The heat sealer should bond the new layer in just fine, and seal it up tight.
    Mind, I would test those mylar bags. That thick, some sealers might have issues bonding together 3 layers rather than two. Inflate a test bag with air. Seal it. Place a book on top, and come back tomorrow. If it isn't flat, it sealed.
    Really, the differences between a sealer bag and a not a sealer bag is the air channels, and sometimes, thickness. And also the presence of Zip sealers.

    That mylar bag was probably too thick. Plus it doesn't have the ridges like it does in the proprietary bags so the air can escape between the ridges. That mylar bag is flat and fools the unit into thinking that all the air was out so it should seal.
