Literally couldn't be less relevant to the enormous issues we face. Is your union rep going to stop global warming? Is you getting an average of 11% more per hour going to help the literal slaves in Libya that the US gov created the conditions for? Do your union dues stop Palestinians or Syrians or Somalis from being ripped apart by us bombs?
The UAW abandoned me and our movement halfway through, and when I got fired they wouldn’t return my calls. Finally 3 months after I got fired they called me up to ask how our unionizing was going. “I wouldnt know, I got fired.” “Oh....thats too bad.” *click*
Yeah unions are great and all but there are some real scummy fucks who run things at the local and district levels. Our local’s former BA was a cokehead and an alcoholic who would run every jobsite he was on into the fucking ground, just so he could steal tools and material or have something going on like an apprentice stripping wire for coke money in an electrical closet all day. After he got voted out, his sister in law became the new BA. his brother holds office in the international now. It saddens me when there’s so many ticket carrying union brothers and sisters who work in the field and don’t hold office that cherish the spirit and ideals of what the union is supposed to do but then you scratch at the surface of people holding office down at the hall and some of them are basically just in it so they can get paid $60k/yr for a title. Not anti union, but I feel like we need to make a change in the NEA, UAW, and even the IBEW and that change needs to start from the bottom up.
