      And V'landys.
Rule changes, then flip-flopping on rule changes. Then fiddling with the rule changes. Then changing rules as you go. And most of all, allowing rules to have interpretation - good Lord. You literally cannot do a worse job of implementing rules for a game.

For all injuries excluding HIA’s a substitution needs to forced. It will introduce a price to pay for laying down. Sure, you may get your penalty but you’ll lose that player and lose one substitution (or 2 if you decide to bring that player back on) or potentially be a man down while he is off the field, which may be enough to stop players laying down. If a player is genuinely injured from an illegal tackle, the defender should also be in the bin or sent off.
There’s a valid counter argument that suggests players may genuinely feel injured but are then okay to play on afterwards. Although fair, that player needs to be helped off the field immediately and be assessed. You can’t just let go of the ball (which is a knock on) and expect the referee to stop the game as well as stay on the field. The referee should’ve initially blown a knock on when Latrell put that ball down, cause the play was not stopped. He let Latrell do his job and it was embarrassing to see.
Simply put. Lay down = Get off

If the referees let the high shots go yesterday it'd have been a way more grubby game. You have to factor in that players are way way bigger, stronger and if they're allowed to get away with 'a bit' brutality (don't call it toughness) do you think both sets of players say 'OK all good .. lets play footy now'. No way, it ends with 80 mins of spiteful, vengeful crap, you're basically handing the whistle to the players.. thats too hard to referee. Going forward if the referees are allowed to use the necessary authority, it means the opposition has to find a legal way to stop Teddy. It is naive to think the hit on Tedesco was an accident, its total BS .. the coaches and players want to run the game and thats all it's ever been about. The toughness comes with fatigue, pressure, responsibility, loyalty, not retaliating and giving 100%. The 'win at all costs! we'll worry about the effects of head knocks later' mentality is redundant and Abdo for all the criticism actually is the tough person in all this, to handle bile that gets spat at him and still try to do the right thing by the key stakeholders in the game.

I watched the game and yes some sin bins were reactive. Although you can't deny the game has morphed into where it is today because of the coaching. Very little wrestling anymore to slow the play down. Instead attack high, yes to wrap the ball up but also maybe get a head bin or better still player out for the match.
You can see some players are not playing in the spirit of the game, they just want to out and out injure players.
Isn't the idea of competing and winning against your opponent all about out thinking, out playing and out skilling them. Not about trying to remove them from the game by injuring them.
All the excuses and blame shifting doesn't remove the real blight on Rugby League.
No more high tackles and only two in to tackle.
Let the ball be thrown around or offloaded more.
That'll make the game more exciting, open it up and increase the skill.

The Roosters Souths game was more farcical than F1 race or a soccer game . Players taking key players out around head so they know they get the new mandatory head bin and people milking laying down like soccer players do all the time . Football coaching has role is difficult and has become so unscrupulous .They have found more ways to cheat and get away with it hoping you won't notice . It's not like ist used to be.

Totally agree with Gus. It's a tough brutal sport. I agree high shots and head slams aren't on but the sin bins in that game were atrocious. Hargreaves and burgess probably deserved a rest but the other 5 were a joke. Its not hand bags at two paces. In a collision sport like rugby league accidents and head clashes are inevitable so play at your own risk and accept the consequences if any. And don't blame the game you played and loved and got paid big dollars for, for any future problems. Don't try and water it down just so people don't get hurt. That's the whole lure of the game. The Toughness, the skill, the fitness of these special athletes that play through pain and attrition make us go "wow !" Take out the legal brutality and soon we'll be left with touch footy. While former players developing early onset dementia is extremely sad, somewhere in the world every 3 seconds someone develops dementia. It is now the third biggest killer of Australians behind heart disease and cancer. I think there's more to it than head knocks from rugby league ! 🤔

There is so much I could criticise Gus for here but I'll just focus on one thing: the idea that a high tackle is either a penalty or a send off.
Why? Why is a high tackle either fairly innocuous and only worth a piggyback down field, or a horrifying crime that ends one or two players nights? That's what the sin bin is for, to fill the gap between a penalty and a send off. The Burgess hit on Tedesco is a perfect example. A penalty wasn't enough, but a send off would have been too harsh. THATS WHAT THE SIN BIN IS FOR. Gus is geriatric. He has allowed age to dull his brain. He's not the genius he used to be

If clubs or the NRL recommend players wear headgear (non compulsory) and players decline to wear it, this may be used as a legal defence against future compensation claims.

    • @AndrewLimNSSC
      @AndrewLimNSSC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Problem is, there is no safety gear that prevents a concussion. Headgear only stops cut and bruises to the head, but a concussion is where your brain is travelling and speed then suddenly decelerates i.e. hitting another object/player/ground. Even being hit a shoulder or chest height can cause concussion.

Latrell putting the ball on the ground after being tackled and waiting to be awarded a penalty. Guys like Ilias hold their neck after a tackle and delay playing the ball to milk a crusher tackle penalty, then spring to life on the next play. Okay, give him the penalty. And send him to the sideline to get checked for two minutes and play continues. That will stop this crap.

Actually watched a big game a couple of weeks ago and it went for an extra 40 mins due to stoppages. How much is media advertising making on this extra screen time and what is their input into decisions about rules behind closed doors. The attacking players will look to play the ref. They know any high shot will be a pen if they stay down it will be a sin bin. Attacking players will make sure to drop there bodies if they know they will be tackle chest high. Means the player tackling hand will go over the ball an onto there head. They stay down bunker looks at it in slow mo ( witch makes things look far worse ) tells the ref its on report an sin bin. The NRL along with the SL have done this. The refs are following the rules. RL is now like football. Players playacting to get a man yellow carded

JWH on Burgess was a deliberate foul and deserved the sin bin. Burgess on Tedesco was careless more than deliberate and also deserved the sin bin. Notably both Tedesco and Burgess failed their HIA. Radley volunteered to be sin binned when he ran in like a lunatic. The rest were pretty inconsequential.

A gladiatorial sport supported by legions of tribal fans. Rugby League is Rugby League. It is never going to be a safe sport, even with the new head knock rules. Gus is right, there will always be accidents. If this game is to be run by doctors and lawyers, then the pure essence of Rugby League will be totally diluted. Yes this game will destroy your body, including your brain, however players accept this occupational risk. Like Americans who enjoy their football, we are thrilled by the car crash like collisions, and feats of speed and strength. We love the displays of endurance, toughness and will to win. We love the comebacks, fightbacks, players playing with injury. God bless Rugby League.
