    Hi Scott, love seeing Gaston as we don't have any one in Aus like him except manufacturer reps showing tools , here is a tip, old school , with chisels get a 2 edge bash chisel , and if done tech use a oilstone not water because for 100years, no chippys needed them, its a gimmich , when going to sharpen chisel use oil o tormeck if bad and then strop edge on canvas or leather to polish steel , when you think is getting blunt , shazam restrop and becomes razor sharp again and only touch up edge if hit a nail etc.

    Old joiners tip re: sharpening stone. As a stone wears to a gentle hollow its not actually a bad thing. When you sharpen a hand plane blade it will slightly curve the blade. This means when you hand plane wider timber, the edges of the blade won't leave lines in the timber. After nearly 40 years of use my old stone is the perfect shape

    For a chisel that mottled you should grind it with the stone rotating towards you with the chisel facing into the rotation.. more aggressive. Also you can key the cutting stone with any chisel sharpening block.. A 640 diamond ezelap will take material off of your chisel 100x faster than the included tormek stone

  • @maclagor

    This demonstrates very well where carpentry really doesn't need you to know the fundamentals of woodwork at all. Its building work really. A sharp edge was vital in my training, knowing how to sharpen a chisel, how to take care of stones and alike, not just flick the on switch on the saw / nailer / sander. Scott didn't even add a secondary bevel to the chisel to get it actually sharp, just off the machine and ready to start bashing it again. People use the word craftsman alot these days to describe anyone with a tool. Care for quality work, sharp edges and considered joinery seems to be a dying art, speed + profit the only measures. Hand skills may seem on first glance defunct and you can certainly put things together without them, but that knowledge opens up a whole different world in terms of what you can do, where you can do it and ultimately, whether you are a craftsperson or just someone who has some tools and a power supply. How to sharpen a chisel with a waterstone and grinder is super basic in that regard. Not knowing these sorts of skills will always hold back the level one can work to and therefore how much one can actually charge for their skills.

    • @fieryinferno88
      @fieryinferno88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the point of sharpening a chisel to a razor point when its just going to dull immediately? Its a framing chisel, a beater. And scott said as much in the video. If he has Shapton stones then he probably has chisels that he brings to a razors edge. I have a set of chisels that is razor sharp for finish carpentry, a set for framing (not sharpened as often and not sharpened to a razors edge) and a couple true beaters that never get sharpened and get used when a chisel is needed (or handy) but I don't want to destroy any of my other chisels.
      As a side note, a secondary bevel is not really necessary for getting a sharp edge, even for woodworking. Since I can shave hair with my chisels, you'd have a hard time convincing me otherwise.

    From experience, when sharpening on a tormek (t4 or t8) and your chisel look like that. Stop sharpening a few times and use the set stone coarse side to the sharpening stone, just like you would use it for changing grit. The coarse set stone will cleen out slag and sharpening will be more effective. Same can be used for the higer grit setting stone. If that was my own chisel (and yes,i have banged up both chisel and axe like that) i would use a file first and then move to the tormek. Kul kanal😋, regards from Sweden.

    nice to see you and Gaston use the Swedish brands for axes and chisels .Like them to , god on you boys

      Beautiful axe but I hope they're a bit cheaper in Sweden. That Gränsfors is $557 from Gaston! At that price it's just a collector's art toy, there's no rational job use that "requires" that outlay.
      I have a few Swedish and German axes & log splitting mauls picked up from recycling centers for around $5-20 each. There is something very beautiful about the various shapes for function.

    I was having the same trouble with sharpening taking a long time. So I recently bought the black stone for the tormek t-8. Hopefully it will speed things up a little

    • @philwort1873
      @philwort1873 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does but if you really want to speed things up you buy the tormek bench grinder jig and you just do the bulk on the bench grinder and before you over heat the steel you switch to the water cooled and your jig is still set!

    For North Americans, HiKOKI is the Metabo takeover of Hitachi Koki. Similar tools in NA are called Metabo HPT.

    Those mitre clamps look handy.
    Sure there will be raised eyebrows but all my chisels get sharpened on a linisher these days keeps em cooler than a grinding wheel and takes no time at all.
    Finish em up on a stone

    I Noticed Gastons Hikoki had the smaller hook? Is that taken from the finisher or can you buy them?
