  • Stella Splendens is a song from the 14th Century Llibre Vermell, a book compiled to help pilgrims keep themselves appropriately entertained while they waited to visit the Black Madonna in Montserrat, Spain. It was considered appropriated for pilgrims to sing and dance, with decorum, in the church, so long as they did not disturb other worshippers.
This song and dance were recorded live during our performance of Echoes of Pilgrimage, 3rd December 2023, at Warrandyte Community Centre, Victoria, Australia.
'Echoes of Pilgrimage' was based around a historically informed fictional journal of a pilgrimage undertaken c.1520, from Canterbury in England to Rome in Italy, the Via Francigena, with additional visits to Walsingham (England) and Montserrat (Spain).
We performed song, music and dance associated with locations along the journey... with the occasional sprinkling of poetic licence.
The research and writing of the fictional pilgrim journal were undertaken by CAPV members Sally and David Ranson.
The Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria are an Australian performance group, comprising dancers formerly known as the Ripponlea Renaissance and Baroque dancers, and the Early Music Consort of Melbourne.

This is our own choreography, since there are no existing dance instructions from the time. Everyone has their own interpretation. It's a beautiful song, and fun to dance!

    Bravissimi tutti e tutte😊🎉❤
Cantori, musici e danzatrici e poi chiunque abbia collaborato alla realizzazione 😊
    Posso osare un suggerimento?
Anzi due, se posso permettermi :

Thank you for your kind words and your suggestions.
Our videos are just a sample taken from our live concert performances. The musicians also play solo items, when they are the main focus. However, they prefer not to appear too much in our videos. When we feature singers, they are the main focus, so they are placed in front.
We would love to use wooden stands for our backdrops, but unfortunately we do not have any, nor do we have much time to set up for our concerts as we hire the space by the hour. In an ideal world...!
Thank you again for your comments :)

This is true. We are a non-profit group and only have one collection of costumes, which span several decades. These videos are from our live concerts, and since we perform dances from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods in each concert, we compromise 🙂
