The Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria
Australia
We are an Australian non-profit Renaissance & Baroque dance performance group, based in Melbourne.
In 1978 Helga and Mark Hill formed the Early Arts Guild of Victoria, and its performance groups: the Early Music Consort of Melbourne and the Ripponlea Renaissance and Baroque Dancers, who for four decades delighted audiences in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria with their performances of historic European music and dance.
When Helga and Mark Hill retired in 2017, the remaining musicians and dancers resolved to continue independently as the Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria.
Since then, we have undertaken to proudly demonstrate Helga’s lifetime of work and dedication to bringing alive historic works from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods to the best of our ability. Now, as the group evolves, we have also begun to produce our own interpretations of extant written choreography, applying the skills and knowledge learned under Helga’s tutelage.

❤🎉Bravissimi!
This is true. We are a non-profit group and only have one collection of costumes, which span several decades. These videos are from our live concerts, and since we perform dances from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods in each concert, we compromise 🙂
This is our own choreography, since there are no existing dance instructions from the time. Everyone has their own interpretation. It's a beautiful song, and fun to dance!
@@tayarum6033 Thank you 🙂

Absolument!
I love that you're keeping history alive.
Thank you!
❤
I'm glad you like it!
Hi Jan! I remember you. Nice to see you still dancing.
I'll pass your comment on to her, Sue :)
@@thecourtlyartsperformers Thanks! A lovely lady!
The "guy" in black is my favorite dancer. As for being a guy, well I'm not so sure lol.
That would be Saskia 😀. (S)he is very talented, and can also be seen in another disguise in our Baroque dances!
@@thecourtlyartsperformers Thanks so much. Saskia dances beautifully and gracefully. She has a unique style and looks like she is having fun!
Indeed. The interpretation of medieval dances is based on educated guesswork. Fortunately, there are some pictures in manuscripts depicting dancing, and in many instances there are written versions of the music. We are not medieval specialists though. The first written evidence from the dance masters date from around 1460. Almost all of our performances are based on the written descriptions by the dance masters. Here is our explanation of our performance of the Tourdion (from the description below the video): The Tourdion first became popular in the Burgundian court around 1450. There is no existing choreography of the time, but according to Arbeau, the steps are similar to the galliard, but smaller and gentler in nature. The word 'tourdion' stems from the french 'tordre', meaning to twist. To echo these features, we chose to dance the Tourdion with gentle cinq pas steps and some dramatic changes of direction.
Bravissimi e leggiadri❤Se abitassimo vicini mi unirei a voi! 🎉
Thank you! Yes, we are a long way from everywhere, down here in Australia :D
Where and when is the concert?
You can find more information and how to book on our website here: www.courtlyarts.com/performances. We invite you to join us as we present a cornucopia of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque dance, music and song from the Royal Courts of England, Germany, Italy and France. Featuring the Courtly Arts Renaissance & Baroque dancers and musicians, with vocalists Sarah Amos & Natalie Maroki. All performers will be in full costume, and music will be played on period instruments. At the end of the concert, we invite you to meet the performers and take a closer look at the costumes and instruments. PLEASE NOTE: Bookings are essential for our Warrandyte Performance. All our previous concerts at this venue have booked out, so please book ASAP to avoid disappointment. We look forward to performing for you soon! 2 performances: Sunday 26th May 2024, 3pm The Victory Room, Warrandyte Community Centre, 168 Yarra Street, Warrandyte 3113 Sunday 2nd June 2024, 2pm Trinity Uniting Church, 15 Black Street, Brighton 3186
❤😊Ma che brave! 🎉
It should look spectacular in costume 🙂
❤Amerò vedere i costumi!
Whats that song called? Very lovely!
It's Quand je bois du vin clairet, by Pierre Attaignant.
This is very much Bayeux!
Did you enjoy it?
@@thecourtlyartsperformers Indeed, I did. It's amazing.
Will the sideless surcote also be making an appearance in the performance?
Sadly, no. It's a bit early for our repertoire. Jenn made it to wear at the Abbeystowe medieval faire, but wanted to try it's 'swishability' in this dance :D
I'm really looking forward to dancing this one 🙂
I think we all are!
Greased lightning galliard! What a workout ❤
Yes, if I remember correctly it was a tad faster than they were expecting 😅
awesome....men wanted, though.
😄 Always short of men! We actually now have 3 new male dancers (2024)! However, if Shakespeare could have all male actors, we reckon we're fine with mostly ladies 😀
@@thecourtlyartsperformers Yes, I know. Most Renaissance dance groups are always short of men! and regarding today's gender inclusion, that'd be fine
All the twirling makes the dresses look so beautiful! Well done!
Thank you! 😊
A fun dance in a lovely venue!
It is indeed :)
That's a pity. Did you enjoy the dances?
One of my favourites!
We love it!

I absolutely love this dance! 🥰
So glad!

How their kids laughed at them later.
:D Perhaps, although dancing was a necessary skill at Court in those times, so quite valued by all.
Think how racey and uncouth this was to older folk of that time. 😊
:D Have you seen La Volta?
I'm glad you like it :)
One of my favourite medieval melodies! And what I liked very much is that not only slim and slender women, but pumpkins too danced this dance!
I'm very glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for commenting. This is exactly how we feel when dancing.

Aw I wish I could do that
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
The music is medieval, but the dance was created by members of the Society for Creative Anachronism. It has become traditional among reenactors, but it is 20th century traditional.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. We credited the Lithuanian dance group in our description, as that is where we first saw this dance. I agree, as there is no existing choreography from the medieval period, any modern interpretations of medieval dances have to be considered as such.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
