    Absolutely splendid. Better than the muck people call dancing today. Even contemporary Classical ballet looks harsh and inelegant next to this. Even the frocks are lovelier.

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. This video was recorded live during our concert 'Echoes of Pilgrimage'. We made our choices of tempo and musical accompaniment based on the following explanation of the purpose of the Llibre Vermell by its compiler: "Because the pilgrims wish to sing and dance while they keep their watch at night in the church of the Blessed Mary of Montserrat, and also in the light of day; and in the church no songs should be sung unless they are chaste and pious, for that reason these songs that appear here have been written. And these should be used modestly, and take care that no one who keeps watch in prayer and contemplation is disturbed." We do love the lively traditional accompaniments of the modern day Farandole provençale, though!

    How can we know it was this way?

    • @thecourtlyartsperformers
      @thecourtlyartsperformers หลายเดือนก่อน

      We do not know. Dances earlier than those described in the first dance manuals c.1460 are just historically informed, modern interpretations. The Tourdion first became popular in the Burgundian court around 1450. There is no existing choreography of the time, but according to Arbeau's later description (Orchésographie, 1589), the steps are similar to the galliard, but smaller and gentler in nature. The word 'tourdion' stems from the french 'tordre', meaning to twist. To echo these features, we chose to dance the Tourdion with gentle cinq pas (galliard) steps and some dramatic changes of direction. :)

    I found your content only an hour ago and enjoyed it a lot - especially Saskia's performances (nice to have a name to the face) and I have to admit, together with the wonderful costumes she makes a mighty fine gentleman. I'm jealous. Do you have connections to a costume designer specialising in historical costume or do the dancers research and sew their costumes themselves?

    • @thecourtlyartsperformers
      @thecourtlyartsperformers หลายเดือนก่อน

      Awesome, thank you! Saskia is a very talented dancer. The majority of our costumes are part of the collection of our founder and patron Helga Hill. She made most of them herself, over the forty plus years she was the director of the group. We have since made a small number ourselves.

    Very interesting, and well done! Would this typically have been performed by a couple? I always try to envision the dances performed in candlelight, as they must been originally.

    • @GiovannaSessantaSei

      Apologies, the question about a couple was intended for the Pasacaille d’Armide. 🫢

    • @thecourtlyartsperformers
      @thecourtlyartsperformers หลายเดือนก่อน

      No problem. Rostiboli Gioioso was written for one couple, but we chose to dance it with two. Passacaille d'Armide, I believe, was written for a solo lady.

    What a beautiful performance! The music, the dance, the garments, just beautiful. She is so light on her feet, but graceful, and the dance has a happy, girly flair to it, thanks to the jumps and twirls and kicks. Very well done y'all, lots of love from Germany.

    The importance of dance during European history from the Middle Ages up until (maybe) the XIX century cannot be understated. During the Renaissance and Baroque period, any lady or gentlemen worth their name had to be proficient in quite a few different dances. And they must be good at it to boot, lest they would have been frowned upon or worse. It was a matter of utter social importance, not just a pastime. We always tend to idealize the "simpler" times of the past. Yet we fail to acknowledge just how complex they were and how intricate social norms and customs were. Some were even a matter of life and death, like the ritual of taking the hat off when meeting another person. A hat not taken off at the appropriate moment could make the other feel insulted and end up in a duel. There was a gigantic contrast between the courtly rituals of dance and the fact that most men would be able to kill you without a second of hesitation if they needed to. I find it enormously interesting and intriguing. Thanks for sharing, I loved it.

      Thank you for taking the time to write this very interesting comment. We have two programmes which would have been of particular interest to you, I think. We have playlists for both of them. In 'The European Courtier' we considered the work and travels of Baldassare Castiglione, and in 'The Etiquette of Dance' we based our concert around comments and advice from various dance masters of the Renaissance. It is a fascinating topic!

    I love having this as part of my cultural heritage. I used to look longingly at other cultures who actively practice their own music, dances and social rites, and I felt like I didn't have that. But I do! Centuries of documented practices that have evolved over time to produce a vast spectrum of traditions. So cool!
