This is awesome. I have to replace the rf wheel bearing on my Tracker. Didn't want to pay someone else to do it when I have friends with a press and needed tools. This looks easy to follow in conjunction with the manual for torque specs and such. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thank you internet!! Thank you robinsonsauto
Another great video, Will! You took your time and showed us how to do it step by step. Each of these are different so it's good to see how each model is done.
Thanks for the response! I ended up doing just that. pounded my big ol' screwdriver on the backside a few times. broke those suckers loose. now all I gotta do is wait for my wheel nut tool to get here. found one on egouge after driving all over town looking for one. :P
Excellent job of illustrating the process for replacing a bearing. I wish I had the press and the other tools needed to fix mine, or that you were willing to do it for me😉
I notice you like the anti seize compound, thats the first time I have seen it applied on the wheel studs as well as the caliper mounting bolts. Do you recommend this lube on all wheel nuts and caliper bolts ?
Hi, Great video, it helped me a lot! I got a question if you dont mind. As I was doing the job I found out that the halfshaft had a lot of play, I removed the spindle and found out it had a brass bushing in it, I removed the other side and there was a needle bearing... someone must have changed one of the spindles I guess... the one with the brass had a lot of play and the other with the needle bearing had less play... is that play normal? Can I remove the brass bushing and replace it with a bearing? I find it weird that the halfshafts have play inside the spindle... Thank you in advance for any help.
thanks for the instructions. I'm in the middle of doing mine right now. I would have one word of caution in getting the hub off...my bearings were quite rusted on. If you use a puller as you did, the only thing keeping the stub shaft in place is a snap ring. It would be easy to mess that up. The factory service manual says to use a slide hammer affixed to the wheel studs. I didn't have that, so I made one. I also made the spanner socket. from a large socket and steel dowel pins.
good question, this style bearing comes packed came as a complete unit however some styles like the ones that were in it (3 piece cone shape) most times don't therefore you will need to pack them
my 1997 tracker did not have the cap with philips head screws. it has a spring washer behind the nut. had to push each lock on the washer in one-at-a-time to loosen the nut.
Your welcome, Keep in mind the puller will apply more even pressure. a slide hammer will work however if its frozen your better off with a puller or your going to be beating for awhile it will go however a even pull is always better than beating just talking from past experiences. Your not going to damage the snap ring, you would pull the bolt threads first. its surprising the amount of pressure it takes to damage a snap ring or the retaining groove. Good tips though thank you
Hi @robinsonauto, about a decade late to the game here but can't find anything else nearly as helpful. A question on the washer you're installing around 20:50 -- I've noticed it is rounded on one side, flat on the other. My inclination is to install the rounded side against the bearing/race and the flat side will touch the spanner nut. Mine all fell apart when I took it apart and I don't remember the orientation as well as my service manual not even mentioning the washer at all! Any thoughts? Thanks!
do what i did and buy an impact screw driver, bought it at oreilly , its a screw driver that you tap with a hammer. Every time you tap it it rotates the screw under pressure, thus mostly eliminating a stripped screw. I had to use it on my camry idle air control that had brass screws that would not budge. It worked great for 12 bucks. hopefully this helps
I completely lost the bearing on the left driver side, and I have the new wheel hub with the bearing pressed in, but since it was forever since the bearings were replaced, I need the all the washer things, screws, and snap a ring. What is the kit called for all of those things?
So it won't just spin @ high revs? that's interesting. I have a good compressor & a good air ratchet that I thought about using, but I was worried about stripping those phillips heads. if I used my impact wrench, I know they would've been been toast! thanks for the info guys, your the best!
its a tight press fit you my be there awhile beating and my cause damage, if you noticed at one point while pressing the press started surging on off that cutoff was set at 10,000psi most shops will press it for you for a small cost...
came loos for me on this one, however, if your having issues try taking and whacking the back of the screwdriver with a hammer. as long as its not a cheepy lol give it a couple good hits continue tapping as you apply pressure and try to break the loose... now that i think about it you can probably see be doing that in fast motion when the clip sped through me removing them, guess in hindsight i should have played that part out. a impact screwdriver would be the correct tool
Would this be the same process as a 2000 Tracker? I watched another video looked like the guy took a lot more stuff off and made more work then needed to be done.
Are the geo's the same as a chevy tracker cause I have a tracker and it has a shake in the front end I think it might be coming from the wheel bearing but not sure not a car guy haha but the stearing wheel it self moves rite to left and I can hear a popping noise in the front end somewhere
Yep...the screws from what I hear are locktited in....and need to be warmed up with a torch...to remove them....then use the hammer impact tool with a phillips head...
From what I understand these bearing are what they call CRUSH bearings...and are not 3 pieces anymore....and you install the one piece bearing now..and torque it to at least 123 ft lbs...and continue to tighten the lock ring until the screw holes line up with the lock ring plate...but it HAS to be at least 123ft lbs torque or the bearing will fail in less than 1000 miles....
Gotcha. my mistake. I was real curious to learn more about an air tool I could trust in a situation like this. I know exactly which tool your talking about.
um, no to an air tool on this type of tool. This is a hand held screw driver that you strike manually with a hammer. As you tap/strike the tool it seats the phillips or regular bit into the screw head, thus seating the screw driver head against the screw itself while( and this is the key) turning the screw at the same time. Just check o reilly or another auto place or visit a utube channel . Once you see the tool in action you will understand what I am describing/
he didnt have the right socket, he used a punch and a hammer, but the socket is available on ebay for like 55 bucks, search "chevy tracker spindle nut socket" i mean honestly, " oh i accidentally turned off the camera right in the middle of the procedure, and turned it on immediately following this step that i stopped before"

On a 96 Geo Tracker a bad bearing will it make it feel like it's going sideways

Thanks for taking the time to present this video. Excellent information as always Will. Keep up the good work.
Will, thanks for doing another great video. How big is the press you use - 10T?

Tetrapex again, what spanner wrench socket did you use for the nut? I have two weeks to finish this brake job. D:
Do you happen to remember where you got the special spanner wrench tool from? Is it specific for trackers or universal?

Good Stuff !! My 1/2 in. impact bit the dust IR 2135 ,lasted me 8 years. Wondering what model your using and how you like it.
I completely lost the bearing on the left driver side, and I have the new wheel hub with the bearing pressed in, but since it was forever since the bearings were replaced, I need the all the washer things, screws, and snap a ring. What is the kit called for all of those things?
Awesome, good step by step guide. I guess this is impossible to do without a press?
So it won't just spin @ high revs? that's interesting. I have a good compressor & a good air ratchet that I thought about using, but I was worried about stripping those phillips heads. if I used my impact wrench, I know they would've been been toast! thanks for the info guys, your the best!
yes i believe it is a 10T i have the cutoff set to 10,000psi that's around 5T as you may have noticed at one point she was cutting in and out
its a tight press fit you my be there awhile beating and my cause damage, if you noticed at one point while pressing the press started surging on off that cutoff was set at 10,000psi most shops will press it for you for a small cost...
Hi, on 21:24 you say it should be torqued to 150 ft. lbs. Are you talking about the circular plate with many holes?
You didn't show it in your video, but what lbs did you torque the hub nut to?
came loos for me on this one, however, if your having issues try taking and whacking the back of the screwdriver with a hammer. as long as its not a cheepy lol give it a couple good hits continue tapping as you apply pressure and try to break the loose... now that i think about it you can probably see be doing that in fast motion when the clip sped through me removing them, guess in hindsight i should have played that part out. a impact screwdriver would be the correct tool
May I know the part number/ code of the bearing you used to replace the old one?
Sorry this was many years ago
Christ almighty! how do you break loose those 4 phillips head screws that hold the retainer ring on? mine are on SOLID!~
your welcome, thanks for the compliment
Would this be the same process as a 2000 Tracker? I watched another video looked like the guy took a lot more stuff off and made more work then needed to be done.
I don't own a press. Can the race be removed without a press?
What size spindle nut spanner socket did you use? I'm having a really hard time trying to find the size and part to take it off.
Are the geo's the same as a chevy tracker cause I have a tracker and it has a shake in the front end I think it might be coming from the wheel bearing but not sure not a car guy haha but the stearing wheel it self moves rite to left and I can hear a popping noise in the front end somewhere
are those roller bearings? the ones i get are ball bearings
So when doing the bearing... the one single bearing replaces both of the old ones..
thanks for the heads up. hopefully mine will be as simple as this one as my bearing exploded.
Does the bearing not have to be packed with grease?
could I use a punch and hammer to get the race out if i dont have a press?
My tracker is a 1995 and has the crushed type bearing not the standard wheel bearing do you have a video for doing that...???
Nice job 👍
Hey what size socket did you use for the spindle nut I can't find it anywhere
Nice work! great step by step vid
what size is the wheel bearing socket? I am having problems finding one
Don't they also come as a hub and assembly which would make it much easier
thank you very much sir
i cant think about other way explain it !
god bless you
thank you for the compliment
Question on a 96 Geo Tracker with a bad bearing where they make the tracker feel like it's going sideways
Exelent
Thank you my good man! just saved me $350!
Thank you Very good video.
Yep...the screws from what I hear are locktited in....and need to be warmed up with a torch...to remove them....then use the hammer impact tool with a phillips head...
like that press what kind is it
You are great. Thank you so much
nice press
Excelente
wow i never needed a puller. is that normal?
Take your old race and grind some of the outside so when, you use it to press in New bearing it won't get stuck.
What size are the bolts you used to remove the rotor? Are they metric?
castirondude m8×1.5

Gotcha. my mistake. I was real curious to learn more about an air tool I could trust in a situation like this. I know exactly which tool your talking about.
Great video.
Anyone know where to get the seals?
thanks, works great
thank you
yea you need a press of some sort don't need to be anything fancy
I cannot believe the torque spec for the wheel bearing is 150ft ilb!!

Bearing number?
yea

i wish someone would make a roller bearing for geo's .
J-37763 part number into google
First two links dont go with the ebay one it's garbage.
ab
Talking for nothing
Awesome video!
You are great. Thank you so much
