It was only a short stay unfortunately, we are planning another trip to the Highlands in summer. Any recommendations to stop off at? Apologies for the pronunciations, I tried my best 🤣
Excellent vlog guys, well explained and some great tips. I was up in Scotland 🏴 last week and was lucky to see parts of this amazing country and do part of the NC500. I loved it so much I will return in the next few weeks to complete the journey.
Just back from doing the NC500. We did the route anticlockwise starting in the east. Went to most of the places shown here. It is absolutely beautiful (we preferred the west coast). Our weather was great. Thanks for sharing this video.
Went to Scotland last summer and loved it! Can’t wait to go back and spend more time in the Highlands. Your video was great!! A perfect summary of your week. What time of year were you travelling in?
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! We will be going the end of August next year from Canada. I have now added several "must see" places after watching this. Your route maps are VERY helpful. Your favourite drive from Ullapool to Gairloch Sands just can not fit our itinerary which is frustrating as we need to catch the ferry to Lewis.
Thank you Grant. Believe it or not we are currently in Canada for the first time at this very moment. Just stepped off a plane from Toronto to Calgary, we cannot wait to explore more of your amazing country. It’s a shame about the drive from Ullapool but there’s still plenty you will see and enjoy. If you need any help when you get here next year drop us a message!! Take care 😀
@@danandmarissa I guess it's a small world after all! I was born in Calgary 75 years ago when it was 80% smaller. After I wrote you this morning I found I just HAD to travel that route so I spent the next 2 hours working out how to do it so that the rest of the itinerary would only be slightly changed and I WAS SUCCESSFUL! I assume you are going to travel the Banff-Jasper highway as that is THE most scenic road in all of Canada. I am a retired Geography teacher and have driven most of our country so if there is anything I can help you with, just ask. How long are you on the west side of Canada? We live outside of Vancouver (a place we have only been to twice in 18 months due to Covid - our effort to stay safe). Enjoy your stay here and be prepared for ANY weather. Cheers, Grant
@@grantw7 thank you so much Grant that very kind of you! We are here for just a few days then we are heading to Vancouver! I’m glad your all sorted with the Planning. I’m sure your going to love Scotland and the highlands. 😄
Have done this route for almost 60 years on a motorbike, at that time roads were empty, but having fished in Canada on the Fraser River stay in Chillawack what a wonderful country Canada is,favourite place I have ever visited, love from Scotland
We downloaded the NC500 app. As you travel the route it tells you what to see and where to go with tons of information and helpful tips. We went in October missing the midges and a lot less people.
Always feel sad having done the NC 500 fully a few times and the west side many many times before it became a recognised route when the weather doesn’t play ball. Under blue sky it’s absolutely stunning I’ve had a good few magical long weekends with good company driving some of the best roads one year we had seventeen cars in our party ( fun filling up at stations as it was like chaos had descended ) . Glad the weather improved. Did the west side to Tounge seven years in a row with friends on road trips. Changed days when I first done the route twenty years ago you couldn’t buy petrol on a Sunday as everything was shut for the sabbath. You didn’t do the the boat trip at the Cave? That’s a miss. Yeah the choc place opened a few years back, it’s like drinking pure chocolate because it is😁. I’ll forgive the pronunciations especially the Kylesku bridge. 😂 You didn’t manage Applecross pass 😢 understandable in a motor home but wow what a road.
Hahaha thank you so much for your comment. It was our first time together in Scotland. We were blown away with the place when the sun was out. As for the Boat. I think Covid had stopped them at the caves. I could be wrong. The pronunciation 😂 we can only apologise. Thank you again for the comment. 😄
Thanks for the inspiring video! You've given us lots of great ideas. We're planning a NC500 motorhome trip for September and October. It seems you had your whole trip planned well in advance. We enjoy the freedom of being able to change itineraries based on weather and serendipity of learning about new possibilities, but you need to balance that with having access to facilities to top off/empty tanks. What's your advice about booking campsites in advance at that time of year?
Hi Matthew, not too sure about later in the year for availability of campsites. We were quite early in the year and things were just starting to get busy and even then some of the main places we wanted to stay were booked in. Maybe just book 2 or 3 guaranteed stops and then you have the flexibility from there. I think you will always have options especially at that time, it’s just if you 100% had your heart set on a certain site. That’s when I’d book. 😊
If I was to do it again I would leave out the east and north coast all together, it’s harsh, cold and Barron. Not much to see! My advice would be to start in the trossachs and head all the way north to Durness, I’d recommend including the isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis into your trip. There is so much to see that what you miss on the way up you can see on the way back.
Getting so excited. We’ll be there in October travelling from Australia 🇦🇺 This vid is perfect to plan our timing - seeing the sights and places to stay. Great job guys. 👏
That’s amazing. All the way from Auz to the tip of the UK. I hope you have the best holiday. Scotland and the Highlands especially is worth the flight time. Have a fantastic time! Safe journey 🙂
@@danandmarissa Certainly will have a great time. Thx heaps for the well-wishes. My great grandparents lived in Dunfermline. Their house is still there. So we’ll see this on the way. We were going to do the NC500 in May 2020 but trip was cancelled. 🥲 At last our borders have freed up. Cheers guys.
We still haven’t ventured across to your side of the world yet. So much of Australia that looks amazing. Marissa has family over there and we always promise to visit but never have got round to it. Maybe sometime soon!
Nice content, I was wondering if skipping the East Coast, and spend more time on the West Coast and Isle Of Skye would be wise? My wife and I will be in the UK for 3 weeks, and we’ll be in Scotland for the final week.
This video is great! We're going end of June for 10 days and hoping to roughly follow this guide with the campsites etc. Only thing you didn't really mention was facilities, how did you find it or did you have toilet/shower in the camper?
Hi Elise, We had a toilet and shower in the camper van but we tried to use the facilities at the sites as much as we could. It was just a lot more convenient. It’s the first time we had ever hired a motor home so we were new to it all. When we used the shower in the van that would use nearly all our water supply even for just a really quick shower. We filled up each day at the site before leaving and by the time we got to our next stop we would of used around 2/3’s of our water supply. We hooked up our van to the electric at each campsite every night also to keep the batts charged but apparently they would last a couple of days without re-charging. All the stops we booked had showers and toilet blocks on site. None of them were bad and most had facilities to wash pots and things like that after cooking in the motorhome if ya didn’t want to use the sink on the van. The Loch Ness stop off was by far the best one, really lovely site. (Loch Ness Shores) Hopefully this is helpful, let us know if there’s anything else! 🙂
Thank you 😀 We hope you have a great time! We really loved it up there. Hopefully the weather will be good for you. Have a great time guys!! Take care 😊
Hi both, my name is Shaun and I am going to tour Scotland for the whole month of May next year with my trusty Labrador Ruby. Really enjoyed your insight into the NC500 and will definitely go looking for the waterfalls. I have a Volkswagon T5.1 that has been converted and I was intending to wild camp most of the time as Ruby is pretty anti social with other dogs. Loves humans hates canines. Is wild camping possible? Will have a solar shower so hopefully we wont smell too bad. Was there anything you didn't take that you wish you had? plus what 1 thing to take is essential. I'm hoping to walk parts of the West Highland Way also on this trip. The motivation for the trip is I love Scotland plus I had a major stroke in my cerebellum in June and I need to plan a trip. I am making a good recovery, but if I'm honest I'm still coming to terms with what happened as I have always been fit and active and the stroke came from out of the blue. So time for me to take the bull by the horns and go exploring the North Coast of Scotland. I was planning to go to the Isles of Harris and Lewis and get the ferry to Ullapool, so I will most probably go the opposite way around as I also want to walk Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms. if you have any tips or advice I would love to hear from you. Best wishes, Shaun.
S P RACING FIRST of all Shaun best wishes for a speedy recovery. That's some trek, outer Hebrides nc500 & the Cairngorms, give yourself as much time as possible, TO GOOD TO RUSH.🏴🏴🏴🏴
Hi Shaun, great to hear from you and Sorry for late reply. Your so lucky to be able to tour the whole of Scotland in May next year! I’m sure you and ruby will have the best time together. I think you will be fine wild camping, it’s different rules to England and you should be able to find plenty of stops along your trip. Maybe just book in to a few campsites throughout the month to refuel your van. We were pretty kitted out for the trip and the campsites we stopped at filled most our needs. The only advice on kit would be keep waterproofs in your back pack as the weather can change from hour to hour, regardless of watch the weather apps say. Good walking boots also. I’m sorry to hear about your stoke, I’m sure it was a really difficult time in your life but I’m glad you’ve taken on a challenge and not let the stroke control you! That’s a very brave move. Our main tip would be space out your time more than we did, which you shouldn’t have a problem with. There is so much to see and if you try and cram it all in 1 week you will miss so much. We only scratched the surface of The highlands, let alone Scotland. Enjoy the west coast, that’s some of the most beautiful natural landscapes we’ve ever seen, we really wasn’t expecting it to be that good. Other than that, just enjoy your trip! We hope the weather is on your side and that you have an amazing experience! Keep us posted! Dan and Marissa 🙂
Hi Matty, there are plenty on fuel station dotted around but as mentioned don’t let your camper run too low. On the odd stretch there isn’t a station for some miles! Have a great time, I’m sure you’ll love it.
We're hoping to do the NC500 this coming May but are thinking of bringing along my 90-year old mother 😁. Other than the waterfalls are most of the attractions close to the road? By the way, thanks for the video. Some great information.
Hiya, If I’m honest the best part of the trip is the driving. We spent hours everyday in the Motorhome just driving. It’s so beautiful. We didn’t really do any long walks. Most of the beach’s are a stones throw from a car park and the main castle attractions have parking really close. I honest think she will have a wonderful time with you 😊
I’ve done this a few times but I would recommend avoiding East Coast not really much going on. All the dramatic scenery and action is on the West Coast in my opinion at least :)
A williams Rather a disingenuous comment, the charms of the east coast, may fall short of the fabulous west coast, but it is a lovely area well worth taking detours of the a9
Beautiful, simply beautiful. Your video is very helpful. Appreciate it. Question Will sedan cars be alright for NC500? Are there hotels along the way (for those who do not have camper van) to check in?
Hello! Yes cars will be absolutely fine, 95% of the drive is really easy pleasant driving nothing to worry about at all. The other 5% you should be fine in a car if not there will be a notice before you enter the roads letting you know it’s not fit for large vehicles. You will have plenty of notice if you still don’t feel confident and want to avoid those tight roads. Plenty of lovely hotels along the way round the route. Just book as early in advance as you can! ☺️ hope this is helpful.
Hi, Oh dear; I am a nearly 80 year old pensioner and I am planning to do it early next year in a motorhome, on my own apart from one & a half dogs (one big & one small!!) . . . . should I be worried?? Not.
Hi guys, love your video on the NC500, I did this road trip between the first to lockdowns of Covid in October 2020 and really enjoyed every second. I notnoticed that you had a camper van, did you drive the Applecross Pass? Look forward to hearing back from you.
Just read some of the great comments on your video, sorry guys that you already commented on the Applecross Pass question. as you have not done this part of the road, it is very tight and narrow in places to drive especially in a motor home, at one point I had to reverse for a while to let them pass me. If you can it's best to do this in a car.
@@Morganpo haha after we got very close to being stuck further north in the route we decided to give that bit a miss 😂 It wasn’t a pleasant experience driving a camper down those tight roads, especially after being warned by the signs haha. We are looking at going back up again this year at some point and doing just the north coast, again in a camper.
@@danandmarissa great, good luck and enjoy. I'm planning in doing the whole route again this year also as I missed a few areas as I had a sports injury preventing me to do alot of walking. Anyway enjoy.
Morning Jan, We would of loved to have spent more time doing the NC500 but with work commitments we could only spend a week. I hope your trip was brilliant.
Hi Dan & Marissa: I really enjoy your video, my husband and I are traveling to Scotland and I find this itinerary amazing, a good chance to feel the real Scotland. We are arriving at Edinburgh on July 10th, and want to leave 3 days at the end for Edinburgh, it's our first visit to Scotland. We are from Argentina so we are not used to driving with the wheel on the other side, do you think we will find it very stressing? Can it be crowded during July? At what time of the year you did this trip. I'm concerned about mist and fog.
Hi, Only 2 days until your holiday! we travelled in May and the roads were fairly quiet. It’s not quite the school holidays either so you shouldn’t hit the main holiday period. Just take the driving slow and steady, follow the signed and down drive down the narrow roads unless your in a car! Have a great holiday 😊
Again the guy from Austria with another question - I was a little shocked to hear that you were not able to book campsites Even 6 weeks in advance and in June.😮 Would you recommend to book all the spots in advance or just special locations ? This pre booking is completly contrary to our way of travelling by motorhome. Thanks
Please fire away with questions 🙂 There’s should be plenty of choice of campsites still available but the best ones sell out quickly. If you have your heart set on certain locations I would advice to book as early as you can. Then maybe just leave a few days for adventure and spontaneity. I hope this helps.
¡Lo siento, nos perdimos este comentario! Estamos pensando en viajar por el norte de España el próximo año, ¿hay algún lugar o época del año que recomendaría? Gracias de nuevo. 😃😃
Hi Stu and Sue, Where would you recommend we visit when we next do the NC500? I think we are going to need longer than a week next time. Hope your both well ☺️
Just watched your video after doing the NC500 myself last week. Loved your video and seeing some places I didn't manage to see. Walligoe Steps are a must, they are just before Wick. One of those places that aren't signposted and if you didn't know about them before hand, you'd have no idea.
Cant believe you didn't say anything about the best part of the NC500 the Torridon, Shieldaig(my home) and Applecross area you get the best Shellfish in Shieldaig bar and costal kitchen and the road from shieldaig to AppleX is the steepest road in the UK the Bealach Na Ba (the pass of the cattle)
We didn’t have enough time to finish the final part of the route.. but we are booking to return in July this year and just stick to the west coast! Is Bealach Na Ba the really tight road, famous for campers getting stuck?
Hiya mate, I used a free programme on my iPad called sketch.. the logo for the programme Is just the tip of a pencil.. I tried for a full day to use after affects but I just couldn’t get to grips with it. These took me around 1 minute to make. Hope that’s useful for you 😊

Hi Simone, we went the very last week of May 2021, which is the last week of spring in the UK. Overall the weather was pretty good for us and the route was quiet. Hope this helps 😊
@@danandmarissa thank you very much! We were thinking to go there in August with our camper van but we heard that in summer is pretty packed. Have you got any advice for us?
@@SimoneFolador usually the weather is good in May, June time. July, August should be peak summer for us in the UK but it’s hit and miss. The kids break up from school at the middle of July so it will be busier from then till around the start of September. If we were to go again it probably would be June time!
A really great video. I am planning to do the NC500 at the end of August and I have taken on board some of your tips. What did you use to put the video together. I would like to make a video of my photos and videos. Thanks.
Hi Alison, thank you for your comment. I use an app called LumaFusion on my iPad but it also works on the IPhone, it’s really simple to use. If you have a MacBook there is IMovie built in for free. Hope that helps 😊
@@danandmarissa Great, thanks. This is the answer I was looking for. Really enjoyed your trip, very inspiring. I'll just take a cheap tent so if there is no room at the Inn I'll just pitch up. Thanks 👍
Was it a condition of hire to use campsites, rather than wild camp? I use campsites, but I also wild camp. As the current rate, Scotland won't be worth visiting as its going to be as bad as Wales and England.
@@danandmarissa it's super safe to wild camp.. You might get the odd horn toot, or a Warden around the Loch Lomand areas, which many now avoid, or use campsites. Last year I spent two months in France, and because of crime towards MHs, and campervans, there were regions that I didnt visit. This is mainly the South Coast, and the Western end of the Med. Also, it's well dodgy along the North Spanish Atlantic coast. It's almost as if the local police turn a blind eye to tourist attacks, because the police move people on, and fine them, but they never catch the highway robbers. At the end of the day, no matter where you travel, bar Scotland, the police, & organised crime, and local regimes, they are all in collusion to rip off wild campers in vans and MHs. I've no idea what you're doing now, but Vanlife is the way to go, but don't go to or do what the big channels do. Less space in a large panel van, but still better than a MH. But that's another story.
@@danandmarissa unfortunately, Scotland is going the way of Wales and England. The Scottish elite has failed to provide the required service. Travel the NC500, and you find shit and toilet paper. Most of this comes from car driving tourists, even Scottish tourists. It's easy to blame campervaners and MHs. If you see Europe on one wing, and England and Wales on the other, Scotland is going to be like Wales, a total lockdown.
Sick and tired of reading about the NC500. We did "it" about 10 years ago before all the publicity and enjoyed a peaceful and quiet trip in the middle of summer. All this "promotion" just ruins it. Can people not make up their own itineraries or do they need to be "told" where to go. We know lots of places in Scotland and the rest of the UK that are still unspoiled but will keep them to ourselves. Why we need all this hype is beyond me and don't get me started on all the other copycat tours now appearing.
@@danandmarissa cheers, coming from Germany via Rotterdam into Hull. Visiting some old military friends on the way up. Going to be a great Motorcycle Trip
@@danandmarissa Ignore the Frisp, bitter and twisted for sure ! Campers up there have been tarnished by the odd few emptying their portaloos down drains etc. Majority dont but some do.I've gone up in a variety of vehicles, campers, motorbikes and car. I stealth camp now ...park anywhere and theres lots of places to do that on route, use public toilets and basically rough it for the week, use the campsites just for showers . Good informative 1st trip video tho

Excellent vlog guys, well explained and some great tips. I was up in Scotland 🏴 last week and was lucky to see parts of this amazing country and do part of the NC500. I loved it so much I will return in the next few weeks to complete the journey.
Glad you had an amazing time in Scotland mate! Did you end up going back on the return journey?
Recapping was really helpful
Thank you, glad to hear it! 😃
So far this video is the best showing great sceneries of Scotland. I want to know if we need to pay cash to most restaurants?
Hi Kay,
Most restaurants take card, even the most remote ones had internet and phone signal 😊
Great video, we did the NC500, anti clockwise and seen some wonderful scenery
It’s an amazing route! We can’t wait to visit again! 😄
Great video. Thanks. Greetings from Denmark.....
Hello from Manchester Uk 😁
hope your well!
Just back from doing the NC500. We did the route anticlockwise starting in the east. Went to most of the places shown here. It is absolutely beautiful (we preferred the west coast). Our weather was great. Thanks for sharing this video.
I’m glad you had a great time!! How was the weather for you?
@@danandmarissa We were very fortunate with the weather. It was sunny but not too hot. Got to see everything in all its beauty!

It really makes us happy that this is actually useful to somebody!!

I m doing it anticlockwise in a few months
Have a great trip Alan! Keep us posted!! 😊
We’ll look out for this app next time we go! Thanks Mark!

Hi Matthew,
not too sure about later in the year for availability of campsites.
Wow great video! Got me inspired to plan my own itinerary.
What time of year did you go?
Hi Stuart, we went 2021 in May 😊
Nice content,
I was wondering if skipping the East Coast, and spend more time on the West Coast and Isle Of Skye would be wise?
My wife and I will be in the UK for 3 weeks, and we’ll be in Scotland for the final week.
This video is great! We're going end of June for 10 days and hoping to roughly follow this guide with the campsites etc. Only thing you didn't really mention was facilities, how did you find it or did you have toilet/shower in the camper?
Hi Elise,
We had a toilet and shower in the camper van but we tried to use the facilities at the sites as much as we could.
(Loch Ness Shores)
Hopefully this is helpful, let us know if there’s anything else! 🙂
We’re doing the nc500 next month

I think you will be fine wild camping, it’s
different rules to England and you should be able to find plenty of stops along your trip.
Hi there, going up in August. So looking forward to it. In a hired campervan. Whats the fuel situation like? ❤
Hiya,
If I’m honest the best part of the trip is the driving. We spent hours everyday in the Motorhome just driving. It’s so beautiful. We didn’t really do any long walks. Most of the beach’s are a stones throw from a car park and the main castle attractions have parking really close.
I honest think she will have a wonderful time with you 😊
Check out St kilda definitely a must
We can’t wait to return next year and try there and the Isle of Sky!
Hope your well 🙂
You missed Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield and Fort George near Inverness.
That scenic route to lochinver was something else, the new tarmac only made it worse
We particularly loved the west coast of the route. It was unbelievably beautiful.
Hi, this is a great vlog! What time of year did you head off on the NC500? 😊
Hiya Molly,
We went in May, we had a good mixture of weather and no midges! 😊
Great video and so informative, thank you :for the tips -)
How do you design the route on the map ? (Showing here in red)
I’ve done this a few times but I would recommend avoiding East Coast not really much going on. All the dramatic scenery and action is on the West Coast in my opinion at least :)
Now we’ve been and done the route I would agree, if you’re short on time or just want the best, go west! 🙂
A williams Rather a disingenuous comment, the charms of the east coast, may fall short of the fabulous west coast, but it is a lovely area well worth taking detours of the a9
Beautiful, simply beautiful. Your video is very helpful. Appreciate it.
Question
Will sedan cars be alright for NC500?
Are there hotels along the way (for those who do not have camper van) to check in?
Hello!
Yes cars will be absolutely fine, 95% of the drive is really easy pleasant driving nothing to worry about at all.
The other 5% you should be fine in a car if not there will be a notice before you enter the roads letting you know it’s not fit for large vehicles. You will have plenty of notice if you still don’t feel confident and want to avoid those tight roads.
Plenty of lovely hotels along the way round the route. Just book as early in advance as you can!
☺️ hope this is helpful.
What about Bearlach Na Da to Applecross - were you too scared of driving it??
After we nearly got stuck… yes
Hi, Oh dear; I am a nearly 80 year old pensioner and I am planning to do it early next year in a motorhome, on my own apart from one & a half dogs (one big & one small!!) . . . . should I be worried?? Not.
Hi guys, love your video on the NC500,
I did this road trip between the first to lockdowns of Covid in October 2020 and really enjoyed every second.
@@Morganpo haha after we got very close to being stuck further north in the route we decided to give that bit a miss 😂
It wasn’t a pleasant experience driving a camper down those tight roads, especially after being warned by the signs haha.
We are looking at going back up again this year at some point and doing just the north coast, again in a camper.

Did you have to get the motor home back to Manchester in the 7 days?
We spent 3 weeks doing this route, didn't you find it rushed doing it over 7 days. There are some destinations that need a longer look.
Morning Jan,
We would of loved to have spent more time doing the NC500 but with work commitments we could only spend a week.

Hi,
Only 2 days until your holiday!
we travelled in May and the roads were fairly quiet. It’s not quite the school holidays either so you shouldn’t hit the main holiday period.
Just take the driving slow and steady, follow the signed and down drive down the narrow roads unless your in a car!
Have a great holiday 😊
Great Information - which months you did the Tour ?
Hi Gerhard.
We visited in June. The weather was 50/50 all week.
Thanks - we will do next May / June. Hope to have same weather ratio as yours.
Again the guy from Austria with another question - I was a little shocked to hear that you were not able to book campsites Even 6 weeks in advance and in June.😮
Would you recommend to book all the spots in advance or just special locations ? This pre booking is completly contrary to our way of travelling by motorhome. Thanks
Please fire away with questions 🙂
There’s should be plenty of choice of campsites still available but the best ones sell out quickly.
If you have your heart set on certain locations I would advice to book as early as you can. Then maybe just leave a few days for adventure and spontaneity.
I hope this helps.

Just watched your video after doing the NC500 myself last week. Loved your video and seeing some places I didn't manage to see. Walligoe Steps are a must, they are just before Wick. One of those places that aren't signposted and if you didn't know about them before hand, you'd have no idea.
Thanks Rachel, we’re excited to re-visit the highlands and try all the new places we have been recommend.
Glad you enjoyed your NC500 trip. 😊
Nice. I like it. What Animation software do you use for route planning?

Hahaha. Your not the first to make a comment on the glasses!
Was it a condition of hire to use campsites, rather than wild camp? I use campsites, but I also wild camp. As the current rate, Scotland won't be worth visiting as its going to be as bad as Wales and England.
No it wasn’t a condition. It was the first time us doing something like this so we kept it safe.
In what respect do you mean won’t be worth visiting?
Learn about Scottish history, also learn Scot’s language. 🤨
Thanks! 😊
How the hell do people like you afford to spend so much time travelling all over the world … maims money from your you tube videos,,??
Just saved our money Chris. No magic money pot unfortunately.
