My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ TH-cam. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of TH-cam I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on TH-cam won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

My sister would have probably passed out. She had a HUGE crush on Davy Jones.
They are the original manufactured boyband. Created for a TV show. But they were shockingly good. You need to review “Last Train to Clarksville.”
They started out as a manufactured band, by no one counted on their talent and starting with their third album “Headquarters” they became a really great band.
They had great songwriters.

I was a kid in the 60s. The Monkees had a 30 minute slapstick comedy show every Saturday morning and they would introduce a new song also.
One of the goofiest shows ever. Loved the Benny Hill style fast forward segments.
They also had a movie called Head, that was WAY weird.
well, it was originally at night. the saturday morning thing was years later, in syndication.
The show was originally on every Monday night. My older brother and I watched every episode. If you were watching it on weekend mornings, you were watching reruns.
Last train to Clarksville is another hit of their's you would like.
And it would give him a taste of what Mike brought to the table.

The Monkees are Pop/Rock. They are underrated by most people but they are quite good.
Or, you could say that they're overrated by a lot of people and they really suck. Sorry, I'm not usually this contentious, these guys just really strike a nerve with me.

Try "Pleasant Valley Sunday", a song written by Carol King about everyday life in suburbia.
Some things haven’t changed. I think about this song as I watch my neighbors obsess about their lawns....

American band, maybe, but its vocalist was a Brit. Therefore the band was one quarter British.

Actually they BECAME talented artist. The only one that had ANY musical experience before the show was Peter Tork. The rest LEARNED as they went. The first year all the tracks were played by studio musicians, and the Monkees didn't actually play (they mimed playing). As time went on though, they each learned to play.

Davy was such a teen heartthrob, as well he should have been. So adorable with a charming personality. The Monkees were considered lightweight at the time, but their catalog is quite amazing and they became very experimental. Some wonderful works in their large catalog.
Davy was nominated for a Tony for his part as the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver on Broadway. He performed on the same episode as The Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show.
As a young teen Davy was an athlete, a horse jockey!

Back in the day, this kind of music was considered Pop/Rock. In more recent years it has been referred to as Bubblegum Pop. It was definitely a more innocent time in a lot of ways. Whatever you call it, it's still great music!

Wow. When I was 12 yrs old I got my first record player for Christmas and all 4 Monkee albums. I was a happy girl in love with lead singer Davey Jones. Teen mag photos everywhere. So fun.
Their TV show is as good with all their songs back then in them.
Hey James The Monkees were a tv show way back in the late 60s and was on reruns for years they were quirky and extremely funny and the show just campy and silly. James, you should be sure to watch one of the Monkees tv show episodes you will be laughing. They did play instruments and do the singing and had some great songs. They reunited and went out on tour in the late 80s were super successful. Generations of people love them. Enjoy!

I had a crush on Davy Jones when I was a teen. I'm 63 now. Davy was singing and he had such a cute English accent.

Believe or not it's called bubble gum music. They were the ORIGINAL BOY BAND put together for t.v. the thing was that they were VERY GOOD! They were not allowed to play their own instruments until they revolted and got to play. Look at the opening of the t.v. show. That crowd at the concert is REAL! Almost Beatles status for a time. They were also Marcia Brady's favorite band and she is the fan club PRESIDENT of Davy Jones who sings daydream beleaver. Thank you for this wonderful reaction. Check out last train to Clarksville. Love the Davy Dance! Davy Jones (David Bowie's original name was David Jones - had to change his name because the name was already taken by Davy) passed away from a sudden heart attack. Michael Nesmith's (knit cap) mother invented Liquid Paper and Michael himself was instrumental in the development of MTV, it was a very innovative idea to make a channel devoted to music videos, but he didn't want to deal with running a whole network. Micky Dolenz (blue shirt, tambourine - he's always been my favorite Monkee!) was a child actor, he played the title role in a TV show called Circus Boy. Peter Tork (the other guy on the piano) has also passed away. Michael & Micky are the only two Monkees left.

a recorded song that was in the tv show. Their story is very interesting, the auditions for the show, and them hanging out at parties with big time music groups of that time period. They were loved!
The songwriter, John Stewart, (one-time member of the Kingston Trio, & writer/singer of "Gold") is an undervalued American Treasure.
Davy Jones, the singer, was the youngest and first to die. He was also the only British member and was a broadway actor (the artful dodger in Oliver!) and was nominated for a Tony award.
Axl Rose has the same dance move in I believe Sweet Child of Mine. Wonder where got his moves from.
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith uses these moves as well.

Pleasant valley Sunday is soothing
The Monkees were a pop-rock group. The Monkees were originally created for a TV show. The show's producers were trying to cash in on Beatlemania (Beatlemania was the over-the-top, ecstatic fanaticism surrounding the Beatles), so the producers found four guys who resembled the Beatles with mop-top hair styles and wrote Beatle-like pop songs for them to sing. Ironically, at the time, the Beatles themselves had outgrown their loveable mop-top pop-band image and started to become more complicated and psychedelic in their songwriting.

What the other commenters have written about the Monkees being pop or bubblegum is 100% correct. It was music that was aimed at the pre teen and young teen market. Ironically, the Monkees were the victims of their own success. They were a manufactured band meant to be featured in a musical comedy TV show and for about a year and a half they were one of the hottest things going and they sold boat loads of singles and long playing albums. But then something changed in 1967. The Monterey Pop festival brought Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Who into the spotlight and at the same time the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper and the Doors had a smash hit with Light My Fire. As a result, the Monkees' older fans left them and latched on to the new psychedelic and acid rock. During the run of the TV show Mike Nesmith, who was a talented song writer and musician was frustrated because he did not get the recognition he deserved as a musician and song writer and bassist Peter Tork who was also an accomplished musician was never given the chance to utilize his talents. The band finally convinced the record company to let them play their own instruments and be a real band with a harder edge to their music but it was too late because their image as a teenie bopper bubble gum band was etched in stone. When they decided to end their collaboration they did it in the form of a movie called "Head" that was surrealistic but it got the message across that the Monkees as we knew them was dead. Fortunately time has a way of healing wounds and beginning in the 1980s they joined the nostalgia circuit and started touring again with a full compliment of backup musicians. Davey Jones and Peter Tork have since passed away but they all lived long enough to have the chance to relive the glory days of the 1960s with fans who enjoyed and appreciated them. Mike Nesmith was finally given the credit as a songwriter that was long overdue, Peter Tork was able to spread his musical wings, and the fans who were now in their 30s and 40s were able to sing along with songs that had been echoing in their head since they were 13 years old. RIP Davey Jones and Peter Tork and thank you for the musical memories.

(These guys were the "pre-fab Four", a play on the Beatles' "A Hard Days Night". They did end up playing their own written songs and played on later albums. They were a television show to begin with. They had talent that the music producer never let them use.

monkees were before my time but were on syndication in my childhood. i love them still. the bubble gum rock is not typical of the music i grew into but definitely has a special place in my heart.

Oh my word!!!! My teeny bopper years! I loved loved Mickey (drummer). They had a tv show. When it was on I threatened my little brother with bodily harm if he even came in the room. Only 2 of them left. I’m now 66 years old but I still recall how I felt when I heard their music I remember the posters all over my walls!! Did I dance?? Oh yes!!
60s Pop. They where a TV show that had some really good songs. This was before my time but I enjoy the simple positive music. Some of their other hits are: (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone, Last Train To Clarksville, A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I'm A Believer (original), Monkee's Theme, and Listen To The Band.

it's pop music. They were brought together to be a TV show about a fun rock group. They learned and then toured being quite popular with the "teeny boppers" who watched the show and those that were older and realized that they had a good thing going with their music. They still make me smile. I appreciate you doing them. Lots of fun songs for the show that turned into hits because they were better than just a TV show.

The song was written by the great John Stewart, who wrote so many great songs. One of America’s finest, his original is much more emotional...check it out.

The Monkees are pure ‘60s pop, but please ignore those who try and diminish their music with the “pre-fab four” label. Yes, the band was put together as an answer to the Beatles, and yes, they didn’t play the instruments on the tracks (two were musicians, but they weren’t allowed to play until later albums). However, they had top-notch writers (‘70s stars Carole King and Neil Diamond), and their songs remain outstanding, catchy classics. Don’t let anyone tell you that the ‘60s were just about about supergroups like the Beatles, Stones, and Beach Boys. Some of the best stuff comes from one- and two-hit wonders, but the Monkees had multiple hits. Others you should review: “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “Not Your Steppingstone,” “The Girl That I Knew Somewhere,” and the theme song to their TV show---which should be credited with giving birth to MTV (though the Beatles often get the credit due to their music-video movies).
My mother grew up on the Monkees so played a lot of them when I was a kid (in the 80s) so yeah, this is my childhood for sure! 😁
So glad you're enjoying the Monkees. They're hella fun and pretty much any song of theirs, no matter what it's about, will leave you feeling upbeat. For a brief time in the 60's they were as big as the Beatles. They were literally plucked and put together by tv producers to be a fictional rock band in a tv show (cerca 1966-1968) about four Beatle wannabes who were roomies/bffs living in a beach house in SoCal trying to get gigs to pay the rent. Two of them were professional actors who could sing really well (the little briittish guy was already at 19 an accomplished Broadway actor, hence his dance moves.The goofy one with curly hair (Mickey) had been a child TV star.) The other two were actually very accomplished musicians.
The show was goofy as heck but fun for kids/preteens/earlyteens. Each episode featured hit music that they sang, so kids went straight from their TVs to the record store.
Tween girls went NUTS for them, especially the little Brittish guy (Davy). Rumor is a girl literally put herself in a box and mailed herself to him. They joked that they put her back in the box and shipped her to the Beatles. He was one of the biggest teen heartthrobs of the time. (most episodes of the show featured Davy falling in love and getting them all in trouble.)
The genre would be, at the time, classified as "Bubblegum pop" in other words rock and roll that wasn't particularly "edgy" for it's time, something geared for your young teens. Now we'd call it "oldies."
If you thought they looked ike they were having fun in this song, you'd enjoy watching them do "She hangs out" in the same "rainbow room." setting. I also recommend "Words" (got a real cool sound), "Last Train to Clarksville" was one of their first hits (actually a subtle anti-vietnam war song describing someone going off to war.)
I also like "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Love was only Sleeping." They did a song called "Randy Scouse Git" which was edgy because the title (in Brittish slang) means "Horny Twerp from Liverpool" LOL.. but they got away with that title in the US because nobody knew what it meant. LOL.. so yeah, they tried to push the edges when they could.

As far as genre...I was born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s and we usually called their genre "Oldies" in kind of the same spectrum of pop rock back then. The same radio stations that played them would probably play Elvis or The Beach Boys, but not Johnny Cash, if that makes sense.
Something else you might want to delve into from here is Neil Diamond: The Monkees wrote their own songs, but they also played covers. And Neil Diamond (at the time) was actually just a hired songwriter at the same record company The Monkees were at.
After Neil wrote two #1 hits for The Monkees (I'm A Believer was one), it gave him the cred to walk into his bosses office and say "I want a recording contract" and he ended up becoming one of the biggest artists of the 70s and 80s.

As others have stated, these guys auditioned for the show. Both Mike and Peter were established musicians. Davy had been on Broadway in Oliver and Mickey had already been on a t.v. show called Circus Boy and later stated that the Monkees was another phase of his theatrical career. About ten years ago, one of the cable stations made a film called Daydream Believers about the rise and fall of the Monkees, but with actors. Not really a re-enactment, but interesting and followed up with interviews with the original members. Highly recommended just for your own edification.
60's music always causes me to feel nostalgic. Weird because I know nothing about the 60's and wasn't even born yet until another decade. But, it just seems like it was such a more simpler and happier time.
was born in 1991 but i grew up on the monkees my mom and grandma would watch the reruns of the show and i loved the music my first crush was micky the drummer 😂 i actually danced to this with my mom at my wedding because she is my best friend❤ they are a timeless classic. Also my favorite episode was when mike was the princess 😂

I think Cuddly Toy is one of their most overlooked songs. Goin Down is another very good song of theirs. Axl Rose of Guns N Roses emulated Davy Jones dance style, that's where he learned his moves from.
That little dance was called the Skate. Very popular when I was 16. Loved doing that dance and you can elaborate on the moves!
I'm so glad I got to see Micky, Peter and Michael do their 50th anniversary tour in 2016!! I seen them twice for that! So sad that Micky is the only one left! But he always has been my favorite 😍 R.I.P. Davy, Peter and Michael 🙏❤

Pleasant Valley Sunday is my fave
I used to watch the reruns of this show growing up, and my hubby and his kids love them too. A lot of songs to react to here. They were pop for sure, but they tried branching out into some folk. "Last Train to Clarksville", "Valerie", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Sometime in the Morning", and my personal favorite is one that I don't think was as big a hit but I just love the guitar and the beat in it, and that is "The Kind of Girl I Could Love". Mike Nesmith sang it and I really think it's an underrated song. I didn't notice any lag, good job!
It was commonly referred to as bubblegum rock. The genre pretty much died out by 1972 but produced some of the most engaging hook-ridden music ever. One of the best was 'Sugar, Sugar' by the Archies.
