They started out as two actors and two musicians for the TV show. Their first two albums were played by studio musicians, their third album was all them playing on every instrument. Many artists used studio musicians at the time. In the end, they became a real band. RIP Peter, Davy and Mike

Born in 63, I wasn't long out of my cot, I was brought up listening to this happy-go-lucky innocent music! The summer's just seemed to go longer and warmer! TV series had themes you remember to this day! I seem to remember a DJ saying - make the most of this Golden Era, it won't last forever! How right he was!

It's funny that yall said it sounds like a song you would hear at the end of a school musical, because when i was in the 4th grade, i sang this for the talent show. My dad raised me listening to music of all genres and eras. I'm very thankful for that now because my music listening is very diverse.

Ok geez this is my childhood. Yes that is Davey Jones singing. Peter Tork on piano. Mike Nesmith on guitar. Micky Dolenz on tambourine. They started as a TV show comedy about a band, emulating the crazy success of the Beatles. There is very little musical ability. They were primarily actors. But in the two seasons the show was on, they made an impact on our pop culture. Clothes, hair and some really fun songs. I think I was 7 when this came out but I was enchanted because I had never heard my name used in a song before. Yes, my first name is Jeanne. All but Micky are gone now, with Mike passing just recently in December. Thanks for making me smile this morning. Good memories. ❤️

I installed a satellite dish for the late John Stewart. John Stewart wrote "Daydream Believer" He was a member of The Kingston Trio (Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley.) As I walked upstairs with Mr Stewart during the install, I passed numerous Gold records hanging on the walls. There, framed in the original frame, was the Gold Record for "Daydream Believer". I commented to Mr. Stewart about that song, and my growing up with The Monkees. He chuckled to himself, pointed at the record, and said "that song bought me a few houses." One of my cherished memories to this day. RIP John Stewart. Check out his song with Stevie Nicks. Gold.

I wasn't even born but OMG when I first watched them as a kid was MY FAVORITE TV SHOW!!!! Back then they were HUGE!!! ---------- HOW THEY GOT THEIR NAME ---------Raybert had their four musicians, but they were lacking one important detail-a name for the band. Some possibilities tossed around: the Creeps, the Turtles, and the Inevitables. Then Schneider suggested taking a cue from how the Beatles had misspelled “beetles,” and he turned “monkeys” into Monkees.

Davy's voice type was really popular in the 60's and early 70's. To see another example I suggest *Donny Osmond* singing *Puppy Love* or *Twelfth of Never* in the early 70's. Donny and Michael Jackson were friends and contemporaries. Both were about 13 around that time and became super popular because they both had great voices and were so cute. I was a fan of both but Donny and Davy were my biggest crushes after Elvis. Elvis was always my number 1 crush.

Micky Dolenz, on tambourine in this video, was a child actor. His first job was in 1956 in a tv series called "Circus Boy." He used the name Micky Braddock. He worked on and off all through his childhood, and was hired for the Monkees while he was in college. While it's true that he didn't learn to drum until The Monkees, In the early 60s he had his own rock band, Micky and the All Nighters, in which he was the lead singer. I was a freshman in college when The Monkees premiered. We would all hit the common room every week to watch it -- the studying coud wait!

Nice one guys. Formed in 1966 I think by Universal Studios for a TV show too compete with The Beatles and Beatlemania to cash in on the phenomenon. These 4 we're chosen out over 1,000 young guys who auditioned for the parts. These 4 didn't know one another but jelled immediately. They turned out to pretty damn good. Their first two albums they weren't allowed to play any instruments on the records. Guitarist Mike Nesmith was a very accomplished guitarist and Peter Tork was also an accomplished keyboard, guitarist and even played banjo. Mickey Dolenz quickly became an adequate drummer. Davey Jones was the main lead singer and as you could guess was a total chick magnet, the went crazy over this guy. Nesmith was a very good songwriter and wrote a few that he sang and were hits. Drummer Mickey Dolenz also sang a lot of leaf vocals. The TV show The Monkees. was an instant success and a huge hit and as an 8 and 9 year old was a must watch for me. In America The Beatles were known as The Fab Four and when The Monkees hit they were often called the pre-fab four because they weren't a real band. Everything worked out fine though because they became a real band and by 67 they played their instruments on their records and doing live tours and selling out arenas and the girls went crazy just as with The Beatles. John Lennon enjoyed the TV show so much that The Monkees got to meet The Beatles in 1967 and even got to hang in the studio with them a little while The Beatles were recording their masterpiece album, "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" I think that Mike Nesmith went to India to meditate with The Beatles in 1968. Don't quote me on that though, I'd have to check. I know that Mike Love of The Beach Boys and singer, songwriter Donavon were there for sure. Yeah, The Monkees far exceeded what people thought of them when they came into our lives in 1967.The Monkees were pretty damn cool and had a lot of big hits. Sadly, Davey Jones passed from a by heart attack in 2012, Peter York in 2019 and Mike Nesmith passed right before Christmas this past year. Mickey Dolenz is the only one left now. Is it Kris? Look at Davey Jones young lady and tell me that you would not have been ga ga over him if you were a teenager girl back in the day. Hell, I'm a guy and straight but I may have had a man crush on him if I were a teen back then. 👌☮️✌️💕

This is a pretty good summary! If Mike did go to India with the Beatles, wow! I didn't know that! Now I'm going to have to look that up, too! lol Seriously, you gave a lot of good details here. I hope they read this! 💖

After his homecoming triumph at Monterey Pop in 1967, Jimi Hendrix was booked as the opening act for the Monkees, several of whom were fans, but his wild, often overtly sexual stage antics horrified mothers and probably disturbed their daughters who saw Davy Jones as an extension of their teddy bears. A rumor was concocted that the Daughters of the American Revolution had him kicked off the tour, saving everyone face. Lol.
Lead vocal in this one Davy Jones was from English musical theater, having starred in 'Oliver!', the Tony-winning musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist' as the Artful Dodger in London AND on Broadway. Peter Tork, on piano here, most often seen on bass, was a multi-instrumentalist, folkie and friend of Stephen Stills(Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) from Greenwich Village days. Saw him in a small-ish club in Toronto in 1983 playing a solo acoustic set, got his autograph and best-wishes on my script which mentioned his name among a litany of "agents of (positive) mutation" or mutagens. Gave him a copy too. Mickey Dolenz, here tambourine, usually drums and many or most of the lead vocals had been a child actor. Mike Nesmith, here and usually guitar had been an aspiring musician, taking up guitar after leaving the army. His mother invented the typewriter correction fluid Liquid Paper when he was 13, which she built into an international company over 25 years and sold for $48 million in 1979, dying a few months later at 56. He was an award-winning pioneer of music videos.
Check out their movie 'Head', co-written by actor Jack Nicholson, which mocks their "manufactured" reputation. See 'The Porpoise Song', written by famed team Gerry Goffin and Carole King. Trippy af. ;>D

The Monkees band were created for a TV show, just like The Partridge Family, where they took artists and actors and put them together to form the group. As mentioned Davy Jones, Peter Tork and recently Mike Nesmith have passed, leaving Micky Dolenz.
Well known trivia bits is that Mike Nesmith mother invented 'White Out or Correcting Fluid' that made her wealthy and famous, the product is still used today. Micky Dolenz was a young boy (12yrs) when he began his acting career in a TV Show of the 1950's called Circus Boy. Micky Dolenz played Corky in the show who was adopted by the travelling circus show. the show lasted 2 seasons.

1966 or 67. This was a made for TV Band. This was a primetime comedy/ music series that was on every week on Tuesday night at 8pm. It was mainly for "Teeny Boppers" around the ages of 7 to 13 years old. That was the target audience it was aimed at. So, it was a little corny, but it was safe and wholesome for the kids to watch. They were actually talented musicians, but a lot of their music was played and written by others. Some of their music was their own and played by them. The guys hated that the TV Network did that to them. This song was actually a huge hit, and it was played and sang by the Monkees. Three of the four original members have passed away in the last few years. Only Micky Dolenz, the drummer, and vocals is still alive. Very sad. Davey Jones (singing this song) was British, and the others were all American born. Good memories of my childhood in the 1960s.

Davy Jones was playing the Artful Dodger In the Broadway musical "OLIVER" in 1964, so he was singing in a scene from "OLIVER' with the other kids and the female lead character Nancy for the song "I'D DO ANYTHING" That was the same night that the Beatles made their first appearance in America on The Ed Sullivan Show. Watching them from the wings of the stage, Davy had said, I realized that THAT is what I won't to do NEXt (be in a rock band) Besides singing and acting on Broadway and in shows in his native England, he was also a jockey for a time, racing horses in the UK. He was not a tall man. He was the first of the Monkees to pass away. Only Mickey Dolenz (their drummer, but playing the tambourine here) is left. I used to watch him when I was a child on the Saturday morning's children's show "CIRCUS BOY" He had white blonde hair then as a child and went by MICKEY BRADDOCK in 1956.

They didn't take themselves too seriously and, so, we didn't either...at least, I didn't. But, it's weird, bc they became really BIG! Mike Nesmith, along with members of The Rollingstones, was present when The Beatles were recording ADAY IN THE LIFE. Check out their documentary, where it goes in depth about their Australia tour. The Monkeys were compared to the Beatles in just about every country except America. They were huge. The documentary does a fantastic job of showing how down to earth and smart those guys really were. They were big activist and so humble. Michael Nesmith went on to win a award. I can't exactly remember, but it has something to do with either the first music video or short movie . I can't remember. He was big in the music industry for many years after the Monkeys Era. Yes, they had a cheesy television show, but it was fantastic to us kids at that time. They did a bunch of good for many people and made good wholesome music. I'll still f with them.

Here is the intro/outro to their tv show, see :- th-cam.com/video/jZCPkHCf8O8/w-d-xo.html
Davy Jones was originally a child actor here in the U.K., then spent sometime as a jockey before going stateside. Mickey Dolenz was also a child actor, I think most well known for his part in the U.S. tv show, Circus boy. The Monkees tv show episodes are available on TH-cam, fun & good music abound.

I still have all my Monkee albums and also have the newer album, "Pool It" and 45 rpm, "That Was Then This Is Now". I even have Peter and Micky on videotape (taped from MTV or VH-1) doing their music video for that song. I have quite a few "Monkees" tv series episodes that I taped back when MTV had some Monkee marathons!!! They still play great. One of my brothers and I watched the tv series every week during its initial run.

When I think of the 60s, my teen years, I think of garage bands and pop/rock groups who met as kids, like The Beatles, and formed a band. Not The Monkees. They were a corporate creation from the ground up. The "band" didn't write the songs or even play on the records at first. Yet it all worked for a while, and pop classics like this song came out of it.

    • @satanlaffing

With all due respect, does it really matter how the Monkees came together? I'm sorry, I can't help but be irritated when the "not a real band" argument comes up. It's been over 50 years. Why does this still matter? Can't we get past how they were "manufactured" and just be grateful that it happened? Can't we just appreciate the music that exists without being so critical of how it came into existence?

I recommend Last Train to Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday and I'd love to see if you recognize I'm a believer. 😉

That singer, David "Davy" Jones used to live in my town in Florida before his sudden death in 2012, about 10 years ago this month. You probably wondering why Davy living in small town. Let me give you a short summary. Davy had a friend named Basil who used to live in a local trailer park. Davy visited Basil when he is in town. Years go by, Davy fallen in love with my town because townspeople treated him like a regular guy not a celebrity. When I was working at a local pub owned by one of my friends, Davy usually stops by for his Pint of Guinness. But at one Saturday evening, my friend had Davy to sing this song with him during Karaoke. At this pub, Saturdays were Karaoke Nights. My friend stated that Davy usually gets paid for this song. Like in this video, Davy sang this song live in front of local audience that night! Then 10 years ago this month on 29th of February, during his riding one of horses, (he was a horse jockey prior to his muisc) Davy experienced chest pains, and rushed to local hospital when he died of a heart attack.
