I am very surprised that although this is one of the most anticipated laptops this year, there is only a handful of people making in-depth reviews for it. Great work and thank you.
I am also suprised but hey, less competition for me :) I love mine so I am not sure why everyone is so hard on it. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it 👍
Just got one of these for christmas. I think my parents bought me with the FHD model though. I can't wait to get it setup. I don't plan on bringing this with me to school, but maybe on some road trips if I can use my phone as a hotspot.
You can also get an alienware vindicator v2.0 17 bag which has the alienware aesthetic, it is a back pack it has a lot of padding, should be $129 at a local best buy but you can price match that down to about 100
hey i have the alienware 17 r4 (gtx 1070) which has ips FHD 60 hz. Is it worth to upgrade to QHD tn panel , g-sync and 120 hz ? I am only worried that tn panel will watch out the color screen ...
Great review of the new R4 model (I have the 2015 17 R3 GTX 980M model). I saw this Aliens R4 model with the same specs on sale at Best Buy for $1899.00. I also just subscribed.
Great Review!! Never use Alienware before, I like their design and System, Im planning to buy the Alienware 15 R3, but saw someone complain about the thermal and the GSync issue, Still Concerning about their quality and you know this Laptop price is not cheap.
Just ordered one of these for LANs and traveling. Good review! Couple of issues to work on improving in your videos: might need a mic upgrade, sound capture from games was pretty badly compressed (garbled "underwater" effect, sounds like heavy noise removal was added in post). When uploading high fps gameplay, uploading in 60fps can help a lot. And yes, it's a gaming laptop, but we all use the trackpad from time to time when we have to, a few notes on that would help. No review of the Tobii Eye tracking feature other than Windows Hello, and no mention of color accuracy. That's really important info for those who do any kind of image/video editing or rendering on the go and are considering a system like this. Temp readings and thermal throttle testing would also be appreciated, as some of these 2016 units, and the 2017 GTX 1080 units can have stuttering issues after ~30 minutes of heavy use. Good review though!
good video! i am planning to buy the next generation alienware 17 as a desktop replacement. i hope it has some improvements like per key backlighting, a few additional usb 3 type a ports and a 2160p 60hz gsync ips or 1440p 120hz gsync ips display
Good review 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I just bought mine a week ago and i cant stop playing games and its my first ever gaming laptop and i know alienware is made for gaming but i got the 1920x1080 resolution its couple hundred $$$ difference. But does it really make any difference And also can you play all the games in 2560x1440 Resolution without having any problems?? Or it depends on the game??Need to know coz i feel like i wanna return mine and get the higher resolution if it makes any difference thanks 😁
If your display is a 1080 that is the highest you can go. But, you can use an external monitor and get higher res if you want. Someone said they discontinued the 1440 display and you can only get it at Best Buy now. They had a ton of banding issues (lines across the screen). Mine does not have that issue. Honestly if you like the 1080 I would keep it and not worry about the 1440. Also the 1440 has G Sync which means it syncs the FPS to the screen but it also hurts the battery big time. You can get double the battery on the 1080 model if it does not have G Sync. To me that would be worth the lower resolution.
Careful using the Nvidia Game Capture/Recording. It adversely impacts framerates. If you also have Xbox Microsoft on your PC, this also adversely impacts framerates. Both features can be turned off. TechYesCity did a tutorial on this....great review.
Thanks for the review! It was really helpful seeing some of the software explained. I don't have my system yet, but it can't hurt to read up a bit. Was that everything?
Thanks for the nice review. How is the display? Did you notice any banding issues? (those horizontal lines) Maybe add a conclusion at the end of the video next time. Like pros/cons in summary and your final thought. Keep it up! /Subscribed
Just got mine today. Open box deal. Saved 600$ bc they said there was a smudge on the bottom of it..i don't see Any smudge. Can't wait to get the Rift/ some new Games. Saw some people running witcher 3 at 1440p high/ultra settings? What's your overall opinion? Any advice? Thnx for the great review!
Hey, one of the best reviews on this laptop, do you happen to know how well it fares with League of Legends? Keep up the great work btw! loved this review
Is the soft touch finish only around the palm rest area? Is it easy to clean? I find it funny Dell says it's supposed to prevent dust and fingerprints but every soft touch finish product I ever used never does.
i really love this year's alienware design. unfortunately they are quite expensive. as asus g752 have a huge discount in bestbuy 10 days ago, i pick up asus g752 instead of alienware...
sir which has the better screen quality this 120hz TN panel who's or 60hz ups panel what do you think about this panel quality and black levels becouse you didn't mentioned it.
Thanks for your time and effort I have small concern because I'm planning to buy this laptop strictly for video editing So what are the minimum requirements such as gpu and screen choice and if the 4k screen color profile is great I know there are better screen choices like xps But this laptop build quality and design wins it for me Again thank you and looking forward for other videos
Hi I just ordered AW with the Similar Specs .. is this Good for Video Editing too .. can it do 4K video Editing .. also can i Plugin 4K Monitor to this ..
I've purchased the same laptop with same almost same specs, difference being, I have the one with 1060 graphics card. my question is, is 1060 would work well with qhd screen?
great review. i just purchased the aw 17 r4 with the i7 7700hq, gtx 1070, 256gb ssd but with the standard fhd 1080p 60hz ips display. would dell let me return it and get it with the qhd 1440p display? is it worth the wait and extra $250?
Yup that laptop has an HDMI port built right in. Just plug in the monitor and switch to that screen with the function key on your keyboard and you are good to go!
great i looking for buy it in monday same laptop on the video 17.3" QHD Display Intel Core i7 6th Gen 6700HQ Processor 16GB DDR4 RAM 128GB SSD and 1TB HD 7200 Mechanical
I just subscribed, I have a question for you, I've purchased a 17 R4 with a GTX 1070 for my son's graduation gift and it is arriving Monday, I'm having double thoughts on returning this unit as I'm afraid the 1070 will get too hot and create a lot of fan noise and instead ordering a new one with a GTX 1060 for much cooler performance. I'll appreciate your advice.
Honestly this version has no issues with the 1070 and your son is going to love it! Keep the 1070. Plus, Alienware has next day free service for their laptops! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reply, my only issue is that I got a nice deal but it's the one with the 6700hq cpu, I'm not sure if they are old laptops or they still build it with the skylake cpu, it was a brand new prebuilt system arriving tomorrow.
It should be ok. Did you get the warranty with it? I ran the 6700 HQ version with no issues. Love the system and with the 1070 it flies! I use it for my HTC Vive setup when on the road, that is how powerful it is!
No warranty, just the 1 year premium by default, thanks for the advice, I'm writing on a GS73VR with a 1060 and I love it but I want a 1070 for myself too :o) I'm still deciding between MSI GT72VR and the 17 R4, not sure which one is bulkier or better.
Quick question the battery life is pretty low compared to the 10 hour boast on the website is there anyway to get the advertised 10 hours because I'll be traveling a lot
You will get no where near 10 hours of battery life. Use lower display brightness, disable all un needed extras, don't open a bunch of tabs in chrome and you can get 5-6 hours of use with the normal IPS display. You will get around 4 hours with the 1440p 120hz panel.
I have ordered today 17.3” R4 with GTX1070 and UHD screen. They don't have QHD 120Hz screen in 17”. Should I cancel my order and order 15” QHD 120Hz display? Someone said that 1070 won't play most titles in 4K so no need for UHD screen. Can you please guide me?
just bought one but read on reddit they were having all kinds of problems and that's why you can't get the 1080 even though it says it does. got the uhd and all that hope it don't turn out to be crap
I honestly feel it's a miss match of resolution and refresh rate. You probably aren't going to be taking advantage of 120hz at 1440p. It's too bad, I've been stalking the Alienware 17 at Best Buy and I love the construction and feel of it. I just can't get it in a configuration I want: 1080p/120hz/ G-Sync. Looks like I'll be waiting for the Asus GL702VS to come out....
The GS73VR is a good system but it only has a 1060 card. If I was getting a system for strictly gaming I would get a 1070. The 4k Displays look nice but I went with the 120hz panel so I could get maximum framerate with g sync.
xzinx I bought the MSI GS73 VR .. I absolutely love the build, and it's far more portable than the Alienware. If you have any questions regarding the laptop, feel free to ask!
Hey guys, I really need your help. I have an Alienware 17 QHD 120hz Display with GTX 1070. My problem is that the Gsync option is no longer showing on Nvidia control pannel as the display is now being handled by the integrated graphics somehow. Pressing fn+f7 gives a ''not supported with GSYNC LCD panel"" error. I've updated to all the latest drivers but nothing helps, The system is essencially running on optimus and all the nvidia options have dissapeared as it is not the primary display. Hope that makes sense, I have searched all over the internet and it seems I'm the only one facing this issue.
anybody with this same laptop have issues with their qhd screen flashing off and then back on for a split second while running the Furmark benchmark? Mine is doing it only in 1440 mode and flashes off/on every 10 secs and then it start to span out further between the flashes. I have the lastest nvidia drivers installed. Does this indicate a malfunctioning card or some other issue?
That's the one I ordered. .. got some insane specs.. HOWEVER.. I heard a rumor that the 1080TI will be coming out in a few months and will be 1/3 better performance. .
I think with gaming lap tops its like tattoos... go big or go home. The main reason you buy a lap top is for portability but gaming lap tops have 2 hours of battery life so that defeats the whole point. So getting the 17 inch 10lbs monster but with a better GTX 1070 is worth it.
How would this one fair with the i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, 17.3 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits, 16GB DDR4 at 2400MHz (2x8GB), 256GB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)? I've heard that the GPUs in these Alienware Systems should be getting higher FPS in Overwatch. I've seen a lot of people complaining and getting around 70 FPS on FHD with these specs and yours (on FHD). My question is how are you the only one I see that is getting these frames on Overwatch (even at 1440p)? This would be my first gaming Laptop and I need it to last for a lot of years to come as I can't just buy a new one easily. www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/alienware-17/spd/alienware-17-laptop/dkcwkblg0722
I have the 17r3 with 970m overclocked and a gtx 1080 in the amplifier. I don't think it's worth the upgrade until a good CPU jump occurs. Same CPU as the r3. The panel is nice, but 4k is heavenly. If I invest in a display I think I'll buy a 144hz gsync 24-27inch to make it worth while. Hopefully in a couple years we get desktop CPUs in laptops standard as well.
No because even running AAA games at 1440 it can push them well over 100FPS and since it would be useless at 60FPS they have to use 120hz panels since that is the standard.
That would be a dream job... but I could never sit at a desk for hours at a time... I get crazy if I sit down for more than an hour or two at a shot...
Justin Connors sounds like an excellent career... my best friends son does the graphics art in computer games and is working in calf... he has also done a few TV commercials... he is doing well out there... good luck!
The funny thing is that you cannot see any of that but the camera shooting in 4K picks up everything. Look when I zoom into screen looks horrible. That system is perfectly cleaned lol. Thanks for the suggestion tho. I get mad every time I see this video because of it.
I did vote for Trump and I do listen to Icecube. I grew up in the ghetto and I like my rap music. I also like my guns. Anything wrong with any of this?
Chad Christian don't get passed with me I did say it was a joke also could you please reply to my more serious question I'm 17and about to start college also I'll be traveling a lot and like to think I'll be doing a lot of video editing so would the battery life suffice or do I need to get a powerbanks or start looking at other laptops
Karan Desai If you need longer battery life go with the 15" model with the 1080p panel and a 1060 GTX card. Otherwise as long as you are by an outlet after 4 hours or so this would be ok. If you are carrying this around for school it will get heavy. Might want to look at the Razer Blade w/1060. I bought that for my son to carry around and he loves it.
Chad Christian thanks a lot you are the only person to help me out not even Alienware gave a proper answer but I've wanted an Alienware since forever so I think I'll go with the 15
Great review! Loved the "lapability" part :D
David Gil Navalón That thumbs up was great. haha
Thinking about buying this for Christmas thanks for the helpful review subbed!
Thanks for the Sub. You will love it!

Make sure you check out my latest video on how to move and play games on an external drive. Might save you a ton of time.
just got mine Thursday and this laptop is a monster,i couldn't find a bag it would fit in for the life of me
You need a 18" laptop bag to fit it.
Chad Christian when i get a chance ill look into it thx
Here check this bag out: amzn.to/2lbuH3O
You can also get an alienware vindicator v2.0 17 bag which has the alienware aesthetic, it is a back pack it has a lot of padding, should be $129 at a local best buy but you can price match that down to about 100
LamBChoP thx for the reply, bestbuy is the first place i checked and they didnt have anything so i ordered one
Awesome review. I got this in Nov and love it.The picture and sound are amazing.Dell also has an in home warranty which is great.
Yes sir 1 year in home warranty. Pretty awesome deal. Glad you like it!
nice! Great Review Chad, It's a sweet machine. I think the 15" is the perfect sweet spot = )
Thanks for watching. Yeah I agree the 15 is much more portable. This 17 is a full blown desktop replacement.
hey i have the alienware 17 r4 (gtx 1070) which has ips FHD 60 hz. Is it worth to upgrade to QHD tn panel , g-sync and 120 hz ? I am only worried that tn panel will watch out the color screen ...
I can't wait until I get mine from make a wish, great video and awesome in depth review.
Alvaro Hernandez thank you very much.
Great review of the new R4 model (I have the 2015 17 R3 GTX 980M model). I saw this Aliens R4 model with the same specs on sale at Best Buy for $1899.00. I also just subscribed.
Thanks for watching and for the sub!
Nice review, I love Alienware, I hope have one in a next future, good work !!
Thank you.
Great Review!! Never use Alienware before, I like their design and System, Im planning to buy the Alienware 15 R3, but saw someone complain about the thermal and the GSync issue, Still Concerning about their quality and you know this Laptop price is not cheap.
Alienware includes a 1 year In Home warranty. They are the only company I know that does that so you don't have to worry about any issues.
Just ordered one of these for LANs and traveling.

Rezo Byte thank you I appreciate it. I have since fixed all those issues.

i am planning to buy the next generation alienware 17 as a desktop replacement. i hope it has some improvements like per key backlighting, a few additional usb 3 type a ports and a 2160p 60hz gsync ips or 1440p 120hz gsync ips display
Good review 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

great video !! what about the temps? does it run very hot?
How about some likes on this video. I have over 10 hours of work in this one :) Subscribe so you don't miss any videos like this.
Is it possible you could get some temp numbers for the CPU? Lots of people with these new Alienware laptops are having temperature issues.
Heaviest load it never went over 80 c
Chad Christian bro any comments on battery life ?
Umesh Ramchandani I get around 3 hours on normal use with 50% brightness, social media, browsing the web, youtube, etc.. About 1 hour with gaming.
So many views but no likes.... :( you deserve more
Excellent video Chad!!! Thumbs up and subbed
Your sniping on BF1 drove me crazy omg. But decent laptop getting mines Friday 😁
Thanks for the review! It was really helpful seeing some of the software explained. I don't have my system yet, but it can't hurt to read up a bit. Was that everything?
Love the video! Definitely going to make a purchase!
Glad you liked it Tommy! If you want to help the channel use the link in the description to buy the laptop. Thanks for watching!
Chad Christian how is the screen? It's a TN panel rit?? So how are the viewing angles and color reproduction compared to an IPS display?
Thanks for the nice review.
How is the display? Did you notice any banding issues? (those horizontal lines)
Maybe add a conclusion at the end of the video next time. Like pros/cons in summary and your final thought.
Keep it up! /Subscribed
+floKKe no banding issues. Thanks for the suggestions and the sub.
The most comprehensive review i have seen, Cool man
Surya raghavendran Muth krishnan thank you very much.
BTW, I just booked anlienware 17 r4 with gtx 1060
That is great! I hope you enjoy it.
CWC Technologies thanks ✌
hey man nice review!!!👍....I just wanted to ask that did you had any display issues with it??
No I have not had any banding issues or weird display issues. I think that was only the first batch that went out.
Chad Christian thanks!!!
Liked your video - May I ask How are the viewing angles on this panel?
Viewing angles are really good. I wish I would have put it on a video. Maybe I will do one just for that and some temps etc...
I want this laptop so much I have the alienware 17 r2 with a 970m its amazing but this is way better
This is still one of my all-time favorite laptops. You will have a great time with it. thanks for watching!
excellent PC my next choice for gaming laptop, all that matters to me was the noises and heat.
It's the best all around gaming laptop out.
Hi there is there any ghosting and motion blur issue ? Also, are you playing at ultra ?
Hey, one of the best reviews on this laptop, do you happen to know how well it fares with League of Legends? Keep up the great work btw! loved this review
Xception it crushes LoL. Thanks for watching!
Did u play the games with a controller or keyboard and mouse? Btw great vid
Thank you. I use both. In this video I was using a controller.

I really am confused on which one to get? Is the 15 r3 better or the 17 r4? But I have heard that they have a heating problem?
Thanks for your time and effort
I have small concern because I'm planning to buy this laptop strictly for video editing

would you be able to post a gpu and cpu stress test. Many claim that the temperatures get to the high 80 and into the 90's
I did a stress test on it when I first got it and they were in the low 80's.
when did u bought it sir.. cuz the first production had temp issues i heard
I think I bought it Dec 9 or so. I do not have the temp issues I saw people having.
Did you notice the screen stripping on still images? It's an issue with all 120hz 1440p laptops.
تمت إزالة ديل جميع الخيارات QHD!!
It was pulled from the Amazon option except Best Buy Available
I never noticed it on mine. But I saw a ton of people talking about it on Reddit.
Available only one option gtx 1080
Strange that Dell Remove all options QHD 1440P !!!!

I've purchased the same laptop with same almost same specs, difference being, I have the one with 1060 graphics card. my question is, is 1060 would work well with qhd screen?
I think it would be good. You can play games at 1440 with the 1060 just might have to turn down the quality a little bit.
Chad Christian thank you so much for your reply ☺
Hows the viewing angles on this screen? I read its better than the one from aw15r3
great review. i just purchased the aw 17 r4 with the i7 7700hq, gtx 1070, 256gb ssd but with the standard fhd 1080p 60hz ips display. would dell let me return it and get it with the qhd 1440p display? is it worth the wait and extra $250?
I would say keep the 1080 and just an external monitor if you want to really crank it up to 4k or something nice.
Chad Christian really? ive never done that before. do i just buy an external qhd monitor and use an hdmi cord?
Yup that laptop has an HDMI port built right in. Just plug in the monitor and switch to that screen with the function key on your keyboard and you are good to go!
Chad Christian awesome! thank you for the tip.
When did it release this Laptop?
謝謝你的分享(Thank you for your sharing.)
Thank you for watching.
Any issues after using this for a while? I have seen a lot of problems come out of these new models.
I have not had any issues yet. I think that was the first batch of these units
how are the cpu temps
This one or the 15 r3?
New drinking game discovered, everytime he says "bad boy" take a shot.

how is the QHD TN panel compare with alienware 15 UHD IPS ?
hey bro, is there any nvidia optimus option for this ?
Yes but obviously not this version because it has G Sync.

How many FPS does it get when i play gta iv and beamNG
great video man :)
Thank you so much. I appreciate it!
some people are complaining about the QHD 120HZ display having white lines, did you experience this issue ?
Berte Ladji I have one and no banding at all
how did the temps look like? I get around 90C Cpu when playing Battlefield 1
I get in the high 80's but I also have the CPU under volted.
yeah I did undervolted it too! Thanks for the fast reply!
No problem.
The 1070 will have a hard time pushing 4k. I have a link in the description on the one I would recommend.
Where is the battery bar pro link? :P
just bought one but read on reddit they were having all kinds of problems and that's why you can't get the 1080 even though it says it does. got the uhd and all that hope it don't turn out to be crap
They have a 1 year onsite support with them if anything goes wrong.
what is the color accuracy ? RGB and sRGB
Berte Ladji if you buy the oled display on it
it srgb 100%
I wish they offered a 1080p 120hz g-sync display
Same here.
Its a great laptop and still compete rtx 30 series laptops
this laptop or GS73VR STEALTH PRO 4K-016? msi has 1060, and is there any pros going with a 4k display?
The GS73VR is a good system but it only has a 1060 card. If I was getting a system for strictly gaming I would get a 1070. The 4k Displays look nice but I went with the 120hz panel so I could get maximum framerate with g sync.
for what i play, 1060 is enough, im just torn between the displays, and price are almost same, thanks for quick reply #subscribed
xzinx thanks for the sub.
xzinx I bought the MSI GS73 VR .. I absolutely love the build, and it's far more portable than the Alienware. If you have any questions regarding the laptop, feel free to ask!
How is the fan noise on the msi?
Stop complaining about battery life, you all are not gonna go live in a jungle.
haha that is a great comment. Thanks for watching!
Is the fan really loud when gaming?
Not at all. This has one of the most quiet fan systems of all gaming laptops.
Chad Christian thanks for your help
No problem at all.
3-7 years lol you can use the ezternal got it’s good for a lot longer then that
To see the FPS in bf1 you open your console and then type... perfoverlay.drawfps 1
I tried that but it didn't work. I will have to try it again.
overwatch can be set to epic! :P
Great video
Thank you
Nice vedio!
To bad it didn't have the Nvidia 1080.. ordered one with 4.1 chip.. Ton of money. . thinking I should've gone with MSI..
they have a 1080 version. i missed the sale though where they are selling the1080 version for $2,800 now its 3000+ ):
That's the one I ordered. .. got some insane specs.. HOWEVER.. I heard a rumor that the 1080TI will be coming out in a few months and will be 1/3 better performance. .
I think with gaming lap tops its like tattoos... go big or go home. The main reason you buy a lap top is for portability but gaming lap tops have 2 hours of battery life so that defeats the whole point. So getting the 17 inch 10lbs monster but with a better GTX 1070 is worth it.
I'm kinda afraid that it might overheat if I play at 4k
It does not overheat. You can also use laptop fan pad
Why aweryone are observing overwatch ? is this game really pretty coll? I doubt

But can it play minecraft
Oh it can!
8:41 My Whyyyyyyyy-Fiiiiiiiiiiii...
lol
Thanks to your review i purchased the ALIENWARE 17 R4. Great review and awesome laptop. Cheers
Suki Mu glad it helped.
Is the 120hz screen this laptop just a joke? Since it cannot run most 3A games on fps higher than 120 (on highest graphic settings with 2k).
No because even running AAA games at 1440 it can push them well over 100FPS and since it would be useless at 60FPS they have to use 120hz panels since that is the standard.
Chad Christian good to know. thanks
You are welcome.
Awesome thank you Pedro!
How's gta5
Runs easily
How about this just with 8gb of ram
Where's Minecraft
what are you 12?
Zerix This can run Minecraft at 140+ fps...
10 hours of game play! Work? Lol... yea... I'll tell my boss I'm Gona play games on my laptop... work right?
if you're a video game programmer. Then yeah, you can probably get away with that :)
That would be a dream job... but I could never sit at a desk for hours at a time... I get crazy if I sit down for more than an hour or two at a shot...
It's what i'm in college to become :)
Justin Connors sounds like an excellent career... my best friends son does the graphics art in computer games and is working in calf... he has also done a few TV commercials... he is doing well out there... good luck!
I own my company so I am free to do what I want ;)
😁
You were #1 Nice!!
Wipe the dog hair off your table before you shoot. The staging area is very distracting.
The funny thing is that you cannot see any of that but the camera shooting in 4K picks up everything. Look when I zoom into screen looks horrible. That system is perfectly cleaned lol. Thanks for the suggestion tho. I get mad every time I see this video because of it.
This is just a joke
Dude looks like he votes for trump but is listening to icecube
Chad Christian thanks a lot you are the only person to help me out not even Alienware gave a proper answer but I've wanted an Alienware since forever so I think I'll go with the 15
Karan Desai Glad I could help out man. You will love it!
