Considering that you can update files via the file manager in your hosting service what would you say is the main benefit of using FTP? Is it simply to access all your files for multiple websites without having to log in to different hosts? Or is there more control that you obtain through using it?
Hi there! Thanks for your good question. The main reason FTP is indeed for managing a lot of files easier. It’s a drag and drop piece of software and works way better when transferring large files (larger than 500MB for instance). Browsers might disconnect the download or the upload, and FileZilla lets you resume the up/download. Also when working on files this works perfect. Upon editing a file, it saves a local version. Whenever you save the local version, FilZilla will ask if you want to upload the changed file. So you don’t have to do it manually again, really useful. And yeah also the fact you can create a list of servers so you easily connect to them is very convenient.

I am having trouble connecting to my remote server, it keeps giving this message "Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing". Any advice?
Hi there and thanks for the kind words! It seems that the host is not correct or the Port when you get this message. Or the SSL or TLS settings, could be anything really 👍🏻😀 ask your hosting company why you get this message?
Hi Dikshant! Thanks for the comment. Well in this case you must dubbelcheck your FTP credentials from your hosting company. It sounds that its not configured good so that it sends you to another place instead of your server where all your files are...

Hi Cyril! That’s a great question. I have never done that 😎 But it’s fun to investigate. Maybe you can point your wp-content folder to a OneDrive account, but I would highly doubt if that would work 🤔
Hi Matt, I setup and everything but I have a issue with encryption method, "use explicit FTP over TLS if available" does not work ... only one that works is "Only use plain FTP" but that says it's unsecure ... I also tried WinSCP with the same credentials and it works out the box ... do you know anything about this or the fix? All I find on TH-cam is to use the unsecured method
Hi Rashaad, in this case the hosting is the problem. They only provide insecure FTP. It still works though… you can contact your host or just use insecure FTP for the time being.

Hi again! Every hosting has a place where you can see the FTP settings 😀 so just look around a bit or ask them in the support
I connected my site but it doesn’t show the folders, it just show .ftpquota File when i connect
