As you mention in the video, the first stage of this game is insane, to me it feels like playing an 80s anime opening, is THAT frantic and its music is THAT good, same feelings. Alongside Twin Cobra and Raiden, this is one of my favourite shmups of this era.
I had never played a PC Engine game in my life before the MiSTer. It contains an absolute horde of amazing shmups! I play it more than a lot of the cores of systems I actually grew up with - so good!
10/10 game, legitimately. I can’t think of a single thing I would change about it. THE game that got me into shmups when it released on the Wii Virtual Console.
Similar for me! i played the golden age/ grand dad shmups on 2600 and loved them. then moved to c64 and nes and even though those systems do have great shmups i rarely saw them on c64 (did not have many friends with the system who loved shmyps) and certainly no access to mags for reviews. On nes the carts were expensive and shmups had a reputation for being quikcly completed so almost never dared to spend money on it. The on amiga i got r-type and loved it! few years of shmup darkness.....even though i had a saturn...but no imports *cry* and then emulation started and i played truxton arcade WOW loved that but still to much other stuff to play till the wii hit and i gambled Soldier Blade out of all the goodness on offer with the VC. Wow, loved it to bits and with new super mario and dkcr one of my most played wii games! Really enjoy sampling all kinds of shmups over various systems these days!
It's a no brainer include the Famicom original, the 3 or so PC Engine games. The GameCube/PSP/PS2 game and the Wiiware game Nobody knows about. I don't think we talk about the N64 game
Thank you for covering the one of the only games I’m totally cool with dropping 2 bills on. Luckily I found it for a couple hundred, some copies are going for 4 hundred.
Hell yea!! One of my fav shoot em ups! Amazing graphics. Amazing it’s running on card and not CD. I love the strategy of using the bomb to dump the current weapon to swap to another! ❤
Fantastic little shmup, a real showcase on the console. I was recently playing it on the coregrafx mini but that thing is a bit laggy. I'll be sure to fire it up on real hardware next time.
@@VideoGameEsoterica i find myself switching because my reflexes aren’t as good as they use to be, so High speed helps me avoid bullet paths but Low is helpful for micro dodging for sure
I don't own any retro consoles I emulate and or buy the ports they sometimes do of these classic games. And out of curiosity I thought, "how much for some of my favorite pc engine games?" Then I remember why I emulate immediately...
I share your sentiments regarding Soldier Blade, everything about this game is on point. I do not own the TurboGarfx 16 but played it via emulation. Would you happen to know if it is available on the Mister, I would love to revisit it soon as I get my MisterPi
Was wondering about this myself. Button stuck issue? Being able to 'stock' powerups and switch to a differet weapon type after using one as a 'bomb' is a big part of the gameplay that is now ignored!
Best shmup is so hard. Just like best zelda..zelda 1 and 2 on nes are already so different let alone if you add botw and now echoes. Still SB is amazing and in my top 5 (raiden 2, truxton, gynoug, kyuu tiger also score high. Love psikyo games too. Stuff like bgreg and dodonpachi is cool but i have less passion for myself. Also think judgement silversword is tremendous fun.
I really Like it, BUT I like Final Soldier a little Bit more. It is a personal reference, do don't kill me for that. Soldier Blade is a really close 2nd place for me. And i May be one of the few people that also Love Image Fight and Dragon Spirit and Dragon Saber.
It's my favorite PC Engine game. Beautiful graphics, cool soundtrack, perfect difficulty (for me at least) - it's a real gem!
So far everyone agrees haha. Rare
The Turbografx/PC Engine is such a great console for shoot em ups!
Soldier Blade is an excellent choice.
It’s maybe the best shmup library of any console. Saturn being a VERY close second
As you mention in the video, the first stage of this game is insane, to me it feels like playing an 80s anime opening, is THAT frantic and its music is THAT good, same feelings.
Alongside Twin Cobra and Raiden, this is one of my favourite shmups of this era.
It def hits the intensity hard minute one
I had never played a PC Engine game in my life before the MiSTer. It contains an absolute horde of amazing shmups! I play it more than a lot of the cores of systems I actually grew up with - so good!
I love hearing people discovering entire console libraries from MiSTer
Soldier blade isn't just a classic on the PCE, it deserves to be in every PCE collector's library
I agree. But obviously I do haha. I made the vid
proud to say that I own a physical copy of this wonderful game
Awesome game to have on the shelf
having played this and the other PCE star soldier games a couple months ago, this one is by far the best one easily
It’s def my fav
10/10 game, legitimately. I can’t think of a single thing I would change about it. THE game that got me into shmups when it released on the Wii Virtual Console.
The only problem the game has is that eventually you beat it and it ends lol

My favourite PC Engine game!
High up on the list for me too
We are long overdue for a Star Soldier collection.
I love caravan modes and these were among the first to include them.
I am kind of surprised no compilation has been made yet
It's a no brainer include the Famicom original, the 3 or so PC Engine games. The GameCube/PSP/PS2 game and the Wiiware game Nobody knows about.
I don't think we talk about the N64 game
I wonder who has the rights to them all now
They were Hudson soft games so they're rotting in the Konami vault
Well Konami has been letting more stuff out lately. They’ve gotten better than “terrible”
Hello! Good morning from Brazil!
Morning Brazil!
Thank you for covering the one of the only games I’m totally cool with dropping 2 bills on. Luckily I found it for a couple hundred, some copies are going for 4 hundred.
Def hasn’t gotten any cheaper lately that’s for sure
Hell yea!! One of my fav shoot em ups! Amazing graphics. Amazing it’s running on card and not CD. I love the strategy of using the bomb to dump the current weapon to swap to another! ❤
It’s from start to finish an awesome game filled with some fun mechanics
Think it actually helps it's running from the HuCard, no slow loads or cheesy Redbook musics here :)
Fantastic little shmup, a real showcase on the console. I was recently playing it on the coregrafx mini but that thing is a bit laggy. I'll be sure to fire it up on real hardware next time.
Def give it another play
Wonderful game that I play often, the Low is your speed which can be changed at anytime with select. My favorite shooter is Gradius 3
I like keeping it a bit slow
@@VideoGameEsoterica i find myself switching because my reflexes aren’t as good as they use to be, so High speed helps me avoid bullet paths but Low is helpful for micro dodging for sure
This game is tied with Magical Chase for my favourite shmup ever.
It’s one of the best on the system for sure
I played this an insane amount back then
With Ann Randers?
For me the best shooter on the PC engine. Probably in my top 3 of all time too.
There’s just so many awesome shmups to choose from on PC Engine. Which is awesome
Definitely. What do you think are the other two in your opinion?
@vmguedes for me Truxton and Soukyugurentai. I guess a lot of people will have a different top 3 but this is my fav 3 shooters.
The greatest SHMUP on the PC Engine despite having a rushed development cycle. To this day, I am still trying to get a 1CC.
1CC will take a LOT of practice
This is it! My favorite shmup on the TG-16! Soldier Blade is an S-tier shmup!
So a Vermont cheddar caliber game is what you mean
Hey, I said the game was great, not cheap imitation!
I’ll let it slide today cause I know you aren’t having a good today but tomorrow it’s back on
I don't own any retro consoles I emulate and or buy the ports they sometimes do of these classic games. And out of curiosity I thought, "how much for some of my favorite pc engine games?" Then I remember why I emulate immediately...
Hahaha yes they are not cheap
Incredible game.
10/10 game for sure
0:17 “Esotericannerrrrtnaninggssrsss”
🤣
Soldier Blade was great, but nothing beats GUNHEAD!
Another classic for sure
a very very good game for sure💪
One of the best
@@VideoGameEsoterica it truly is
Just downloaded the rom! No idea how they packed all the sound effects, music, levels and graphics into 385KB. 🤯
It’s wild when you look at the game and the file size
Its up there with original R-Type in the best shooters catagory.
Override by DataEast is another 'Hidden Gem" shooter on PCE too. Nice choice 👍
I have a copy of Override on the shelf. Haven’t played it in forever
@@VideoGameEsotericaNice, you should dust it off, I think it's not overly difficult once you get powered up and the music is pretty catchy too :)
@TheKayliedGamerChannel-TH-cam I’ll get back around to it one day
You are right about this looking like a SNES game....Kinda looks like Axelay.
Def some similar vibes going on
I share your sentiments regarding Soldier Blade, everything about this game is on point. I do not own the TurboGarfx 16 but played it via emulation. Would you happen to know if it is available on the Mister, I would love to revisit it soon as I get my MisterPi
Yep PC Engine and PC Engine CD cores exist
@@VideoGameEsoterica Great stuff, I'm glad to know
Hi-tech for hi-touch. OK, NEC.
Haha it’s not a bad slogan
If your powerups are deploying immediately upon gaining them, I think you're unintentionally pressing I somehow. That isn't supposed to happen.
"Low" is actually your ship speed. Press select to increase it to high.
Was wondering about this myself. Button stuck issue? Being able to 'stock' powerups and switch to a differet weapon type after using one as a 'bomb' is a big part of the gameplay that is now ignored!
best first level? the desert one in thunder force 4
the best shmup? based on personal nostalgia? also tf4, or r-type on the gameboy.
Thunder Force IV does have a great intro
Best shmup is so hard. Just like best zelda..zelda 1 and 2 on nes are already so different let alone if you add botw and now echoes. Yo, did you hear that Ryujinx was shut down by Nintendo? They actually did that nearly an hour ago. I was thinking that you would do a video on it
Check my uploads
@@VideoGameEsoterica I already am aware. I actually saw it a few seconds after writing this, as the video did not pop up in my subscriptions
Damn YT not notifying people
I really Like it, BUT I like Final Soldier a little Bit more. It is a personal reference, do don't kill me for that. Soldier Blade is a really close 2nd place for me.
And i May be one of the few people that also Love Image Fight and Dragon Spirit and Dragon Saber.
Haha everyone gets an opinion here :)
I actually prefer Super Star Soldier in the Series, but it's more a nostalgia thing I'm certain 😅
@@TheKayliedGamerChannel-TH-cam i Love all three to be honest.grrat Games alltogether, and each one is Lot of fun.
the best
Def high up on the list
Also Soulja Boy’s favorite videogame
🤣 you can play it on his handheld
#pewpew
Haha indeed
