TFL Rail - Class 315 vs Class 345 (Old vs New)

  • The Class 345 entered service Mid-June...since then I have been trying to film it. It had been cancelled 3 times prior to this trip. I thought I would do an "Old vs New" type video because I have not seen one on these two units yet.
    Also, I prefer the 315s simply because they are not plastic or generic.

    Love the modern look of the 345s, great they're built in Britain too. Those 315s are extremely well kept though for their age and usage. Well done TFL rail and their operator.

      Nope, MTR is the operator. TfL just regulate the service. London Overground also isn't ran by TfL, it's actually ran by Arriva but regulated by TfL

      I can agree with the 315 statement, but not the 345. I don't like the way they look, and I certainly am not a fan of the black front!

      southwest455 The 315s are showing their age now, there’s no way that they’re fit for a 21st century service. The 345s on the other hand have the capacity to operate the kind of service that Crossrail will be. IMO the 345s look quite sleek and any other colour on the front would likely look wrong with the livery, especially yellow.

      Considering the 345s will be like tube trains for some of their E-line journies, they are following tube styling with no yellow (it could be coincidence). Obviously it’s black as the regulationsno longer require them, but yellow wouldn’t work with the units.

      Ethano williamo usb ports? Why on earth would they NEED usb ports. There is ZERO need for them on trains.

      Chris Dans usb ports to charge your phone. People can easily spend 1hour+ on these trains if they live in reading and work in Canary wharf etc. Electric buses used on the 507 and 521 have usb ports, refurbished x26 buses have usb ports
      Alot of national rail trains have usb ports and tfl announced new DLR trains with usb ports so why do these trains (which will probably be in use until around 2050) not have the basic necessity of usb ports

      you should know! Only on intercity, Regional or even on express journeys are possible to see the toilet but you can also go to the toilet on station toilet just before train arrives! is that right to you! and also i can understand these announcements you guys just got ringing ears!! when train comes! dont be jealous!

      The commuter trains in malaysia have the same type of seat too but strangely i dont find it uncomfortable

    The London overground trains to Cheshunt Chingford and Enfield all use the same type of train as the old TFL rail, only their interior consists of orange handlebars and faded orange/brown seats. I want to know where TFL get there faded seats to put in regenerated trains as the greater anglia interior is a much darker blue.
    I also think that more could be done to make the carriages more spacious and more accessible on the aforementioned overground line as the Stratford to Richmond or Clapham junction line has loads of new clean and spacious trains. The seats should also be higher so you can rest your head on them. Still, at least they are not as thin as the class 700 on SWR or Thameslink

    I would prefer the 345, but the longitudinal seating is awful. it's the main reason i don't use the Overground tbh. You can't have a railway that runs long distances over ground that doesn't let you see out! its horrible! at least these trains don't have the postbox windows of the Overground trains. I can understand the spaces for wheelchairs, but the other longitudinal seats are really pointless and space inefficient (seating 3 in the space of 4). One could argue you can stand more in that space, but from experience on the Metropolitan Line at the absolute worst times of the day, it never, EVER gets that bad, and if it does, you can be guaranteed that a small amount of extra standing room isn't going to help (look at the Central Line).

    I like the 345, there are the screens that display announcements, the map of the line, etc. It also just feels mroe modern but I will miss the sound of the 315.

    Just so you know, the seats that are in pairs (or threes), at 90 degrees to the windows are transverse seating, as opposed to longitudinal.

    315 for everything else

    My question is: when they switch out all of the 315s for the 345s, can’t they just put the leftover trains onto Northern UK railways to replace those pacer trains?

    315 is nicer because they sound like a class 507 and class 508 and i love the 314 as well

      The 315 has a more lower and a louder sound motor as it slowly accelerates, especially in the motor coach. The others don't have that low motor noise

    I'm not that keen on the new stock 345's, for the following reasons:
    The seating is far to hard, and the train has the feel of a tube train, as the continual announcements of "please mind the gap between the train and platform" were not prudent, as was, most platforms were widened to take the new stock. In that case, the trains should have wider foot plates fitted. The trains have irritating cold areas due to air-conditioning, so I had to move from seat to seat on my journey. I dislikes those forward-facing seats two set seats as uncomfortable.
    "Via Stratford" was not needed when leaving Liverpool Street, as the journey was not via Cambridge Heath. Disliked the door buzzing, and preferred the 1980's 315 EMU's due to the softer seats and warmth of years of use, and will be a sad day when they are moved on.
    Yes, the new trains are bright and airy, great modern feel, but add nothing new, other than walk through carriages, most of what you heard were gimmicks, and needed modifying. 10 out of 10?. I give the 345's 7 out of 10.

      It is a TfL run service, soon to be absorbed into the Elizabeth Line and Crossrail was originally planned out as a joint British Rail and London Transport run service, so the 345s were bound to have similarities/specifications with the Tube. Plus there are TfL/London Underground safety regulations they have to adhere to as the trains will run through deep level tunnels and stations when the line fully opens.

      I remember the 315's replacing the 310's ! I remember thinking what a sad day this is ! No more horse hair and sprung seats, no more slam doors, it was a very poor replacement, but they are so antiquated themselves now.

      on weekdays it runs the 1035 and 1235...
      on saturday it runs the 1156
      no service on sunday :)

    345 much more sleeker.
    Many new trains have seats that are not as comfortable because of safety regulations.
    Grown up with the 315, too oldschool now they are.

      TheLemonizer, Why should the North, Wales and the South West get old trains. They should get new trains like London, not old cast offs. The Class 315 is 40 years old. Replace Pacers with new trains not old life expired stock.

    I’m not a fan of walk through carriages at all I think it’s just the thought that if a fire breaks out there’s nowhere to separate yourself from the coach that’s on fire. Apart from that still prefer the old units any day of the week

    I reckon the one of the 315 will be restored in its original British Rail blue and grey livery to mark the farewell gesture of these units. The class 315s could be permanently withdrawn & probably scrapped due to thier age.

    I did like the new feel and aesthetics of the 345 but the the 315 seemed faster and more robust. Tough choice but i agree the 315 just pips it for me

    0:50 i can hear the announcements just fine? if anything it’s better than the old trains since the new trains have better recordings and it’s more sound proof than the old ones making it more clearer

    Wish the 355s had a flatter front , I prefer the flat fronts anyway, but the body looks similar to a 465 which Is why i like it

    I have never been on a 345 but I have seen them at Ilford Depot when going past on a class 315

    At least the new trains employ the correct announcement: "This is the train TO ..... " whereas the older train using the "This is the train FOR....."
    Ugh! Creeps me out when they say "For...."

    I personally don't like longitudinal seating on anything other than short-hop trains because they force most people to stand for extended periods as soon as things get moderately busy. That purple upholstery looks tacky as well.
    That said I'm sure the air con will be welcomed on hot summer days. Whats going to happen to the 315s? They seem much too good to scrap!

      Who knows but they are old, about 40 years old. They have a maximum speed of 75 mph. As South Wales electrification has been postponed, it is most likely they will be scrapped.

    I realy can't stand this comment section. think of it from a logical perspective obviously the 345 is the superior train I mean that's kind of whole point in building new trains so that they do a better job than their older counterparts. and this whole the class 315 sound better bullshit isn't even close to a valid argument who actually gives a shit about what giant hunk of metal on wheels sounds like. in order for the railways to function their needs to be constant improvements take Japan for example.

    This line will become partly underground, thats why the class345 seats location is different
    But the seats really need more soft and improve the announcement

    Awful trains in my opinion. Not a fan of the 345s :/ I saw a 315 on Friday but it was not in service and i dont know where it was going, shame otherwise i would have tried to get on it
