Black men, what were the earliest messages you received about sex? Who taught you them? How did they make you feel? Do you still agree with those messages? What happens if the man says no?
Let's just be real, most of our sex education was trash bruh. What the hell are the birds and bees anyway? At some point in our lives we all received terrible advice from family, the media, porn, homies, teachers, partners about what our role as Black men in sex should be. Most of it did not truly have our best interests in mind.
Not to mention, when it comes to sex, consent was barely part of the conversation. There are so many stories of young Black boys first experiences of sex involving someone close to them taking advantage of them. We simply don't talk about it enough. But it happens. And on the flipside, our sex education or lack thereof put us in the position to harm our partners at alarming rates as well. This is what happens when we prioritize control, power, domination, and performance over pleasure, consent, intimacy and and connection.
So fellas, let's all take a minute to reflect. When it comes to sex, what message were harmful? What messages keep us safe?

My education about it was 100% bible based. Soley focused on what was right and wrong morally in the eyes of God and the ordained purpose of sex and marriage between a man and woman. I'm gay. My first therapy session is this Tuesday...I'm 37

Damn!! Such a vulnerable and powerful conversation!! I always felt weirdly confident about my sexual education because I learned from porn stars and sex workers who were surprisingly (at the time) adept with communicating all of that info in their behind-the-scenes shows and interviews. To me, the internet and HBO after dark/skinemax were my teachers, lol.. that sounds like it should be a recipe for disaster, but I somehow managed to find the sensible information rather than all the toxic stuff (perhaps the good stuff was just easier to find in the early internet).
But that education is ongoing of course! I learn a lot now by listening to my partner, looking up blogs and shows like this, and the occasional wholesome community.
