I find it extraordinarily odd that a white creator (who has signed an exclusive deal and was given the opportunity to interview the CEO of the company no less) says twice in a span of 3 minutes, that he "doesn't believe YT employees are racist". And proceeds to use an example that doesn't equate in the actions YT took. Its very important to understand that YT used another video to effectively "check" the contents of a black creator in this instance. The first decision was de facto - non-black creator has same video, we can approve. The damning decision by YT that enforces the belief there is prejudice in the decision making or policy enforcing process is that they used another creator's content to validate the work of another -- not to levy the same penalty (which they did with Charlie/Mark) and subsequently attempted to rectify with Cory/Mark. The double back tracking, along with the immediate rejection of the appeal is where this has traction. And this ought to be discussed objectively by people like Ludwig and asking the questions as to WHY this may have happened and not going straight to "IT CANT BE THIS".
I think it’s better than the alternative which many other companies take, which is to always double down and never revert anything. While yes, I very much agree that TH-cam guidelines are clearly not clear enough or are enforced inconsistently among employees, it has nothing to do with racism or anything like it. I think what is happening is these controversial cases are getting moved to higher ups at TH-cam, like a Supreme Court kinda where they are the final say on the interpretation of the rules, which I personally think would be an excellent way of doing it if it is true. Ie: first time is just some random employee, appeal might be his boss, talks after that is the Supreme Court setting a president.
Timeline as of right now - Cory’s video got age restricted then the video got de age restricted then his video got re age restricted along with markipliers video then after that Cory’s video got de age restricted but markipliers videos still age restricted
Cory is like the most advertiser friendly dude on the platform. Hes funny, responsible, he doesnt swear, he makes somewhat family friendly content, hes a man of god, and on top of all that, hes honestly hands down one of THE BEST most wholesome youtubers on here. Love you cory!

you left out the most important part of the Cory situation. The only times that he’s ever been scrutinized or age restricted is whenever he comes back to the platform and gets #1 trending for multiple days in a row.

The crazy thing is that even thought I understand the favoritism from youtube, since I believe creators can build reputations of not being controversial or rule breakers, but what I just can't understand why Cory is not on that list, he's a kid friendly youtuber, that censors his swearing and stays abiding the rules, while getting millions of views, so why is he not getting the same treatment as Mark, Jack, Mr Beast etc...

The thing with TH-cam is that they hate doing manual reviews. So that probably their AI giving False negatives reviews, and when called out they're probably trust The AI and Demonitise both. And when they get called out again they're like "Okay, okay. were gonna review it..." and when he called TH-cam racist, they were like "You Know What? F YOU!"

you're right, but in terms of this video's monetization it's kind of a lose-lose: - if it remains monetized, they aren't being consistent and are being discriminatory - if it is demonetized, they're not responsive or supportive to community outcry of unfair treatment
I do think it’s ridiculous that somewhere in TH-cam there’s some kind of spite striking any time anyone calls them out for their decisions, but I don’t think that it looks bad when they go back on that decision as Lud says - The fact that they did it is bad, but going back on it shows a level of integrity where they don’t engage in cognitive dissonance and refuse to admit that any dumb thing they do is wrong and make the site worse without listening to its user base. Definitely it shouldn’t happen in the first place, but I don’t think Lud should admonish them being able to say “we were wrong”. I’m curious to hear what other people think on this view though!
I think in both cases the problem is they doubled down first. If they immediately walked back the age restriction/demonetisation then it can be seen as showing integrity and realising their mistake but by doubling down first then walking it back after further backlash it just looks like pandering to the community. Further, this is not a site for just sharing video content anymore, people rely on TH-cam as an employer for their livelihood and the flimsy and often times inconsistent way in which they can both apply and revoke the application of guidelines is a real issue. YT walking back their punishment again shows further favouritism as even though they are less liked than Mark, they are both still large creators that can cause uproar and smaller channels just can’t do that and will suffer unfair consequences

Take Pokemon for instance, the quality of many of their games in recent years is lacking, however people still buy the games and praise the developers for pushing back deadlines or when they patch certain issues - when in fact that should be the bare minimum, and doing such praise lets them get away with it. Back in the current context, I suppose it becomes an issue of, as you say, livelihood on the line, not just a mistake that can be walked back to square one so easily. So maybe i'm being a little to generous with my own "forgiveness" of their actions..? Idk haha
I think it's important people can still criticise them and they actually listen. And that should probably happen more than it does right now, especially when it's about small creators. So yes, I agree. TH-cam has a tendency to react immature, a "you don't like parts of this thing we do? Well then we'll stop it entirely and *also* take the good parts away". This attitude makes navigating discussions really difficult and creators find it even harder to reach out and shape a platform we all enjoy.

Tbh he reminds me of PewDiePie about 5-8 years ago when he started calling out TH-cam. I believe they're successful enough and have proven they can start again from scratch and live off it.
This is why we are where we are. Nothing new, it is the same favoritism as you see on Twitch when some streamers break TOS and get a mild slap on the wrist (short ban) and smaller streamers get banned for day up on days for something laughable.
I only disagree with the Charlie point based off Cory’s video, unlike the yard for example where the language is unhinged, he beeps his out, so ya you can argue heavy favoritism depending on the creator but he’s right that if his content is either the same or possibly better for all ages then someone else I’m with Cory where this leads to something beyond just personal bias at TH-cam

@@craydussy At least my understanding of Ludwigs point is that it is unlikely be race related because TH-cam has shown in the past to be biased towards less marketable creators, but if Cory is already doing more then some of the more "marketable" creators to be advertiser friendly then what does that leave. So correct me if I am wrong but your saying the person flagging at youtube just has personal bias against Cory, cuz Markiplier is not the only creator that got away with the same posts without being flagged. But in this instance my argument its is more likely race related which is still technically bias. But what options does it leave, Cory's content is not far off from other creators that dont get flagged so if its not likely actually content related then its the creator. In this case you could say the youtube employees dont like his delivery or how he speaks but the most obvious discerning factor of him vs other similar creators is race.
It's insane how much of this could be solved by TH-cam just communicating with people. They never tell anybody anything and then act shocked when people are left with no choice but to speculate one what the problem could be.
Thank you for speaking on this. I feel many larger youtubers that agree with you, that TH-cam does have favorites, but they're scared to speak out on this topic because of TH-cams' action against those who have talked about this issue. I hope large scale growth occurs at some point, but a restructuring of TH-cam may be needed for this to occur.
a problem TH-cam has is they keep denying problems but then trying to fix those problems as quick as possible, often not actually fixing anything and just taking videos down to try and shut people up. the problem is when a video is demonetized or is age restricted, that creator will not get money on that video weather or not its removed. When they removed the dislikes they told us it was to help smaller creators but in reality it helps hide the videos that people dont like and try and tell others to not watch. every time we watch a video where a dislike is given, it still gives that creator money that they should not have gotten. to fix this they need to 1 remove the like count as well and 2, when a video is demonetized or age restricted, they need to calculate how much the video makes, if it is appealed the money needs to be given back to the creator for the error. Age restricting another video that has the same content but is older does nothing good for the creator who was age restricted in the first place. nothing was lost to anyone except the creator in question. youtube needs to admit their bias problem and come up with a plan to do better. denying there is a problem does FUCKING NOTHING.
It just doesn’t make sense because Cory is one of the most ad-friendly TH-camrs out there. He doesn’t curse and also edits out cursing in games he plays. It has to be something more than just “playing favorites” because he has a huge channel.
I personally think one of the reasons Mark is treated well is that he's been around a while, i'm pretty sure some youtube employees saw him, and looked up to him, as teens or children. And because of this, i don't think they'd want to give a strike to a childhood idol.

If you go to TH-cam’s advertising page, there’s two lists that you can see TH-cam uses for content creators that are monetized that would factor into “favoritism”. 1. Age rating: every TH-cam channel and TH-cam video is given an age rating that is made secret to both the viewer and creator that can affect how likely they are to appear in recommendations (also why TH-cam says demonetization doesn’t affect the algorithm. It doesn’t, age rating does and most demonetized videos are rated for mature audiences) 2. The “Advertiser Friendly” creator list: TH-cam has a list of creators that certain companies can choose only to put ads into that pool of creators. This was a quick solution from the adpoclypse that never left. Coincidentally, it is proven that Markiplier is on that list of advertising friendly creators.

Cory's video is the sentiment of a lot of black and poc creators have been feeling for years. TH-cam seems to know these issues but they are being wishy-washy with their solutions.
It’s not surprising that moderation is inconsistent at TH-cam, because it’s just too big a platform. There’s also going to be racial and gender biases from manual review because people have different biases, and so it’s something that’s extremely difficult for TH-cam to fix. It just isn’t possible for them to monitor all the manual reviewers to make sure there is no biases, so I don’t really see a solution for this apart from appealing.
Whenever Cory posts he gets millions of views, hundred of thousands of likes. Cory doesn’t cuss he bleeps out cuss words in the games he plays. he’s most family friendly you can get. when he did his security breach five nights at Freddy series that thing got millions of views for seven days straight and millions of likes. Cory trends almost every time he uploads a video. how is he not someone that makes them Hella money? How was he not one of your favorites in the gaming part of TH-cam? Susan needs to have a sit-down, candid conversation with other creators who are black & of color. I've seen her sit with MatPat, Logan/Jake (hard to tell the diff TBH) & the like but no one of color. In order to address these matters, they need to talk to creators like Cory, JiDion, etc. You are all effective employees of YT & deserve the civil sincerity & support of HR as would be received by any other company.

It's like ASMR rich getting his gun vids demonitized while other gun tubers have kept their monitization. It's a problem for the gun community as a whole, the videos often get demonitized, no matter if they're educational or anything of the sort, but rich especially was getting bullied by TH-cam for quite a while.
It’s a very big jump to claim racism in this situation and that could be counteractive for future issues should they arise. But a claim can be made for favoritism, I just think that jumping to the racism point won’t help either point he was trying to make as much.

Not trying to be dismissive, but in my opinion TH-cam policy being inconsistent is a tale as old as any, right? Talking about "racism" here seems like a bit of an overreaction and while I don't think Cory intended this but, a load of self victimisation as well. The internal bias you spoke of is fundamentally impossible to rule out as long as humans are involved without having to send every minor decision up the chain of command to the top(expensive and inefficient). It's not implausible to say that two different mods have very different interpretations of the "blood and gore" policy of TH-cam or heck, the same guy's mood can make a difference in enforcement of these vague policies.

if ultimately that's the case, and this is their platform then the favoritism is never really going to go away as they are fundamentally driven by ad dollars. They will always continue treading this line between just open enough to not miss out on the next big trend and have that go exclusively to their competitors and hyping their preferred content which is always going to be the content that gets ad buys. Especially as the marketing funds contract, as they certainly will during a recession/downturn in our economy solely ran on vibes.
my only critique is that favoritism and racism can be synonymous. it’s an implicit bias that even the moderators themselves may not fully be aware of. To me, this is a problem that cannot be overcome even by advancements in AI moderation. TH-cam needs to just admit that the system isn’t perfect and that dying on the denial hill is an even worse look.
I'm typically a fan of your takes but I think you should look a bit further into Cory's channel to see there is no reason TH-cam shouldn't like him He has a great community that brings in a lot of views while being ad friendly. Even has a religious background without really forcing it into his videos which really just makes him more ad friendly in America at least. In all sense to TH-cam, he should be one of the favorites. There is no doubt he would bring a ton of money while looking great for the company and even a symbol of diversity. I do think it’s ridiculous that somewhere in TH-cam there’s some kind of spite striking any time anyone calls them out for their decisions, but I don’t think that it looks bad when they go back on that decision as Lud says - The fact that they did it is bad, but going back on it shows a level of integrity where they don’t engage in cognitive dissonance and refuse to admit that any dumb thing they do is wrong and make the site worse without listening to its user base. Definitely it shouldn’t happen in the first place, but I don’t think Lud should admonish them being able to say “we were wrong”.

I think in both cases the problem is they doubled down first. If they immediately walked back the age restriction/demonetisation then it can be seen as showing integrity and realising their mistake but by doubling down first then walking it back after further backlash it just looks like pandering to the community. Further, this is not a site for just sharing video content anymore, people rely on TH-cam as an employer for their livelihood and the flimsy and often times inconsistent way in which they can both apply and revoke the application of guidelines is a real issue. YT walking back their punishment again shows further favouritism as even though they are less liked than Mark, they are both still large creators that can cause uproar and smaller channels just can’t do that and will suffer unfair consequences

Take Pokemon for instance, the quality of many of their games in recent years is lacking, however people still buy the games and praise the developers for pushing back deadlines or when they patch certain issues - when in fact that should be the bare minimum, and doing such praise lets them get away with it. Back in the current context, I suppose it becomes an issue of, as you say, livelihood on the line, not just a mistake that can be walked back to square one so easily. So maybe i'm being a little to generous with my own "forgiveness" of their actions..? Idk haha
I think it's important people can still criticise them and they actually listen. And that should probably happen more than it does right now, especially when it's about small creators. So yes, I agree. TH-cam has a tendency to react immature, a "you don't like parts of this thing we do? Well then we'll stop it entirely and *also* take the good parts away". This attitude makes navigating discussions really difficult and creators find it even harder to reach out and shape a platform we all enjoy.

also to add onto the charlie strike situation i feel like youtube also wouldnt typically like charlie as he is a twitch partner and they wouldnt want to make their users go over on twitch and help them out, which is also why i believe that you dont really see any twitch creators get much traction here on youtube unless they either made their account after they got big, or they got help from someone else to get traction

Nothing new, it is the same favoritism as you see on Twitch when some streamers break TOS and get a mild slap on the wrist (short ban) and smaller streamers get banned for day up on days for something laughable.
I only disagree with the Charlie point based off Cory’s video, unlike the yard for example where the language is unhinged, he beeps his out, so ya you can argue heavy favoritism depending on the creator but he’s right that if his content is either the same or possibly better for all ages then someone else I’m with Cory where this leads to something beyond just personal bias at TH-cam

@@craydussy At least my understanding of Ludwigs point is that it is unlikely be race related because TH-cam has shown in the past to be biased towards less marketable creators, but if Cory is already doing more then some of the more "marketable" creators to be advertiser friendly then what does that leave. So correct me if I am wrong but your saying the person flagging at youtube just has personal bias against Cory, cuz Markiplier is not the only creator that got away with the same posts without being flagged. But in this instance my argument its is more likely race related which is still technically bias. But what options does it leave, Cory's content is not far off from other creators that dont get flagged so if its not likely actually content related then its the creator. In this case you could say the youtube employees dont like his delivery or how he speaks but the most obvious discerning factor of him vs other similar creators is race.

It's insane how much of this could be solved by TH-cam just communicating with people. They never tell anybody anything and then act shocked when people are left with no choice but to speculate one what the problem could be.
Thank you for speaking on this. I feel many larger youtubers that agree with you, that TH-cam does have favorites, but they're scared to speak out on this topic because of TH-cams' action against those who have talked about this issue. I hope large scale growth occurs at some point, but a restructuring of TH-cam may be needed for this to occur.

a problem TH-cam has is they keep denying problems but then trying to fix those problems as quick as possible, often not actually fixing anything and just taking videos down to try and shut people up. the problem is when a video is demonetized or is age restricted, that creator will not get money on that video weather or not its removed. When they removed the dislikes they told us it was to help smaller creators but in reality it helps hide the videos that people dont like and try and tell others to not watch. every time we watch a video where a dislike is given, it still gives that creator money that they should not have gotten. to fix this they need to 1 remove the like count as well and 2, when a video is demonetized or age restricted, they need to calculate how much the video makes, if it is appealed the money needs to be given back to the creator for the error. Age restricting another video that has the same content but is older does nothing good for the creator who was age restricted in the first place. nothing was lost to anyone except the creator in question. youtube needs to admit their bias problem and come up with a plan to do better. denying there is a problem does FUCKING NOTHING.
It just doesn’t make sense because Cory is one of the most ad-friendly TH-camrs out there. He doesn’t curse and also edits out cursing in games he plays. It has to be something more than just “playing favorites” because he has a huge channel.

If you go to TH-cam’s advertising page, there’s two lists that you can see TH-cam uses for content creators that are monetized that would factor into “favoritism”. 1. Age rating: every TH-cam channel and TH-cam video is given an age rating that is made secret to both the viewer and creator that can affect how likely they are to appear in recommendations (also why TH-cam says demonetization doesn’t affect the algorithm. It doesn’t, age rating does and most demonetized videos are rated for mature audiences) 2. The “Advertiser Friendly” creator list: TH-cam has a list of creators that certain companies can choose only to put ads into that pool of creators. This was a quick solution from the adpoclypse that never left. Coincidentally, it is proven that Markiplier is on that list of advertising friendly creators.

Cory's video is the sentiment of a lot of black and poc creators have been feeling for years. TH-cam seems to know these issues but they are being wishy-washy with their solutions.
It’s not surprising that moderation is inconsistent at TH-cam, because it’s just too big a platform. There’s also going to be racial and gender biases from manual review because people have different biases, and so it’s something that’s extremely difficult for TH-cam to fix. It just isn’t possible for them to monitor all the manual reviewers to make sure there is no biases, so I don’t really see a solution for this apart from appealing.

Susan needs to have a sit-down, candid conversation with other creators who are black & of color. I've seen her sit with MatPat, Logan/Jake (hard to tell the diff TBH) & the like but no one of color. In order to address these matters, they need to talk to creators like Cory, JiDion, etc. You are all effective employees of YT & deserve the civil sincerity & support of HR as would be received by any other company.

It's a problem for the gun community as a whole, the videos often get demonitized, no matter if they're educational or anything of the sort, but rich especially was getting bullied by TH-cam for quite a while.
It’s a very big jump to claim racism in this situation and that could be counteractive for future issues should they arise. But a claim can be made for favoritism, I just think that jumping to the racism point won’t help either point he was trying to make as much.

Talking about "racism" here seems like a bit of an overreaction and while I don't think Cory intended this but, a load of self victimisation as well.
The internal bias you spoke of is fundamentally impossible to rule out as long as humans are involved without having to send every minor decision up the chain of command to the top(expensive and inefficient).
It's not implausible to say that two different mods have very different interpretations of the "blood and gore" policy of TH-cam or heck, the same guy's mood can make a difference in enforcement of these vague policies.
then shouldn't TH-cam's policies be clearer so that people dont come to these sorts of conclusions? if the exact same content can be passed by one mod and age restricted by another, that means that youtube did a bad job clearing things up with the mods that sort through content.

With this kind of stuff, you need to think about it like as if youtube was an office space, this is lawsuit worthy at work
if ultimately that's the case, and this is their platform then the favoritism is never really going to go away as they are fundamentally driven by ad dollars. They will always continue treading this line between just open enough to not miss out on the next big trend and have that go exclusively to their competitors and hyping their preferred content which is always going to be the content that gets ad buys. Especially as the marketing funds contract, as they certainly will during a recession/downturn in our economy solely ran on vibes.

my only critique is that favoritism and racism can be synonymous. it’s an implicit bias that even the moderators themselves may not fully be aware of. To me, this is a problem that cannot be overcome even by advancements in AI moderation. TH-cam needs to just admit that the system isn’t perfect and that dying on the denial hill is an even worse look.

He has a great community that brings in a lot of views while being ad friendly. Even has a religious background without really forcing it into his videos which really just makes him more ad friendly in America at least. In all sense to TH-cam, he should be one of the favorites. There is no doubt he would bring a ton of money while looking great for the company and even a symbol of diversity.
