These guys are so good. To put into words the mechanics of singing only true artisans can do. FRANK SINATRA is a good example. he's so flawless and i could not hear it until I got older.
Soul has changed for me from living "the struggle" to being an expression. It is a communication of the emotions the song is requiring. Depending on the maturity and life experiences of a singer they have the ability to communicate and transfer those emotions to you properly. That is the SOUL i feel.
Soul music derived from blues….blues evolved from pain during slavery and the wordless hymns they used to articulate the tragedy they experienced. So soul music can be mimicked but not truly replicated.
My Goodness, Stevie you are amazing!!! I am an aspiring Gospel minister/artiste, but I want to do Rnb and jazz to teach people about Jesus and His purposes for their lives... I am blessed by this video and its lessons. I am not really into secular...but the impact I get from your videos are helpful and I look foward to meeting you one day
VERY GOOD VIDEO DISCUSSION: My definition of SOUL is an individuals outward expression of how the song (lyrics, music and story) moves you/ makes you feel which expresses itself as how you perform/sing/ act out the song when you sing it.. I've discovered in my home recording studio that I can sing a song several times and each time I felt a little different or was in a different mindset and that leads to a different expression of that song. I've noticed it when singing in public If I sing a song in the morning I may feel one way, when I sing that same song later in the evening I feel different and my outward expression of that song is different. The words are the same obviously but I may speed up or slow down some words/ lines which give the song a different feel than it did earlier in the day. GREAT TOPIC.
Soul is the FEELING, singing with FEELING, playing with FEELING, and being able to ARTICULATE that feeling. When you hear it, YOU KNOW IT. It resonates with you.......😏 When you hear Chris Stapleton sing "Tennessee Whiskey", it hits like a brick through a plate glass window, bcuz that man is singing FROM HIS SOUL. He's "lived" that song. SOUL is a thing that has to be experienced, and felt. You can't teach it. You either have it to begin with, or you don't. That's it. Great video, interesting subject.
I always thought that soul was something that only "we" possessed until I saw the story on Aretha Franklin and found out that those white guys in Muscle Shoals Alabama wrote those soul songs for her that basically put her on the map.
I think you can describe soul as you guys are… it was a pretty good description Btw but Im not sure you can teach it either… I believe you can definitely inspire it though which in a way how you can teach maybe
Our souls can be dark or light depending on where we are at in our lives FYI I have learned there are 656 feelings to articulate what we are experiencing... Happy sad mad scared...we need to ackowlege, allow, walk beside, witness, Support, lift up...let it be Loss or grief is acknowledged in song. The respect & space is given to the humanity of that child, senior , woman, criminal, or person of colour, in order of their vulnerability Shalom. which means Be Whole, it is every religious sect. Thanks for everything I am a singer, been writing poetry since I was 3. I wrote a childrens prayer... can you play keys on it? Ill pay you,
I definitely get where this conversation is going. I do believe soul can be found, tapped into when you are not trying to achieve perfection but authenticity, a connection. I'll just say that when I was learning the guitar, there were common notes that you could find in almost any rock song. There were also common notes that were the bedrock of R&B and gospel. Those notes were somewhat more complex to play because there was a blend of notes to get that same sound/feeling. So, maybe soul is simply a complex blend of sound and if that sound is what you are used to hearing, that is your bedrock or foundation. That would simply mean if you want to have soul or learn or teach it, you have to put in that same foundation.
Soul has nothing to do with god or religion. Having a soul if that’s what one believes is a completely different thing than having soul. Soul also I agree cannot be taught. That being said, it’s not something you teach, it’s something you access. It’s that feeling inside. It’s love, hate, disdain, happiness, sadness, anxiety, humor, etc., all together in one place. We need to get vulnerable to express that soul, which is our life. I also agree you can express this in anything your decide to express it in. That’s your choice. Society has suppressed people to never show all of ourselves. Essentially shaming us for feeling. It has taken our choice away by creating that environment. I suspect that’s why people have such a hard time accessing soul.

I love how your friend explained this ❤❤

Stevie, you have a beautiful soul. It shines.

Stevie what you described is spirit and soul. You have both.
Epigenetics is the reason those of African descent in America have a direct connection to soulful sounds and feelings

Same applies to dancing & food!!😁💯👏🏾👏🏾
Very interesting conversation, couldn't agree more. To me soul is the truth, period.

Thank you for bringing this conversation outside the box of race. Soul is individualized.

ARETHA FRANKLIN, The QUEEN of SOUL th-cam.com/video/qL8A7vT_avY/w-d-xo.html Explains, Soul starts at @1:20

You have no idea how miserable a person can be if they have soul, but can’t sing. I feel but I don’t have a singing voice. I’m trapped in my body
Soul is organic is what Avery is trying to say
My issue is when I add soul I start to sing off key! 😢😅😂
Ever heard of Tina Marie and jon b. Helllooooo! Lol
Avery hit it to a T👍🏾

Can you both, together, cover Holding Back the Years, by Simply Red to also show Soul
There is soul then there is souuuuullllllllllll in music..souuuuulllllllll cannot never be taught

One more… sorry, Can you think of 1 Beyonce performances where you consider her giving soul… She’s my all time Favorite singer btw lol
Soul is tought to be felt.. Why can't you be like GOD!.. I swear i will theach everyone!..
Def not kelly clarkson soul like a mug i love her
YAhuAh is the name of the Creator.
Also a lot of people like to say Beyonce doesn’t have a soulful voice… can you explain what they mean or why someone would say that?
I've even heard some say she can't sing! Which makes me want to choose violence! lol... like wth?
I think it's because she's so regimented in performance, it's almost robotic
People said Whitney Houston and Mary J couldn't sing.
They make robots that laugh and cry now :/

Are we confusing SOUL with STYLE? I think so.
