Thanks for dropping knowledge of the voice! I love what you’re saying about bringing feelings to a song! Riffing and running will get you no where without feelings and the words relationship! If this message should be given to today’s singers, I’m glad it’s both you. They will listen because of your true talent!

different cultures define riffs and runs differently, i always saw riffs as a melisma that doesn’t have a specific direction or even a set interval, melodically speaking, and runs as scalar/linear patterns (usually the pentatonic scale but not necessarily). a similar line of thinking to avery but not the same. id say riffs also tend to be shorter. id also argue that there are things out there that are both riffs and runs, and there are also runs that are composed of multiple riffs

Such a cool conversation. It’s also cool to look at the best singers at riffing and running and most of them when they perform their songs or even covers of songs, they don’t always do the exact same run or riff that they may have recorded

I'm sick of the obsession of riffs and runs some people think if you can't do riffs and runs thinking you cant sing and all that craziness ...... As a singer myself I don't really care for them at all I'll do it tine to time but I'm not doing the most with them and i prefer jazz scatting its more creative for me ......

Yes I agree you don’t have to know how to riff it be a great singer, however, someone who can belt compared to someone who can belt and riff is technically a worse singer, because if the voice is not agile then it is not as free as it can be

Riffs and runs, actually riffs and runs takes away from a song if done too much. Most singers that do riffs and runs too much don't have quality sounding voices. I am a quality man. Just as Anita Baker stated years back. She is about quality.

Improvising or riffs, runs, pentatonic singing up and down are much better appreciated in concert during live performance. When recording in the studio riffs and runs and phrases should be kept to a respectable minimum, in my opinion

Stevie borrowed a lot from Donny Hathaway. It's obvious how Stevie's style morphed, after Donny"s phrasing.

Some of these now singers attempt to do these riffs & runs and have a tendency to sing off key. It's a disaster.

  • @poerava

Too many riffs and runs fam
    Way too many
    They should be used sparingly.
    They take from the song.
I listen to Beyoncé’s verse in ‘the closer I get to you’ rendition with Luther.
The amount of riffs and runs she uses in that song is perfect.
    Not over done.
