This is by far my favorite version of Battletoads. It's violent, fast-paced and straight up fun entirely except the last stage which was a on-rails shooting level but still I rather play this over than the SNES version.

The Dark Queen was probably my favorite video game villain of all time. Evil, emperor and a total babe. Charismatic and funny, she made a great villain for the themes of Battletoads. But so many games didn’t make use of her in an actual, well executed conflict. Even in the arcade, you fight a robot with her projection in the background. I think maybe only the original game had a fight that did her power justice

Arcade beat 'em ups were a dying genre at the time, and Rare's DKC series was a success, so they focused on these.
No matter how great a game is, it will be put to the side if it doesn't gain enough profit. That, and while first Battletoads infamous difficulty was accepted, since it was a novelty, the later games keeping a frustrating and unfair difficulty level just narrowed down the potential fanbase, especially wirh more and more beat 'em ups with a better balanced gameplay kept popping up.

A local laundry mat that my mom frequented during my childhood had this game. I played it every single time we were there! I don’t recall the blood being in the game aside from battle damage to bosses. I’m sure the owners had the blood turned off. I never made it past the third level.
I also had the VHS of that pilot episode. I took it to elementary school one day. Someone stole the tape and replaced it with an episode of the Super Mario Bro 3 cartoon. At the time it didn’t bother me as much because I liked the Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon. But as time went on I was more bummed about it. Now learning that the pilot episode was the only episode, and not having come across it on streaming services, I’m more bummed that the tape was stolen. I’m a collector so I still have some VHS tapes. That would have been among them.

When they're with Nintendo they mostly focus on first party titles and titles Nintendo made them create like Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye 007, and Killer Instinct. Also the arcade game is different cause it was published by EA instead of Tradewest.

It's also pretty distinctly unfinished. You never fight The Dark Queen (final boss is Robo Manus, one of her usual henchmen), and there's portraits of the bosses on the wall during the next to last stage that includes Admiral Oink, who isn't in it. He was apparently supposed to be the boss of the snow stage, which explains Karnov's bizarre appearance. Professor T Bird and Angelica also never show up, though they have unused sprites in the game's code.

Karnath was going to be the boss of stage 4, The Cave Pit, which does not have a boss in the final version of the game. He was re-purposed to the second stage after they removed the Christmas-themed Oink. I remember reading an interview somewhere where one of the developer stated that they simply ran out of time, which is why the final stage took the form that it did and why the ending was so lackluster.

Agreed, the arcade game didn't kill Battletoads. By this point Battletoads and Double Dragon and Battletoads in Battlemaniacs had done that already. The arcade game, while extremely difficult, is pretty fun and a throwback to the fun early levels of the NES game but a commercial failure due to Battletoads already being dead.
But a quick correction: Battletoads weren't created in response to Ninja Turtles. In fact, their creator hadn't heard of the "Hero Turtles" yet. He had designed them when he was doodling back in high school and brought the notebooks out because Rare was looking for a corporate mascot (a la Bubsy, Sonic, or Mario). Of course, Rare saw them as the perfect answer to the Turtles, so that much is spot on.

The Battletoads Arcade game was quite good. IMO it was seriously hampered by having EA as the publisher. EA was well known at the time as a home computer and Genesis/Mega Drive game publisher but not at all in the arcade space. Also the game being a beat em up title released in December of 1994 (so basically 1995) also worked against it. For over 2 years one on one fighting games dominated the arcades at that point. Also, the Playstation & Saturn with their 3D polygon based graphics were coming soon and were being heavily pushed in the gaming press as the future of gaming.
In 1995 if you wanted to be competitive in the arcades you either had to be a well known arcade publisher (Sega, Capcom, Midway, SNK, etc.,) or a one on one fighting game or use 3D graphics. The Battletoads arcade game had none of those things going for it.

I saw this machine and it spoke to child me. "Beat me" so that was my absolute goal for the night. I spent about 8 hours bumming tokens off of anyone I could as I took this challenge on because I had to leave the machine to get tokens and that was no option! I did manage to complete this task and several years later I was reading a game informer magazine where it brought up how scarce the machines actually were. 2 in all of America one in some California arcade and the other at ceasarland in Warren Michigan. Saw this in a bowling alley. Got quite a bit of action.
Although it was repetitive in spots and killing the enemies one by one by one could get frustrating (much like Crime Fighters, you _really_ needed to embrace the hit-em-while-they're-down mechanic to get anywhere), I've always had a special fondness for this for two reasons. One, it's almost unheard of for a series to go from console to arcade and always awesome when it happens. And two, the toads actually **did what they were supposed to be doing, FIGHTING!** (C'mon, It's right there in the name!) None of this speeder bike wrecking, getting caught by the aggravating orb, racing the way-too-fast rat, bouncing across bizarrely turning snakes, flying through 2,000 obstacles, avoiding 2,000,000 spikes crap. It was beatings, blood, gore, severed heads, and bodies flying into the foreground from start to... almost the finish, where it switched to a fast-paced shootout. This was the Battletoads that _had_ to be made.
Yeah, it could get expensive. Welcome to arcade games.

The arcade version of battletoads is absolutely my favourite version of battletoads everything it has, the violence, the comedy, the gameplay, the music , the way the game works everything about it as an amazing combo that makes it one of my favourite thing to come out of the battle toads series

I must say the latest Battletoads art style is horrible. Who thought a bright and cute style was a good update to the original? It looks like a bad parody by comparison. The Dark Queen also looks laughable, like she should be a Dexter's Labatory character.

Battletoads Arcade was ignored because arcade owners weren’t investing in three player machines anymore. Also the franchise became diluted with all the various cameos in other games and consoles.
It’s was a great game that didn’t stand a chance during its release….

I'm very to see you making videos on one of my favorite video game franchises again! Honestly I wouldn't say this game "killed" the franchise, (Because I think this game is probably one of the best ones in the series) I just think the Battletoads series didn't really fit the feel of the kind of games Rare was starting to develop, mainly the N64 games.

The aracade version of Battletoads was way better than the console versions . No Turbo tunnel or that annoying snake level. I know people who owen the NES and SNES versions naever made it past 3rd stage (not counting the bonus level in the Battlemaniacs). That's why itvwas included on the Rare Replay and why Rash was in Xbox One's Killer Instinct.

If it wouldn't be one of the most unforgiving difficulty game in it's consoles and arcades, it wouldn't be Battletoads...
Impossible to forget this game, especially with Dark Queen and her cronies such as Robo Manus and Big Blag...
So many ways to get hit by a one turn kill attack in that game, like the turbo tunnel...

As a kid I didn't find Battletoads all that hard of a game, the Ninja Turtle game was unplayably hard to me however. But many years later I realized why...I played the game solo. On solo mode its not that hard, but when you try to have a second player it hinders a great deal of the game mechanics to the point of being detrimental to the players.

Of all the places that i found this game, it was at my local walmart by the entrance when i was in 6th grade. The violence was unexpected, but welcoming, b/c i had already played the first 3 mk games in other arcades. I enjoyed it until they replaced it with some bass fishing game a month or so later.

It wasn’t the Arcade that “killed” the series, but rather this supposed Animated Series that they tried to make in the early 90’s is what really sank the Franchise.
Of all the cartoons I saw while growing up, the Battletoads pilot was considered one of the WORST things that fans have ever seen, and it completely hurt Rare in the long run.
Overall, the Arcade was the last chance for Rare to keep Battletoads going, and even though it was successful, it wasn’t enough to save the actual franchise, thus they went into Limbo.
Yet, the way how some things are being either Rebooted or Reintroduced, there’s still a chance for Battletoads to make a comeback, through Netflix or Hulu, and also make a Much Better Series.

IMO the difficulty was what made Battletoads so divisive. I think it might have gotten more fans if it was either a straight up beat-em-up (as in, no crazy gimmick stages) or if all the vehicle stages and whatnot weren't crazy hard.
