    Leland Sklar you know what?
I have named you "Father North", (for myself and only), 'cause that's what you look like. Like a figure of a wise man (which you are), giving us goods from the past and not only, in your channel.
You've been a part of my life, every night here, for a year now, watching you and enjoying what i see.
Thank you for everything and may you be well and prosperous!!!

Kind of sounds like these fellas were a bit under-rated, but these songs I hear, they were a very polished pop - rock group. They were and are very very talented. Wow! The only song I ever heard was their hit " I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and I still hum along with that song when I hear it. It brings back very good memories of my first marriage. Yes, it's true. There were some great times in those short 2 and a half years and this was one of the songs that was there. Never heard much else until tonight. They were Very Very Good. I bet they were Great in concert too. Thanks for the extra music I missed back then Leland. You are a good teacher and a unselfish one. That makes for me easier learning. Thanks again Leland. Take care my Friend. Ol' Doug

Dan belonged to the Baha’i faith and I think it came though in some of the songs he wrote and the others he chose to record. He played a right handed guitar upside down as a lefty. Great great musician.

    "One Friend" (Dan Seals, 1984):
"I always thought you were the best
    I guess I always will
I always thought that we were blessed
And I feel that way still
Sometimes we took the hard road
But we always saw it through
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you
Sometimes the world was on our side
    Sometimes it wasn't fair
Sometimes it gave a helping hand
    Sometimes we didn't care
    'Cause when we were together
It made the dream come true
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you
    Someone who understands me
    And knows me inside out
    Helps keep me together
    And believes without a doubt
That I could move a mountain
    Someone to tell it to
If I had only one friend left
I'd want it to be you"
    -Rest in Peace Dan

I had almost all these on 45s. I think I have the Dan Seals Won't Be Blue Anymore cassette with that Meet Me In Montana duet with Marie Osmond. Also sang the Seals and Crofts We May Never Pass This Way Again at graduation in 1981. I only got to hear it twice the night before, and had to memorize it quickly. Other people were supposed to sing it with me, and the marching band was playing it with a couple of other guys playing guitar along with them. I was surprised it was the song that got the most votes out of five. I have no idea who made list of five for everybody to vote on. Ironically I had not heard that one before. This wasn't the first time I had to learn a whole script over night. I somehow got knocked out with a mortar board minutes before having to go over and sing this. It was all very weird feeling like I just woke up and I really thought I was having a dream because the sun was glittering off this guy's face and he was so cute and smiling and he said, "Do you know who I am?" That's when I asked him if this was a dream. Then I realized he was holding me up like Gone With The Wind or something. I said, "How are you doing this? ...Are you real?" I just kept looking at him, wondering what was going on and I finally recognized him! Kenny Vargas! He caught me! He eventually explained he saw a mortar board hit me and he was right behind me. Good thing he took state in in wrestling and I think maybe won one of the top three places at nationals. Of course that's how he was able to catch me and hold me that long. I had no time to think before I was ushered across the field to try and remember that song as fast as I could. Some persnickety woman would not let me even look at her mimeographed page with the words on it, The other people supposed to be standing there with me also singing it, all chickened out. I was begging them to help, but they didn't. I'm sure I repeated parts of the first verse in the second and third verses and probably transposed some stuff. Some of the band started trying to help a little. They really rocked the abrupt change in the style of the song, which brought that part back to me. People were trying to tell the woman I was just unconscious for awhile but she was not having it. So I just had to improvise part of it. I knew there was some place it didn't rhyme later in the verses but had to guess something quick. The people in the stands were nice and the class surprisingly was too. I think they weren't very familiar with it themselves. Thankfully I was not too far from the exit gate to do that slow leaving the field procession because my right temple felt like it was going to burst. I didn't really start feeling it till about halfway through the song. My dad did not notice any of this. Several strangers told me they saw it all as I went through the exit gate. My head hurt a lot, but I didn't want to miss the last get together with all my friends from band and the jazz group and theater. We were all going to one person's house. I didn't think this whole story would spill out of my brain here. I just think of it now every time I hear any of these guys. I start humming the song and trying to piece it together. Then going to figure out what the words actually are all the way through. I've noticed that sometimes Janet Jackson gets credited with this as well, and sometimes not, and I keep trying to figure that out. Summer Breeze had been my favorite.

"Broken Hearted Me" is a song written by Randy Goodrum, originally recorded by England Dan & John Ford Coley earlier that year, for their album Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive, and later covered by Canadian country and pop music singer Anne Murray. For anyone interested, England Dan & John Ford Coley made an appearance during the airing of Soundstage (taped in Chicago for PBS/WTTW) in 1974 which featured Seals & Crofts. Dan and John are introduced by Jim Seals around the 29:00 minute mark of the video. The whole video is about 57 minutes long and most entertaining. Bass sounds good.
And as we know, Ralph Humphries worked with Frank Zappa in the early ‘70s.

Just discovered this. I saw JFC last night here in Sedona AZ. Great stuff. I have been a fan ever since hearing, "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight", written by Parker McGee. I was also a huge fan of the Association. On this LP, there is a song called, "Another Golden Oldie Night for Wendy". That sure sounded like it could be a hit for the Association & I sent a cassette of the song over to their manager, who called me to say it would be confusing because of "Windy". Can't say I agree with that.

Lee, is it possible that I saw you playing with Seals & Crofts on TV back in the 70s? I think I remember...

Lee, thanks for the video, as always. I have a comment and a request. My comment: it was interesting for me to hear that England Dan and John Ford Coley recorded Broken Hearted Me. I was only familiar with the Anne Murray recording of it (which is fantastic). My request: you frequently mention who produced the various albums. In one of your videos sometime soon, could you explain what a producer does? I'm familiar with music, but not with the recording industry. It would be interesting to know. Thanks for all the great vids and music.

I knew this as a hit by Anne Murray. Did these guys do it first? I know without looking it up that she wouldn't have written it, but not sure they didn't.

It is so interesting that you mention Gene Page counting off songs with a stopwatch in the studio. I was at a session with the great HB Barnum, and he used the stopwatch also. I asked him about it, and he told me something about a hit song's tempo should be some multiple or fraction of the human heartbeat!! The stopwatch must've been a Motown thing!!

What a terrific duo. I read where John Leland played base on a couple other tracks on the album. Leland and Leland on base in the same LP?!? Thank you for sharing them via video #755!

Rafe van Hoy wrote what's forever for. (recorded it himself on his Prisoner of the Sky album)
Leslie and Kelly that you mentioned as background vocals went on to put out an amazing album with John Ford Coley after the duo split up.
Both albums well worth the listen if you like Leland's resume.
