  • Tactics, Heron Characteristics and Defensive strategies you need to hear. Defend your fish, your property and share your information. The Heron is no joke, its the Terminator and Smaug rolled into one and it wants your fish.

I have an armoury of bits. Line around the perimeter of pond, a strobe on PIR (that also emits high frequency sound) and reflective bits for day time. The best seems to be a hoody left out on a swing ball pole 😂

By now I have resorted to installing a mine field, and hired a part time sniper.

Haha thanks! After battling one for years, it fits. So would Smaug I think but that Terminator bit is better

I have used many of the Foscam cameras like the one you have. Some models have input/output connections that can be operated on the record trigger. If you get one of those and tie it into your fan circuit you can make the drapes action automated so you don't have to monitor/respond to anything.

I'm surprised how many people who are fighting pond predators don't just get, or recommend DOGS. I've had a nice, full koi pond for over 25 years now and have only had a visit once, and never lost a koi. I've also always had at least 2 K9s roaming the yard. Simple solution. I'm only reviewing other options now out of curiosity, but I'm still perplexed why so many pond owners don't simply have dogs.

They'd fly over it and dive bomb the pond. I watched one do that, over a metal barrier up and over right to the middle without protection; like a duck

Hi great video. I had problems this January 2019. I took down my fishing line around my pond. I put it up like a spider web to keep the Herons out. It worked but in November I took it all down for the winter thinking the Heron's went south for the winter but I was wrong. He came and took some of my fish. I put all the fishing line back up. He came back 3 times in one day but the fishing line kept him out so far. It is really a headache dealing with these birds. I was thinking is there any hi pitch nose devices that they sell that would work?

Sorry to hear its back. Mine was here all winter, from late fall to early spring and nothing would keep it out. The string helped and I tried metal wire too it just looks awful. If yours is getting tripped up on the line then I'd get it back up. Could be yours is going to be around through the winter? I don't think any noise device will keep it out, not for long. I heard about a type of smell that deters them but I can't find it online anymore. Was too expensive anyway and I think was only used at fish farms. The fish farms use shotgun blasts, things like that, and netting. My heron has not been back for over a year now. One thing I think that helped me keep new herons out I think may be that I let the lilly pads and floating plants cover the entire surface, so there was little to no reflection from cruising herons or egrets

@@beyondthetrail9077 Thanks for getting back. We will see what happens. I have security cameras around my pond. PTZ and can pan and zoom in. The fishing line really did the track over the summer. I do not like the look but I am not sure what else is left. My pond is 24 feet x 10 the deepest part is 3 feet and the lowest part is 1 foot, I might make a fish tunnel and put it in the deep part and also make the rocks higher around the edge which means spending more more money just to keep these pains out. Well thanks a lot for posting your video. Good luck.

Hi again. I put pond netting up also electric fence and fish line. I had a Yellow Crowned Night Heron come today. Another problem. I chased it but came back 3 times. It grabbed one small goldfish. I had to put the net on that part of the pond also hopefully it will stop the bird.

Wow. I haven't had a Heron now in two years? I'm lucky but it won't last. Since that night heron got a fish he'll keep coming back I imagine. Do you have a decoy? My brother has a bunch of Purple Martin houses and he suggested i use that since Martin colonies won't tolerate birds like that however Martin's will leave for half the year so I doubt I'll go that route

@@beyondthetrail9077 No I tried decoys years ago. It worked for a short time the Heron got smart to it. The net and electric fence kept racoons out and Herons out so far but I was not using the net on the far end of my pond and that is when the now new bird which I had not dealt with yet is the Yellow Crowned Night Heron. He dived into the pond from above which I was shocked and got one of my small fish. After that I netted the whole pond. I also have fishing line. One night before I had any electric fences and net I slept outside by the pond for 3 nights with a bat in my hand I was so mad/ Ha./
