  • Explanation of how I place netting over my pond during the fall and Winter months, to keep the leaves out. Easy and Inexpensive. The key to this being Successful is making sure that the frame is pulled tight and then the netting is pull tight as well. Disallows believe to just roll off in for snow and rain to go through.

I went to Menards and bought four sections of half inch schedule 40 10 foot PVC, a 15 by 20 netting kit from Alpine reach, a 6 pack of 1" open S hooks, and fifty feet of black cord. I used the larger metal tent stakes instead of rebar. The initial setup took a little over an hour and a half. I wish I could post a picture, it worked out perfectly. I owe you a beer! Thank you!

That was fantastic! Thank you so much. For years our netting collapses into the pond from leaves, snow, etc. You made the tenting look so do-able. Fingers crossed I am just as successful.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm in England and I cover mine with polycarbonate to keep heat in - in winter, and stop animals falling in, but in summer I don't get to see the fish much. This is awesome, you explained everything so clearly, even how you access the pond. Love it, thanks. I will definitely try this.

You have the right idea. A raised net is the best defense against predators as well as keeping leaves out. I leave mine up all year round. The only thing I did which I think is much better is to use 1/4 diameter rods that were 20 feet long. I made couplers where needed. I painted everything black and with the black netting it really doesn’t detract all that much. Steel may not be that available to everyone so the PVC is a good substitute. I do think if it were painted black it would look better though. Great video though young man 🤙🏻

  • @rand49er

Looks like it works well. My pond is about 11'x15' (kidney bean shaped). I've tried the PVC tubing, and it just doesn't seem to work well. It's just not strong enough. I construct a wood frame out of 2x4s and pull my net up over it. The PVC tubing method looks to be so much easier. On a side note, we just love having a pond. There's always something going on to make it interesting. Your koi are beautiful! Thanks for your video.

Excellent idea! Thanks for showing how you did it. We put your system up over our pond at the end of the summer and have spared ourselves a lot of trouble cleaning. We even left space on one side for songbirds to go in and out and the leaves have still stayed out. We don't have a problem with predatory birds. Especially impressed with how tying the rope from conduit to conduit keeps the whole thing all standing up firmly.

I can't thank you enough for making this available! We have a very small pond, but we've been working (unsuccessfully) for years to come up with a good cover. Your idea was brilliant and worked for us perfectly. It was not only really easy to put up, but it's actual quite attractive. It doesn't detract from the beauty of the pond at all. We left one end open to let the birds in, and so far no problem from the raccoons eating the fish (fingers crossed). The only issue we had was the #4 rebar wouldn't always fit in the tubing, so I had to grind off some bumps and twists.

They're like, Dad! You've come close now feed us!
That is an awesome job and it looks nice too! I don't have a leaf problem, I just inadvertently invited cormorants to my minnow pond when I added koi and goldfish 2 months ago! My pond is "natural" pond that is 10 ×20 ft and 3 feet deep with cattails and waterlilies. So I am going to use your idea but have taller side pieces and add the elbows to dome across above my cattails and drape the netting over.
You are a very clever fellow for thinking that contraption up! Do your koi go back and forth between the two ponds? Your fish are beautiful! All my favorites in there too! Thanks for sharing your great idea, even if it is for a different purpose. :D

Is this net not a total disaster for wildlife? I am supporting a wildlife rescue group and it’s amazing how many tangled animals they find. Some of them actually don’t make it because of “constriction wounds” - they get so tangled fighting to escape that they sometimes strangle themselves. Just asking, of course the net is fine if you have no wildlife around.

looks great. Let me know if it works out. I have tried lots of different techniques . None of them last. My current works pretty dam well. I chose deer netting. 4ft x 50ft. used green garden posts netting goes 4ft high all the way around the outside. Nowhere to land inside the pond so we are good there. Now if a bird or animal wants to get close I got another surprise. I used an electric fence running 750v. No worries you will hear them scream lmfao
