Too date the best I have seen. I specifically require one to tackle the problem of the enormous amount of plastic bottles on hundreds if not thousands of Construction sites here in Melbourne Australia. As I have many clients my job is setting up my team to clean up Construction waste. So rather than a machine in a fixed environment I require the machine to be portable and operating off the tray of my truck (s). I am hopeful you will build and sell this machines and inclusive do mobile machines.

I'm trying to learn metal working on lathes and mills at TH-cam University, and noticed at 11:50-11:51 that as your last step you went forward with the tool, and then once you hit the center region of the cylinder moved it right to shave a bit off the center cylinder in one pass.. is this a common final step to do once you shaved it down to where you want it, to then continue to shave one last time on the center part as a way to make it all continuous and smooth at the crease? So basically dont shave down the center part to the exact measurement and save a little meat for when you finish shaving the outer ring that you will shave off that little extra meat on that last pass? Hopefully my question isnt too noob and you understand what Im asking. I still havent learned much of the terminology used for the parts and methods.
I had to re-watch the video to work out what was going on, but yes, this was a finishing pass, a final light cut taken usually at higher rpm to produce a good finish at the required dimension.

True, but if you're into making things and have even a small shed or garage I'd really recommend getting some basic machine tools and learning how to use them, it really opens up many possibilities and you can start small and cheap.

I think you've missed the point a little, this was to demonstrate the auto-reverse function. Yes I could use a bigger motor, but then I'd also need a bigger gear box, couplers, shafts, gears and everything else to avoid breaking something. This machine was designed to be small, light and efficient.

My reply wasn't based on your motives of just doing your video as a demonstration.... my reply was just a general observance of seeing that it jammed sometimes and therefore would need a bigger motor or whatever else to overcome the jam. If you click "read more" under my initial comment, you would see that I followed it with saying "but eh it probably doesn't jam enough to warrant spending the extra money for higher power motor" and this would obviously include spending more time/work and replacing more parts just to overcome a jam that happens now and then
Hi! Sorry didn't mean to sound critical, yes I did see all of your message. My approach was to have the machine solve the jamming problem intelligently rather than just beef everything up adding cost and weight and running at a much higher power than is needed for 99% of the time.

you could buy a used woodchopper, there are 2 types. The fast and loud ones with spinning blades (good for thin material) and the slow and more quieter ones which you need for more solid plastic (no foils) its the best option i found
@@AndysMachines Yes, I can see what I think to be either an Anderson or perhaps a Lovejoy high torque shaft coupler on the left at 3:40 but in the shot at 0:09 the drive motor axis seems to be at 90 degrees to the shredder axis and I was wondering how you transferred the torque through that 90 degrees. But perhaps the shredder and drive axis are in line.

Yes, it looks a little different to a normal gearmotor as this gearbox was originally for a different motor and the square box between the motor and gearbox is an adaptor I had to build to connect the two together. The reduction ratio is around 60:1
No, sorry. It's not for sale, I just built it for my own use. It's a 230v single phase motor but it's standard frame size so could be changed for a different type.

You would probably have to re-shred it multiple times and sieve it to get powder. I think you'd be better of with something like a high speed granulator.

Yes, I'm sure it will shred wood, but I'm not going to try it because I don't want it full of sawdust and splinters! (It would probably contaminate the clean plastic I usually shred). Great video, and props on the machining skills to make all the parts into a fine product at the end. The only thing that I would like to see is a plunger used instead of a priceless hand when pushing difficult pieces through the shredder blades. You can always make another plunger . . .
It does have a safety interlock which means it will only run with the lid closed, but I included a key-locked override for my own use (this was useful for filming with the lid open).

Well I don't know about 'full' machine shop, it's a home hobby shop in a garage and much smaller and less well equipped than many you see on youtube (eg. about 10x smaller than Abom's)
Safety system: you can isolate (electrically) cone from other device and add measure resistance circuit between cone and other parts of shredder. Plastic is not conductive. If conduction between the cone and the shredder is detected (human's hand 🙄), the motor will be turned off. I wish you success.
I've seen this done on table saws but it's really not necessary with the interlocked lid (I show this overridden for clarity) and it would be hard to electrically isolate the cutters from the frame of the machine.

(1,000 KG). IF any molding company would buy it. Plastic MUST be clean and contamination free - most molders would not TRUST an independent working from a garage.

AndysMachines what effect do you think the size of the teeth have on power consumption? Would it be beneficial to have a coarser shred first then a finer shred between two machines to reduce overall power or would the difference be insufficient?
I don't think it would affect the overall power consumption too much but definitely shredding twice would be less efficient as it takes quite of a lot of power just to turn the machine even when empty.

You have to sign up to Patreon to view the files, yes there is a .dxf of the shredder cutters which can be used for laser cutting, these are the only parts that can really be laser cut. There are engineering blueprints of all the other parts of the shredding mechanism and there is also a calculator for choosing the correct motor and gear reduction, it's not so much about the power of the motor, but the torque produced by the motor/gearbox combo. I don't cover the electrics, this will vary depending on motor used and really if you plan to build something like this you need to be confident with wiring to do it safely. Yes, this shredder will easily handle bottle caps. I've shred plastic up to 3-4mm thick but the thicker it is the slower you need to feed it in to avoid jams, so really thick plastic will need cutting into strips and feeding in one at a time.

May I ask how you coupled the drive motor to the shredder gears?
With a 'jaw coupling' You can see it on the left of the screen at 3:40 it drives one of the shafts on the other side of the machine to the gears.

There is a worm gearbox between the motor and the shredder axle, this turns the output through 90°, you can see it on the left at 00:53

It's about 25 rpm, but anything below 60 rpm works fine. Too fast and the teeth tend to knock things out of the way instead of grabbing them.

I agree with using something other than a hand to push down on parts! Definitely a very useful machine. But gotta have some safety measure in place!

What’s the power consumption look like on this machine?
It's around 300-400W running at full load
AndysMachines what effect do you think the size of the teeth have on power consumption? Would it be beneficial to have a coarser shred first then a finer shred between two machines to reduce overall power or would the difference be insufficient?
I don't think it would affect the overall power consumption too much but definitely shredding twice would be less efficient as it takes quite of a lot of power just to turn the machine even when empty.
How is this machine's productivity rated?
It can do up to 300 milk jugs an hour (12 seconds each one) which is approx 10 Kg/hour

You have to sign up to Patreon to view the files, yes there is a .dxf of the shredder cutters which can be used for laser cutting, these are the only parts that can really be laser cut. There are engineering blueprints of all the other parts of the shredding mechanism and there is also a calculator for choosing the correct motor and gear reduction, it's not so much about the power of the motor, but the torque produced by the motor/gearbox combo. I don't cover the electrics, this will vary depending on motor used and really if you plan to build something like this you need to be confident with wiring to do it safely.
Yes, this shredder will easily handle bottle caps. I've shred plastic up to 3-4mm thick but the thicker it is the slower you need to feed it in to avoid jams, so really thick plastic will need cutting into strips and feeding in one at a time.
Is this possible with Aluminium ?

Thin aluminium certainly, check out my other video on shredding cans. I haven't tried thicker aluminium but I think it would handle 2-3mm

It's an optical switch/beam break sensor. You can find them in old printers.
