Mini DIY shredders are now a reality with our latest SHREDII design. This homemade shredder was tested against wood, plastic, aluminum, steel, and even the indestructible Nokia 3310. This shredder is a great addition to our DIY machine shop, and we use it primarily for recycling 3D prints by taking the granules that come out of the DIY shredder and using them with INJEKTO, our DIY injection molding machine, to create new plastic injected parts.
This SHREDII is designed for use with Nema 34 motors, and in this video we also tested it with more powerful servo motors that we had left over from our DIY CNC and DIY wire EDM machine videos.
We hope this DIY shredder will enable those with minor shredding requirements to continue moving forward with their recycling projects.

My man single-handedly bringing the modern industrial revolution onto the desktop
Hahaha, thanks for your support 😃, glad you appreciate what we do 😊
Thank you
@@ActionBOX can u show me how to make this? Need it to shred IC chips
Hardly single handedly. He is standing on the shoulders of many many giants. As well as walking on their backs by failing to acknowledge the designs he is claiming as his own.
@jerbear7952 lol you think anyone in shredding, winding, extrusion, press are ever going to mention the inventors? If they were songs they would be labeled "traditional".
Very refreshing to see someone actually use proper safety measures.
Love watching the evolution of shredii! I might have missed it, what grade steel are the new blades?
Dang you’ve just about hit that golden YT milestone - congrats
Thanks Makers Muse, we appreciate your support 😃. We are using Chromoly steel blades which are much tougher. These new blades are also much smaller so there is more torque applied onto the plastic from the drive shaft. Let me know if you’d like to collaborate 😉 - Dave
Look awesome so far! During the metal screw test, and the phone test, you can see the blades moving and impinging on each other a bit. Looks like it would be beneficial to work out a way to compress the blade stack! Maybe a shaft collar at either end to lock the blade stack in place, and then set-screws going through the shaft collar to press inwards against the blade stack to provide compression?
Thanks for your support 😃. I like your suggestion and will definitely look into designing that. Ps. I checked out your channel and it looks awesome 😎. I can see why shredder blades would interest you 😜. Cheers, Dave
@@ActionBOX thanks Dave! I've been really enjoying your channel as well mate!
man, this and the desktop injection molder are absolute game changers
Thanks 😃. I’m glad to hear other people think so too 😊. They have been super valuable to me. Cheers, Dave
Agreed!

I don't know if this is just me, but I'd seriously want an emergency stop button that kills the power, rather than telling the Arduino to stop.
Just because if the Arduino or motor drivers go haywire, or don't respond, the button won't do anything. Most likely not going to happen, but I'd really want something that cannot fail.
Hi Max, I must say, this is a great idea that is extremely important to implement. In my case I always had someone with me to hit the power switch not shown in the video in case of a disaster, but indeed I agree with you 100% that safety here is imperative. Thanks for leaving your awesome comment, and I hope you enjoyed the video regardless 😃. Cheers, Dave
@@ActionBOX No worries. Cheers for reading/replying, and most importantly, making a really awesome video/product. Best of luck to you lot.
@@1992jamo thanks again Max 😊

Needs a panic switch on the mains, ideally a magnetic one so it wont come on after a power failure.
I love what you doing with recycling! Great job.
Thanks a lot for your support Roland 😃
I like how you're iterating on designs. Very interesting to see the process.
Thank you very much! I appreciate your support 😃
this guy is a complete fraud, benjamin.
Hey I am a steam student I love your ideas on home made CNC machines I have used the old shredder for an school project before thanks for the vids
No problem, thanks for watching 😃
Totally love this design!
Thanks 😃. Check out the newer shredii 5.0 video.
Been thinking of making shredder for aluminum and glad ran into this video on my feed !
Haha, awesome, glad our efforts could help someone out 😃
You guys are amazing! I wish I had half the know-how you both have. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you 😊, we really appreciate hearing that 😃
Amazing work my man!!!!! I would love to be able to have something like this. For years Ive been seeing lots of 3d printed parts go into the trash when the same companies that make the printers should be working on helping us reuse the bad prints. Instead they focus on selling their own filaments.
Thanks Juan 😃. We hope this shredder will help people with small scale needs for light shredding. You can get one at actionbox.ca if you need one. Cheers, Dave
Awesome thanks for the hard work, dedication, and demonstration.
Thank you for your support 😃
Just found your channel. I love your structured and organized approach and your energy. Subscribed!
Thanks! Welcome aboard. We’ve got lots of exciting content in the works. More coming very soon 🙌
Great video, amazing to see you keep improving designs.
Thank you very much!
I'm interested in shredding #2 HDPE plastic (milk jugs, empty medication bottles, etc) for recycling. Is this able to help with this, and what can I do with the shredded bits to make a new product? Thanks!
Awesome!!! Thanks 😁😁
Thanks for watching 😊
Shredpods 😂 🎧 this is genius! I want to get this and your injection box v2.0 into our lab! Cool demo project for recycled plastics to new parts. 🤙🏼😎
Haha, thanks for your support 😂. Feel free to reach out to us via TH-cam and I can offer you a custom discount code.
I love the idea of a bicycle drive, it's an elegant low tech approach
Thanks 😊, we also thought it was interesting smile. Thanks for your support 😃
Very cool! Just found your channel and subscribed. I’m planning a recycle/re-use project for our offgrid homestead, my goal is to process 100% of our recyclable materials ourselves. I’ll be documenting this project on our channel. Your shredder design looks great, I would make it a hand crank of some sort.
What would it take to beef up shreddie to handle glass and tin cans?
That’s awesome 😃, I’m glad that shredii is sparking ideas for you. I checked out your channel and it looks very interesting. Let me know if we can help in any way. To answer your question, I would need to know exactly what you are trying to shred (thickness, dimensions etc.) and I can test it out here at our shop. Cheers, Dave
I love your shreddy! So cool.
Thank you 😊 I appreciate that
Great stuff! I would love to get some of your machines for my high school students to experiment with this year.
The indestructible Nokia was destroyed because IT WANTED TO! It thought *“Enough is enough, it's time to move on!”*
😂
I consider that a Nokia victory... it broke the shredder before getting fully mauled so it's victorious yet again... literal steel nails get rekd and the nokia is just like... meh... put the battery back in and let's see a do-over... I bet the Nokia will make it out with a couple of scratches. That thing is without a doubt absolutely indestructible. I dont see why we need all of these fancy shmansy fighter jets when we have Nokia that can do both electronic warfare AND bunker/tank-busting percision KOs at a high enough velocity, fired out of standard artilery of course... but noooo we need 32 trillion dollars of debt instead. Mount that bitch on a Walmart drone and I bet it could down the F-35. In fact, I am challenging the Russian bots/intelligence officer reading this comment to try it and then give me a reward later when I win them the Ukraine war with this comment. Nuff said.
this is genius very good job 👏🏾
Thank you 😊
Whats that white thing on your cr30 3d printer.
Only ask as I have a cr30 as well
Cool stuff shredders are the ultimate ASMR
Thanks! They are oddly satisfying 😅
Thats amazing I wish I could actually retain all the info on the internet.. I hate wanting to do something from an industral application... And not knowing how. Thank you.... Great job on the video 😉
Making a mini shredder was on my list thank you soooooo very much.
No worries, check out actionbox.ca
Man i really need to get me a shredder. Since i learned you cant actually easily recycle prints I have been saving all my scraps.
Feel free to check it out at this link actionbox.ca/products/shredii-4-0 Cheers,
Dave
Fell absolutely in love with your content. Btw now we know what made those phones indestructible: the battery. 😂
Thanks, I appreciate hearing that 😊. I would say the phone still beat shredii despite not having its battery 😜. Cheers
Cool I've been subscribed for a while! I could sure make use of shreddy!
Great build, subscribed!
Thanks! 🙌
Really impressing!
Thank you 😊
Man I want one of these! Nice build.
Thanks a lot 😊. They are definitely great machines 😃
@@ActionBOX copper shredding next?!
@@wantafastz28 no I probably won’t have time for that. What would you use it for?
@@ActionBOX shredder of copper lol. 4/0 wire specifically. But I know that is a huge task. The industrial ones are completely out of reach financially.
That’s a sturdy machine. I’ve seen wood chippers that were less sturdy-built
Thank you my friend.
This is awesome!!!!! I want one for shredding my failed 3d printes to reuse filament
Love it, glad you found this video useful 😊
Thanks guys, This video will be most helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing project
Thank you 😃
What could you use on the discharge to take the shredded material and turn it into powder , mix with another material or into an intrusion heater tip to produce your own custom 3d print material
I’m not sure 🤔.
Nokia never gave up until it's last breath. Inflicting damage at his last moment.
It put up a good fight 😂
@@ActionBOX definitely. Haha I think Nokia 3210 is one tougher contender for shreddy. Even tougher than 3310. Haha
Just what I was looking for 🙂
😃 sweet, I’m glad to hear
Love the covers!
Thanks 😃. Safety first
Wow, amazing video. Loving shredii and the content you are producing. Is it possible to code for a timed auto reverse when max torque / power draw is hit. That way it would protect the key and also react prior to further breakage. You would have to use a timer relay I think. I am sure Dave Hakkens did something like this. Keep up the amazing content. Mike
Thanks Mike! It’s definitely something to explore. Appreciate the suggestion 😄
Super cool project guys !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😃
Yoooooooo....Been looking for a good shredder to help promote to the Pultrusion scene. Top notch efforts! This thing is a Beautiful Beast!
Thanks a bunch, I appreciate your support 😃. Cheers, Dave
Amazing. I need this for a lab application to shred steel turnings. What type of steel are you using in your blade?
Hey! The blades are made of hardened steel. Contact us from our website if you have any other specific questions about the shredder.
you are talentful...really good designer and artisan...
Thanks Petrie 😊. I appreciate your support.
This was super cool to see after just watching the original Shredii vid. You may have covered this in another video but - is there a benefit to using the copper instead of a mounted pillow bearing? Also wondering if you have the cnc files available for this to build my own. Love this project!
Heck ya! At times I want to order Injecto x but then feel there will be an Injecto x+1
Good stuff guys
Hahaha, this was definitely our last shredii. It works really well, its super easy to assemble, and we are super happy with it. Injekto is also really robust and works great.
Absolut lovley nice Work man
Thank you my friend 😃
Nice iteration on the previous designs!
Thanks 😃
how do you make the hardened steel?
Will it also work with wet materials?
Ingenious 👍🏻👍👍🏽
Thank you 😃
This is way better than all the aluminium can crushers here on YT ;)
hahahaha, thanks, I appreciate this comment 😊
Can the motors detect resistance? If you added some code to the arduino to have them reverse just for a second or two if they get stuck, they might be able to self-dislodge some of those "clogs" like from the Nokia?
That’s a great idea. I thought of programming a sequence into the motors that reverses as well but I like this idea better. How would you go about detecting the resistance? The motors only have a current output value that would increase and decrease with resistance on the motors, but this would be true for any sort of load. Cheers
@@ActionBOX Honestly I'm not sure...if you can measure the current while the motor is running with a current sensor, experimenting with what that output looks like when the motor seizes to see if it's some kind of consistent/repeatable/triggerable value? It's not something I've done before, just a thought I had watching the video. Thank you for the awesome content!
@@ZacharySkaggs thank you, I love the suggestion and will give it a shot. Cheers, Dave
Do you mean the capacitive touch wasn't working? Did you not detect the touch or what were you using for sudden breaking. My first thought is something in the chain or knock the motor gear off perpendicular to the rotation. (As the dropping something in the chain could damage things and this just removes the rotation force faster than the motor can stop.)
Had not finished the video when I wrote that. Could be something that pulls the keys outward from the motor gears as well. Or like a spring on the inside of the key that can push it out all the way then a cap to keep it from doing that but the capacitive touch ditches the cap, yeeting the key, thus stopping the shredification.
Thanks for your input. To stop the shredder I can just stop sending signal to the motors and the blades will stop spinning instantly. The issue isn’t the mechanical, but rather getting the electronics to work flawlessly. Does that make sense? Cheers
@@ActionBOX I think I am following. Due to the size I don't think the built in capacitance of the arduino will work. Maybe a TTP223 or MTCH112 would work. What is the total mass of the connected metal of each of the shredding sides?
Freaken Amazing
Thank you my friend 😊
cool upgrade~
Thanks 😃
I love shredii vids
Thanks 😊
Where do you purchase the blades for a project like this?
Actionbox.ca
Nice clean video.
Thanks! Glad you liked it 😄
Love your videos man
Thank you my friend 😃
Need one to crush rock for Gold Prospecting. Got one one, or will this work? Thanks! Great Ideas
!!
Considered using the furnace to temper the blades?
Good idea, however the blades have not shown any sign of weakness yet. They have not dented nor deformed in any way. Thanks for the awesome suggestion though 😃
@@ActionBOX you mentioned you used harder steel, was wondering if you cut them from softer and tempered those?
Really good CGI of the Nokia being shreded!
😂😂
Did you notice a few of the nokia shreds were on fire! too cool!
Good eye!
Crasy Work!
Thanks 😊
man this nokia intro was the best !😂
Hahaha thanks 😂
Why is the dual shaft not available?
So the Nokia can be destroyed, but even under destruction it may still cause damage. Definitely an exemplary warrior.
Hahaha yup 😝
Very nice!
Thank you 😃, I appreciate your support.
기계기술이. 대단하십니다
It’ll be really cool to have a awesome shredder that I can use to shred so many things in my bedroom
Definitely! What do you have to shred?
I have so much paper stuff, something like this would be a fantastic middle-machine for my burn barrel process.
hahaha, glad to hear. Feel free to check it out at actionbox.ca
Love your channel, and got a new sub.
Thanks, welcome aboard 😃
I am looking for shredder for dirty paper plates.
Machine should start automatically when paper plate is placed in slot as it is to be installed in our temple kichen where people can just put dirty plate after use.
Machine should be washable without dismantling.
Any ideas?
awesome!
I love building things from bikes. I could totally work with you on that idea.
Would be really nice with one of these. Have kilos of failed prints that I would like to shred and melt into new filament.
That would be awesome.
OMG I want one of these...
Watched from Washington DC
That’s awesome, thanks for watching 😃. They are available at actionbox.ca
Cheers,
Dave
hello
You do wonderful projects, I love this channel.
do you sell plans or the finished machines of yours projects?
I'm interested in this and the desktop plastic injection molding machine!
Thanks for your attention and regards!
Hi, thanks for your supportive comment .we sell the machines on our website actionbox.ca/products/shredii-4-0
why do you need stepper motors for this instead of cheaper DC motors?
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
I don't know how much this Shredder is but it would be a dream to have one because I believe it can change my life for good... You're a genius sir...
Thank you sir 😃. Check out the video of our latest shredii 5s
I need a shreddie I’ve been trying to build one for the past year unsuccessfully that’s when I started to recycle everything Is there a way to purchase one?
Hi, you can purchase one at actionbox.ca
I need one of these for cardboard. A big one. I love the design. This would be perfect. Just needs to be wider so less folding and cutting would be needed to grind up cardboard. Are there plans for building these?
Glad you like the design! We currently don't provide plans but there are kits available on our website: actionbox.ca/products/shredii-4-0 😃
I’d love to try and shred everything 😂
Haha there is something so satisfying about shredding things 😂
Awesome. How can I get the design to produce my own shredii ?
Check out actionbox.ca
I could put that to great use. I've been saving plastic caps and other plastics for years.
It shreds caps very easily that’s for sure.
A shredder like that would be a life saver for me.
We sell shredder kits. Check out actionbox.ca! Message us for a special discount ;)
There was so much stress on the construction when you put the Nokia in, wow :D
Indeed hahaha, that phone really is tougher than one would assume 😂. Thanks again for watching, I always appreciate seeing your comments smile. I still think we should collaborate on a project 😉
Why did you use bushings and not bearings?
Me encanta!!! Me parecería más ingenioso, que los piñones se transmitieran el movimiento entre sí, con un solo motor
Ayyy please one shreddy, lol I am a total dummy, and I am learning how to use freecad, I just made a phonestand, took me two tries to get it right, wishing I could recycle the pla used up 😅 loved the vid,
Thank you for watching 😃. The two shredii machines that we are giving away will be offered to two random subscribers who will be listed on our community page on Feb 19. Cheers, Dave
You can put a grate with .250 holes evenly spaced below the blades. This will make the shread size smaller or larger determined y the size of the holes. But, that would probably work better if the speed was much faster.
The grinders we used in plastic had the grates in placed so that we could get consistent sized regrind to be recycled back into our extrusion process. The grates were curved to the diameter of the blades and they had a small gap. So you get a slice effect as the plastic went through the holes.
Sweet, thanks for the insight.
If the can tube was taller so you could stack multiple cans?
Yes that would work! They would just automatically feed into the shredder.
So, why was the wire edm decommissioned?
Because we are working on the V2 of the wire edm and it’s a total redesign 😜. Hopefully we will get that video out soon enough. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ActionBOX looking forward to see that video.
I would love to get a shredder. I want to investigate them in terms of a method of reducing the volume of generic trash (too much air). Probably add a large hopper with a lid on top, and a compacting extruder below.
Thats a cool idea. You can get s shredder at actionbox.ca
Wow i really love and need it.
Thanks 😊
