    Arriving at Amsterdam CS is done so skillfully - as you slow the train so gently over what seems a long time before full stop. Really artful and great.

    Beautiful sky. Early sunlight on the underside of the clouds. Peaceful before the morning truly gets underway. And of course the train driver is up and at 'em. I don't wake up bright and breezy but I do well so long as I keep my mouth shut and just watch. Great video Mr Stefan..

      That is in use when it freezes in Holland. It sprays on the bottom of the train so snow won't stick to it and fall of to block junctions and stuff.

    Really interesting that the HSL is all concrete slab track. Really high standard infra there. Any idea why they chose this as it’s been specced here in the UK for HS2 because of high line speeds?

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dutch soil is very soft because we're about 6 meters under sea-level. The maximum speed on the conventional tracks is 140km/h. If we'd go faster train would have a change to detail on most of our tracks. This is why the high speed line is build in concrete this a foundation. The HSL is build for speeds up to 600km/h (for future purposes). Our international trains (Eurostar and Thalys) run max 300km/h now.

    • @iman2341
      @iman2341 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Machinist Stefan Very interesting, that’s an incredible maximum speed but I’d guess that’s more to do with track curvature. (or lack of it ;) ). Did it make the line particularly expensive to build?

    • @MachinistStefan

      Thanks, so the NL version of roadrunner.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A phase lock is meant for separation two phases from each other. This to make sure there are not too many trains running under one phase and taking too much power from the lines.
      All the beeps you hear are meant for the driver. It's giving the driver heads up about new commands, signals ahead or signals passed and all that kind of stuff. Its not for letting the driver know the train has passed a specific part of the track. That's another sound and must be activated by the driver at the start of the point the trains need to be passed by before the sound.

    I always read "Muiderpoort" as "Murder Park" and think "I'm never going there, thanks". ;-D
    Would love to have seen inside the cab of the loco. I've been watching your colleague's channel (Train Driver's POV Dutch Railways) for years, and he used to give great footage of the controls until officialdom caught up with him and he had to change it slightly.
    Have seen the intercity loco powered trains in vids of his, including one where his ICM is pulling from Schiphol with one of them on the parallel track, but he never drives any of them.
    Is the sound recording level low, or do those locos have really good sound insulation? Seems remarkably quiet at speed. As an aside, the one you drive seems to have a suspension noise that sounds like someone clearing their throat/blowing their nose all the time which is a tad distracting. The one you brought from the yard seemed very smooth and quiet indeed.
    Lastly, curious that you collect the first set from the yard only to sit at Amsterdam CS for an hour rather than the driver who's there simply collecting it themselves. Doesn't seem a very efficient use of your time if that was the first thing you did. Does it happen often? I'd get a bit annoyed if I started my day with something that takes 40 minutes in total (however long it takes to prepare the train to leave the yard then bring it to Ams CS) only to sit around for an hour after that.
    Thanks for the vids. Really like how you take the trouble to put extra info on screen. Love visiting the Netherlands.
    p.s. I once got to ride in the rear cab of an ICM between two stations when I was last there in 2018. That happened as a result of some remarkable circumstances, a great treat. I think the conductor was a little surprised at how much I knew about the ICM's controls, LOL.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for your long comment! :D
      Haha, Muiderpoort is just Muiderpoort. No murderers there. Safe to visit as soon as corona has left the planet. No worries!
      Do you have Instagram? There I post the cabins I drive very often in my stories. instagram.com/machiniststefan is my account. :) Think you might like the insides I give there!
      The TRAXX locomotives are very well designed and most of the time very quiet during the ride. The recording was just as all the other ones on my channel. The sound you hear comes from the suspension of the locomotives. They all have that. :) Depends on where you're driving how much sound they make.
      The shifts are all planned by our planning department. Getting the train ready also takes time and it's always nice to have a little bit of a break when you woke up extremely early in the morning. The driver getting on the train in Amsterdam started later. It's not inefficiënt. It's just the big picture you can't see from behind your computer. :D
      You're so welcome! Hope you will enjoy all the other video's as well and come to know our signal system a little bit more by watching.
      Have a good weekend :D

      @@MachinistStefan
      Hi, thanks for the lengthy reply.
      I figured the driver taking the train you delivered from the yard might well have started earlier, and I understand the point about "system efficiency" (I used to head a team that did scheduling for a large call centre for a bank, so I know about how matching shifts to demand can produce some "odd" results if viewed individually). I personally would rather drive, have a short break, drive, lunch, drive, end than spend an hour off after just getting going (I would think you'd not been on duty for more than an hour?), but that's just me. I suppose I could take my Kindle with me and get paid to read it, LOL.
      I'm pretty good on your signal system as I've been watching for a few years at least the other channel I mentioned and have asked many questions, including quite detailed ones about all sorts of aspects of your impressive network.
      The last 4 times I've been there, going back to 2016, I start by catching an 0735 service from Schiphol. One reason I really like the ICM, apart from the spectacular cabin position and view, is its 1st class cabin is terrific if you've got large luggage for 4+ weeks visiting from the other side of the world.
      Trust you're staying safe. Hope to visit again when this dreadful virus is dealt with/reduced to local outbreaks.
      Cheers

    The de-icing device, is it effective? We in Finland had a similar device for a while, but it proved not to be effective. Maybe it is to do with the temperatures and type of snow/ice buildup up here. Instead, we use hot water spraying and hot air blowers at the depot.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don't have many snow days in Holland. And when it snows it pretty extreme when there 20cm of snow on the ground. 😉😉 For those amounts of snow it works really well. It keeps the snow from sticking to the train and falling off of it blocking junctions.

NS ordered the Fyra some years ago that got to speeds up to 250km/h, but that train was build very badly and was returned to Italy. We are waiting for Alstom to deliver our new order: ICNG (IC next generation). This train will get to speeds of 200km/h which is enough for our small country. 😁😁

    • @MachinistStefan

      No, the shift to left track is in the dive-under Barendrecht, entering at 59.29. That dive-under crosses the high speed track on the left side and some tracks for freight trains (at the right hand side before entering the dive-under) as well.

    Hi Stefan, Great video. Having lived in the Netherlands for 6 years from 1988, it's a lovely trip down memory lane going along with you on some of you rides. Thanks.
    A couple of coments, I was a little dissapointed at the 160Kmh top speed on the High Speed Line, that seems quite 'slow' when compared to the intercity trains in the UK. On 'normal' track they are generally going at up to 240Kmh and certainly exceed 160Kmh on much of the system! On the High Speed Line I was expecting you to be going at atleast 200Kmh! Why the relatively slow top speed? I know the TGV/Thalys trains travel at 300Kmh on the same track, don't they?
    Secondly, why are so many of the 'secondary' power units not painted in the standard blue/yellow livery?
    Again thanks,
    Jonathan.

    • @riktijd4598
      @riktijd4598 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The NS ordered a while ago the Fyra v250 (they could go 250 km/h) but because of mallfunction they cancelled that whole train model. Now they are having a Traxx br 186 locomotive that has a limited speed of 160 km/h. In about 2 or 3 years the NS is getting a new train called the 'ICNG' this one can speed up to 200 km/h.
      The white blue yellow trains are the stoppingtrains in the netherlands, so they've got a different colour scheme.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Jonathan,
      I think most of your question is already answered by RikTijd (thanks). Another reason why trains in Holland don't get to drive faster than 140km/h on conventional tracks is because of our soft soil. Most of the Netherlands is located under sea-level (some parts even 6 meters). All land was dried up by the Dutch. In the past we tried running our trains at 160km/h on the upgrades tracks between Amsterdam and Utrecht, but that didn't work out well. Our trains start jumping up and down at that speed and that is not very comfortable. ;)
      Some of the TRAXX locomotives aren't yellow/blue because they are hired from Germany. :)

    • @MachinistStefan

      Nee, dat geluid is hetzelfde gebleven. Echter heeft het bij de Traxx nooit helemaal geklopt. Je hoort beide tonen direct zodra er wordt gesleuteld. Bij het terugdraaien van de sleutel klinkt geen geluid meer en moet de machinist dus goed let op het symbool dat de deuren gesloten zijn alvorens er tractie gegeven kan worden.

    Uiteraard weer een mooie video!
    Maar ik heb weer een vraagje :) Bij de TRAXX valt me op dat je een bepaald geluid in de cabine hebt dat je niet bij de overige treinen hoort. Is dat een soort vering/schokdemper ofzo of is dat als de loc wat overhelt? Je hoort het namelijk alleen tijdens het rijden en niet als je stil staat. Daarnaast viel me op dat je het ook veel erger/vaker hoort op het conventionele traject en vrijwel niet op het HSL-traject. Je ging “geruisloos” door de Groene hart tunnel.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dat heeft idd met vering te maken. Vooral op ons steeds hobbeligere conventionele spoor hoor je het heel erg. Het materieel krijgt het daar steeds zwaarder te verduren.

    quick questions for you, with a locomotive at each end of a set, are both taking power? do locomotives change pantographs from 25kv ac to 1500dc, and if so, is it automatic? and I think I've figured out phase locks, what we call in the U.K. overhead neutral sections ( OHNS), great video by the way, and a so much better railway system than the UK

    • @osasunaitor
      @osasunaitor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I'm a train driver in spain and I drive these locomotives (Bombardier Traxx) among others. There is usually a different pantograph for each current (one of them is connected to the AC transformer while the other one leads directly to the DC converters, also their physical features may be different). Each time you change from one current to another, you lower the pantograph during the transition zone and then hit the raise button at the end of it; in my case the locomotive raises both pantographs to "taste" the new current, and then it automatically decides which one should be kept and which one should be lowered (although you can also choose it manually through a different switch in case of failure). I don't know if this is the case in Dutch locomotives as well.
      You are right about phase locks, these are the neutral buffer zones that separate the sections with different phases in 3-phase AC powered lines.
      About the second locomotive at the end, I'm not sure because we don't use this system in my country...
      Hope I could help :)

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi guys! Thanks so much for the questions and also for the very complete answer! :D
      What osasunaitor says is mostly the same here in The Netherlands. Except the fact that we manually choose the right pantograph to go up. If we forget to choose he right one before raising the pantograph it will 'taste' that it's the wrong power and then lower it automatically. :)

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and yes, both locomotives take power and work with each other to make the train move. The locomotive at the back of the train gives a little less power than the one in the front to make sure it doesn't push the carriages out of the rails.

    Have you ever been to Squash City?
    I can quickly and easily see the position of an upcoming switch and know the route the train will take - very cool.
    Stefan, I am curious if you know "why"/"what", causes you to break out and whistle? Happy at that point for some reason, anxious, tired, want the drive to be over?
    What do you do/see or look for relative to the repetitive nature of various routes? I don't mean to suggest for a second that you get bored for any reason because I know you love your job and it shows........but as I take the drive with you, over and over I notice certain buildings or structures, and my eye always looks to them.........
    Why is the Maintenance Yard so far from any city - what kind of maintenance takes place out there? ( I forgot the city closest to it.)
    The De-Icer section of track. Does it perform the de-icing as the train just drives over it?
    Are many or any curves actually banked?
    The very long Willemsspoortunnel I see goes under a huge section of Rotterdam as well as under the main shipping canal called Braaseemeer and has a name Nieuwe Mass which doesn't really translate in Google. What is the name of that Canal? Mass translates to MESH and that doesn't seem correct?

      1. No never been there. Don't really like sports.
      2. Haha, don't know... I just whistle whenever I feel like it. :D Keeps me awake during the day.
      3. Well as a driver you mostly have your eyes on the route of course. But sometimes I also check out the surroundings. It's very nice seeing the seasons pass by throughout the year. :)
      4. Well, a maintenance yard for train takes a LOT of space. And the city is for houses, not for trains of course. That's the reason why the shunting yards are always a little time of driving. All sorts of maintenance can be done at those yards. Whatever the train needs...
      5. The anti-icing system only works when it's freezing or when it's going to freeze. All train get sprayed on with a spray that keeps blocks of ice from the train so they won't fall between junctions causing junction failure. :) When the anti-icing system is working the maximum speed for trains to pass it is 5km/h.
      6.Yes, depends on the speed of course. :)
      7. It doesn't translate... It's the Maas. In this case the New Maas. :)
      Same to you Paul. :D Enjoy the warm days over there! :D

    • @MachinistStefan

      You must know the Dutch language and have finished a Dutch school on level MBO3-4. Then you can follow an internal course at the railways (1 year). You can also take the lessons on a school where you can get your MBO3-4 diploma at the same time (2 years).

      You must be fluently Dutch. At least 16 years for the MBO-study and 18 years for the NS course itself.

      Correct! :) It used to be 140km/h at max. But for the HSL in The Netherlands an exception was made because the tracks are super smooth to drive on.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, max 160km/h for our TRAXX locomotives. In the past we ordered Fyra, but that train fell apart in it's first weeks on the tracks. They were send back to Italy. Now... about five years later they finally prepared to trains to drive again. In the meantime NS ordered other high speed trains from Alstom. They will travel at 200km/h. Which is enough for our small country. :D

      Uhm... who get's dumped in the middle of nowhere? You mean me? In the end of the video? That is a shunting track. :) At that point we walk to the other side of the train and then start a new drive to Amsterdam. Every day, in sun, rain, snow, storm everything... That's our job.
